Slow And Steady Wins The Race In Business

Most people know the story about the race between the turtle and rabbit. The rabbit is much faster than the turtle, but he gets a little too confident and careless, and ultimately loses to the much slower turtle. My takeaway from that story has always been, “slow and steady wins the race; don’t be the careless rabbit.”

I use the same takeaway in business, and tell everyone who asks for business advice, “it’s better to be the steady turtle than the careless rabbit.”

Running a business today can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Many business owners I meet will do everything they can to make their business a success, but they shouldn’t overextend themselves in the process. This is particularly true when it comes to finances.

One of the keys to achieving financial stability as a business owner is to regularly review monthly expenses. Doing so can help identify areas where expenses can be cut as well as areas that are generating a positive return for your business (invest more in those areas).

In addition to reviewing your expenses, it’s critical to have reserves (and not just access to credit cards or lines of credit). We never know when the next

downturn may happen or when an emergency expense may occur. If you have 3-6 months’ worth of reserves, you can avoid dipping into personal savings or taking on debt to keep your business afloat.

Don’t worry if you don’t have the reserves in a bank account today; this is where the slow and steady part comes into play. Make regular deposits into a savings account each month; before too long, you will have one month’s worth of reserves, then two months, then it’s six months. The key is to start doing it TODAY!

Having your financial matters in order, namely expenses and reserves, will allow you to spend more time focusing on your customers and employees. If you can give both groups the attention they deserve, you will almost certainly win the race!

Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or

a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

The Differences Between Weather Warnings And Watches

Weather is hard to predict. Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy.

When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding

the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences.

The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

Outlook

This is the least serious weather alert. It usually means that hazardous

weather may approach in the next three to seven days. The public should monitor the situation and stay tuned for further updates.

Advisory

With an advisory, weather conditions are not overly serious but could prove inconvenient. Individuals should be cautious and prudent when preparing supplies

or traveling.

Watch

During a weather watch, there is an increased risk of a hazardous weather occurrence, though the timing or location is still uncertain. This is when it is essential to practice an evacuation or preparedness plan and stock up on any lastminute supplies.

Warning

The most serious of the weather impact notifications, a warning constitutes an imminent or likely event. The weather may cause a threat to property or life. Immediate action to stay safe is necessary.

While these alerts are based on the severity of impending weather, it is important to note that the NWS will not necessarily

follow the same timeline with issuing alerts. That depends on how fast a weather situation develops. If there is time, an advisory, then a watch and then a warning may be issued. However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. To date, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, and also o ers education programs and scholarships to Long Island students, sponsors the Long Island Sound Award, and features traveling educational exhibits, including a state-of-the-art mobile museum.

Last year, the organization opened its doors to their new awe-inspiring 8,800 Sq Ft facility in Stony Brook, NY, which features a large exhibition area, theater, performance area and an o cial “Hall of Fame Museum.”

All entry tickets include free parking and access to all their location has to o er. As a non-proﬁt, your admission fee and donations help to support their Education Scholarship program for high school students and their Health and Harmony program, bringing musicians and entertainers to senior centers, hospitals and other places of need.

“For over a decade, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame has been delighted to distribute tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships, providing support to numerous aspiring professional musicians and music teachers,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Education Committee Chairman.

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

Runner Jasmine Parreno Lets Nothing Stand In Her Way

Jasmine Parreno was an avid runner, and it was a huge part of her day-to-day life. Unfortunately, this passion of hers came under fire when she was diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2021.

She battled a serious case of double pneumonia and both her lungs became severely damaged as a result. It was in those moments where she truly questioned if she would ever get the chance to run again. Persistent long haulers proceeded to present its symptoms with acute respiratory failure. Still, slowly but surely, she began to recooperate and has since recovered– despite some mild symptoms.

According to Jasmine, it was time for her to get back on her feet. She decided to challenge herself and hit the pavement once again. She ran her first 5K with OG Training Academy in Lindenhurst.

She hopes that her story would serve as a means to spread motivation and hope to those that are struggling with any illness, whether it be mentally or physically. “Do not let an illness, of any kind, convince you that something is impossible,” Jasmine said. “It doesn’t mean that it will be easy, but definitely worth trying!”

Currently, Jasmine has signed up for her first Sprint Triathalon with New York Triathalon at Rockaway Beach and will continue her running career, letting nothing stand in her way!

Islip Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award during the annual Silver Award Ceremony and Breakfast, which included a keynote address by the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Labor Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Rosalie Drago.

The Silver Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by each recipient as they join an elite group of young women who earn the highest Girl Scout honor a Cadette Scout can achieve. Members of the West Islip Service Unit 617, East Islip Service Unit 640 and Bayshore/ Brightwaters Service Unit 642; Leah Giana, Hayden Wolin, Keira Johnson, Nicole Grieco, Erin Burns, Makenna Miller, Juliette Keingstein, Mikalia Budnik, Leah Stowers, Simone George, Arianna Sanchez, Kylie Lewis, Ava Morrisey, Elizabeth Camaratta, Madelyn Holliday, Yaslinne Corona, Emilia Cicale, Sage Lyons, Angelina Codispoti, Emma Demarco, Jessica Stowers, Leah Anthony, Sophia Mckierno, Abigail Ife, Lilith Gundersen, Isabella Petraglia, and Tyla Stephenson were among those acknowledged for this great accomplishment.

