am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

Consulate Meeting The Italian Consulate recently held a meeting with school districts who implement Italian world language or dual language programs, bringing in representatives from Long Island, New York City, New Jersey and Yonkers. Among them were Priscilla Zarate, the Islip School District’s ENL and world language K-12 coordinator, and Islip High School language teachers Linda

Gallelli and Giuseppa Prainito, who met with different organizations that collaborate with the Italian consulate to provide support and resources to programs. “We also learned about several initiatives through the Italian American Committee of Education,” said Zarate, “including cultural trips and tours, professional development for teachers, internships for

high school students and travel abroad programs. Currently, the Italian Consulate is offering to pay AP online testing for any students who are eligible to take it and who may be taking other AP exams. As a result of this opportunity, we have an estimated 11 students from our world language Italian program who are interested in taking this AP exam.”

Canine Unit Visits The Islip School District continued its partnership with the Suffolk County Police Department on April 19th, with the department’s Canine Narcotics Unit conducting a sweep of student lockers at Islip High School. This is the second year that the district and the SCPD have worked together to bring the Canine Unit to the high school.

While students and staff were in their classrooms, two highly trained dogs and their handlers moved throughout the hallways and empty locker rooms. These dogs are able to detect illegal, unlawful or unauthorized substances, but after a thorough review of the building, the dogs and their handlers reported no “hits” for these kinds of materials.

“Principal Michael Mosca and I are grateful to Lt. Tom Zagajeski, the commanding officer of the 3rd Precinct Crime Section, and his officers, for their support and partnership,” said Superintendent of Schools Susan Schnebel. “The district will continue to remain vigilant at all times to prevent illegal drugs from entering our schools.”

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. If you are someone who faces any sort of disability or an emotional or vulnerable problem, please visit their website to learn more about how they can help you - and don’t hesitate to get help! Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Lastly, Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

The EXCEL Science Olympiad team from Islip Middle School team earned three medals at the New York State Science Olympiad Competition, held in Syracuse on April 14th-15th. Robert Belcher and Joyce Johnson won first place in the Crime Busters event, Johnson and Tim Mak earned fifth in Battery Buggy, and Maddie Mulholland finished ninth in Towers. “To make it to this level is quite an accomplishment, and their performance at states was terrific,” said team adviser Julia Johnson. This year’s team consisted of Abby Alfano, Belcher, Liam

Biscari, Myles Freelin, Johnson, Tyler Lofberg, Joseph Maguire, Mak, Mulholland, Stella Reagan, Steven Schadt, Kacey Schassberger, Katelyn Wallace and Brielle Zink. The team of 14 middle schoolers from the district’s academically gifted program had previously finished in fifth place overall at the March 15 regional competition against other teams from Long Island, held in Dix Hills, qualifying Islip for the state event. Regional medal wins included first place in Crime Busters for Belcher and Johnson, third place in Road Scholar for Mak and Schadt, fourth in

both Battery Buggy and Hovercraft for Johnson and Mak, and seventh in Towers for Lofberg and Mulholland. “Our team this year was a ‘young’ one,” said Johnson. “We were in a growing year with 95 percent of our team members being rookies. Islip is always one of the smaller schools at this rigorous regional competition, with many schools competing with multiple teams and many coaches, and we also competed with only 14 team members, making us even more the underdog. Well, like a feel-good movie, the underdog came out on top.”

Joseph Robert Falcon, Islip Terrace, New York, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on December 13th, 2017, officially making him the 75th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip

Terrace. Joseph’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, May 19th, starting at 11 a.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road, East Islip. Joseph is a member of Troop 205, sponsored

by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Joseph served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Webmaster, Order of the Arrow Representative, and Troop Guide – where he has assisted his younger Scouts in their Rank Advancements. Joseph was elected by his fellow Scouts in Troop 205 to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – the Boy Scout’s honorary camping organization. He has been a “Top 10” member of Troop 205, based on attendance and participation for the last three years and he completed the National Youth Leadership Training in 2017. Because of his outstanding commitment and the leadership skills

he has obtained through Scouting; at this past election in January, 2018, Joseph became the first Junior Assistant Scoutmaster selected in the Troop in quite a few years. Joseph has had many unique Scouting experiences; including being a participant Scout at the 2017 National Boy Scout Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit Boy Scout High Adventure Base in West Virginia and a 2017 Crew Member at the BSA Florida Seabase – sailing for an entire week around the Florida Keys. Prior to this adventure, Joseph was Scuba Diver and First Aid/CPR/AED Certified. He was also a summer camper for one summer season at the Boy Scout Camp Wakpominee. Additional memorable Troop 205 trips and campouts for Joseph included Annapolis, MD; Mystic Seaport, CT; and the Montauk Fishing Trip and campout. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second

Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Joseph has actually earned 28 merit badges. The Service Project that Joseph developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends, family members, and community organizations was the Town of Islip “Kids Safety Day,” on September 23rd, 2017, where over 200 kids and adults participated. 570 volunteer hours were invested in Joseph’s Eagle Scout Project. As Joseph reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Ever since I joined Scouting, I have always wanted to become an Eagle Scout. I’ve wanted to see an Eagle Project that helped explain safety to younger kids. I have had an interest in keeping kids safe from the many hazards they may face in their everyday lives. I believe that with the way the world is today, safety is something that should be taught to all kids from an early age. This is the reason I wanted my Eagle

Project to be a kid’s safety day. Joseph is currently a sophomore at East Islip High School, East Islip, New York, where he has been on the Honor Roll and was the Homecoming King/Representative for the sophomore Class, and has been in Student Government. Joseph has also been a member of the East Islip Historical Society and the East Islip PTSA. Volunteering has been a way of life for Joseph as he has been in the St. Mary’s Youth Ministry since the sixth grade, participated in the EJ Autism Walk/Run in 2016, and has worked on 12 Troop 205 Eagle Service Projects. Joseph has aspirations of being a college student at Farmingdale State College upon his high school graduation and to study weather and Meteorology to prepare himself for a Meteorologist career in the future. Joseph is the son of Debbie and Ray Falcon of Islip Terrace. He is the grandson of Bob and Florence Pesiri of Amityville.