“The Silver Award is the highest distinction that Girl Scouts in this age range can earn,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino. “It takes a great deal of responsibility, dedication, and confidence for these Girls to complete these important projects as they create a notable positive impact in their community. I applaud these girls’ commitment to making a difference and joining a highly distinguished group of

accomplished young women.”

To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them and would greatly benefit the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette Journey before beginning their Silver Award project. To meet the Girl Scout Silver Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.

Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Through the process, Silver Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problemsolving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others.

Troop 2261 members Leah Giana, Hayden Wolin, and Keira Johnson group created parent comfort kits for families of children who are patients at Good Samaritan Hospital. The kits included basic toiletries that the hospital does not have to supply to patients.

Nicole Grieco, Erin Burns and Makenna Miller created kits to help relieve the stress of children about to have surgery or other medical treatment in our local hospital. Each of the kits contained sensory toys to help calm children.

Juliette Keingstein and Mikalia Budnik filled kits for their local hospital to help staff with activities for developmentally delayed adult patients. The activities are to assist the hospital staff in finding new ways to calm

the nerves and occupy time of these patients.

Leah Stowers, Simone George, Arianna Sanchez and Kylie Lewis researched and organized a camping cookbook filled with every meal that could be cooked while camping.

Ava Morrisey, Elizabeth Camaratta, Madelyn Holliday and Yaslinne Corona researched traditional Girl Scout ceremonies and customs at camp and designed a book for other Girl Scout troops to use and enjoy on their trip to camp.

Emilia Cicale, Sage Lyons and Angelina Codispoti collected and donated storage bins and shoes for the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Emma Demarco, Jessica Stowers, Leah Anthony and Sophia Mckierno created a camp book filled with activities that are best fit for troop camping. After researching and testing the activities they designed and created the book themselves.

Abigail Ife, Lilith Gundersen, Isabella Petraglia and Tyla Stephenson built a bench for Walker Beach so that neighbors and veterans would have a place to sit by the flagpole to enjoy as they pay respects for those who have served.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Come Together For The Making An Impact Breakfast

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) recently held their 2023 Making an Impact Breakfast, featuring a panel full of Long Island industry leaders. Held in support of the Girl Scout Discovery World STEM & Art Center, the event highlighted the importance of the Girl Scout Mission and its many positive impacts on our society.

“Part of the Girl Scout’s mission is to help shape the leaders of tomorrow, and we were thrilled to have been joined by so many strong women in leadership for our Making an Impact Breakfast event to inspire our Girl Scouts,” said Tammy Severino, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “As women and girls, it is important to highlight these important discussions during this event, as they often get overlooked. We are extremely thankful to all that attended and supported this event as it will support many Girl Scouts, providing them access to experiences they otherwise would not have.”

The event featured Keynote Speaker Dr. Sandra Lindsay, Vice

President of Public Health Advocacy at Northwell Health. A panel discussion was moderated by Tammy Severino, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, and Donna Smeland, Chair of the Board of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. Panelists included Catherine Canadeo, Board-Certified Holistic Health Coach and CEO of Canadeo Health & Wellness Corp., Jackie Gordon, Retired Lt. Colonel of the US Army, Karen Sweeny, Vice President of Member Experience, Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Kristin Thorne, Investigative Reporter, WABC-TV Eyewitness News.

The panel discussion addressed the important topics of mental wellness and self-care, financial literacy, career preparatory programming, combatting gender gaps in STEM fields, and more. Participants shared personal experiences and insight regarding these vital issues and shared advice on navigating these instances best.

Proceeds from the event will help GSSC reimagine its Discovery World STEM + Arts Center. The Discovery

World STEM + Arts Center is located at GSSC’s Camp Sobaco in Yapank, New York. The STEM Center provides girls with interactive experiences, demonstrations, and presentations on all things Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. LaLota Announces Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County

Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 closein weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and

associated hardware. One of the manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.

As the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) gets ready to kick off its Spring Season in our 10 leagues from Long Island to the Canadian border, the growth of our programs has created a need for additional referees and assistant refs.

There are many wonderful things that happen when a person starts to ref including earning money, having the best view of the action, learning to manage people, learning more about the game, staying or becoming fit, expanding yourself by leaving your comfort zone as well as meeting the greatest people on soccer fields, including your new officiating colleagues. Becoming a youth soccer ref could be one of the best decisions

you ever make!

Eastern New York is seeking new referees to be in the middle and/or on the line as assistant referees in youth soccer games. The minimum age is 14 years old to become certified.

Classes are happening throughout the state and they consist of an online learning process wrapped up by a field session. For more info about certification near you, please contact State Youth Referee Administrator Cheryl Aronson at syra@enysreferee. org and she will let you know how to get started.

With approximately 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the nonprofit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members

are affiliated with 10 leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Children With Special Needs. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away. ENYYSA is a proud member of the United States Soccer Federation and United States Youth Soccer.