Persevering despite the opening night’s rescheduling due to snow, East Islip High School’s annual musical, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” was presented on March 23rd, 24th and 25th. Based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel of the same name, “Drood” is a comedic, interactive murder mystery that allows the audience to take part in the action as detectives. Dickens died in 1870 before he was able to reveal the culprit, but the award-winning 1985 Rupert Holmes adaptation

solves the predicament by asking the audience to vote on the identity of the murderer and other characters. The East Islip cast included Kyle WestgateAddessi (The Chairman), Andrew Timmins (John Jasper), Karina Gallagher (Alice Nutting/Edwin Drood), Victoria Tiernan (Rosa Bud), Sara Rapuzzi (Helena Landless), Stone Locke (Neville Landless), Katelyn Spina (Princess Puffer), Jake Acocella (Mr. Crisparkle), Sebestian Ovalle (Durdles), Michael Silva (Bazzard) and Kieran

Tohill (Deputy). “Our high school students performed amazingly,” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages. “From vocal work to the pit orchestra to the stage crew and the choreography, each element was wonderfully executed. It is due to the dedication of our teachers to our students’ success that we could incorporate audience participation to provide three different endings that replicated professionalism.”

Hitting Home As part of their yearlong substance abuse awareness campaign, East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club and adviser Bridget Lopiccolo staged their 15th annual Ghost-Out Day on March 23rd. A gong rang on the loudspeakers every 20 minutes throughout the school day, signaling the entrance of a student dressed as the Grim Reaper into a classroom. As Lopiccolo read aloud from real-life tragic police calls of teens being killed due to drugs or alcohol, the Reaper stalked the rooms

and selected someone to “strike,” who was then asked to wear a special black T-shirt and remain silent for the rest of the day to signify that a life has been impaired or lost due to a destructive decision. “This is one of the most important things SADD does,” said senior Hallie McCarthy. “I think it’s important for teens to know how someone’s life and the people around them can be affected by destructive decisions. It is haunting to hear that gong ring throughout the school day knowing what it represents and the message

it is sending.” “For the past 15 years as the SADD adviser, it has been my grim task to hold this day each year,’ said Lopiccolo. “I know it is a difficult day for many, but it is extremely important that students know that with each decision they make, there is a consequence.” This year, Lopiccolo added a new element, asking students in each classroom she visited if they knew someone who had died due to alcohol or drugs. “So many students raised their hands,” Lopiccolo said. “What a scary reality.”

Electric Bus Visits

More than 50 school district leaders got their first look at what many say is the future of pupil transportation – the first U.S. made all-electric, zero-emissions school bus. Currently on an inaugural cross-country tour, this battery-powered prototype bus made a stop in Bay Shore, Long Island, where school board members, superintendents and transportation officials participated in a two-hour introduction and test ride of the bus. The event was hosted by Suffolk Transportation Service, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. The bus was built by Blue Bird Corporation, one of three main school bus makers in the U.S., and its batteries and drivetrain were developed by Adomani Electric. “Electric and hybrid buses will have a big role in the future of pupil transportation on Long Island. Our school districts already know this and have been asking us when an electric bus will be available,” said John Corrado, President and CEO of Suffolk Transportation Service. “In the last several years, we began to develop our own hybrid vehicle and also encouraged Blue Bird, one

of the nation’s largest bus manufacturers, to focus on electric technology.” In just the last several years, advances in battery technology have greatly increased the potential range for electric-powered school buses, making them far more viable for everyday fleet use. The buses “plug in” overnight and have a potential range up to 125 miles per charge. “The first thing you notice is that it has no tailpipe. It is literally the cleanest school bus in the U.S., yet has just as much power as a gas or diesel powered vehicle,” said Phil Horlock, President of Blue Bird Corporation, who discussed the bus at the event. “Mechanically, the bus is amazingly simple and as a result, is much easier and less costly to maintain. Of course, it offers huge savings on fuel costs.” “We encourage and welcome the commitment of Blue Bird, which is taking the lead in producing buses that run on alternative sources of energy,” said Corrado who said he expects that an all-electric bus will begin operating on a regular school district route in Suffolk County sometime this year. Suffolk Transportation Service operates over 1,400

vehicles, mainly diesel buses and gasoline vans, serving 18 school districts. The event was hosted by the Islip Town School Board Association, compromised of board of education members from districts throughout the Town of Islip. “We’re very excited to be at a point at which this cutting edge bus is ready to go into service. This can be a win-win for both the taxpayers and the environment,” said Sue Schnebel, Superintendent of Islip School District. Another attendee was Fred Koelbel, Director of Facilities and Transportation for Port Jefferson School District. “What a message students receive when they ride on a bus like this. There are messages about sustainability, green energy, and messages about the future. This becomes something they are exposed to every day on their way to and from school,” he said. While electric buses are more costly, members of the Islip Town School Board Association learned about grants and funding approaches that may be available which can dramatically bring down the initial $350,000 price tag.
