Created by Mr. Silvers when he was a student at MIT, a photomosaic is a large-scale, detailed picture made up of many photographs. Following their study on the artist, the students worked in groups to create their own mosaic murals that will be used to decorate.

Since its inaugural year in 2011, Taste of Tuckahoe continues to be a popular event with area residents and attendance growing each year. Last year’s celebration drew over 450 people, and this year’s turnout is sure to be even larger with the addition of the VIP hour, and Chef Christian Mir, proprietor of Stone Creek Inn, an East End favorite for 17 years. Mir honed his culinary skills in restaurants in both France and the U.S., and his restaurant has been hailed as a “culinary tour de force” by Zagat, and a “sit up and take notice experience” by the New York Times. As in previous years, all proceeds from the Taste of Tuckahoe will benefit the children of Tuckahoe School, and will be used toward enhancing their education.

Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade. There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”

through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Parents learned about services that help students prepare for and obtain a job. One parent stated that when they attend any type of parent support event they feel that they know as much or more than the presenters, but that was not the case with this Expo. It offered a lot of new information. Parents also commented that the seminar was comprehensive. There were representatives and speakers not usually at such seminars. Many attendees asked for it to be longer so that they could participate in all workshops.

As part of a yearlong substance abuse awareness campaign, East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club staged its 11th Annual Grim Reaper Day on March 28th. Approximately every 25 minutes throughout the school day, a gong sounded and a rotating cast of

anonymous students dressed as the Grim Reaper selected and “struck” a student. The 16 students chosen as “victims” were asked to don black T-shirts and remain silent for the remainder of the day as a reminder of lives lost due to alcohol abuse. “Each year when SADD runs the Grim Reaper

Each summer, over 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. Host families simply want to share their homes with city children and the pure joys of summertime outside of the city. Medical Marvels

Eleven science research students from East Islip High School – Emma Benardos, Nick Carney, Laura Coffin, Meaghan Coles, Jake MacMorris, Peter Mendez, Hetal Patel, Karli Pipitone, Julia Rizzo, Caleb Schulman and Alex Viruet – participated in the second annual Medical Marvels competition, held at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset on March 14th. Two teams of students developed an action plan to respond to a hypothetical catastrophic storm hitting

a coastal community, similar to the impact of Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. Their plan focused on preparation before the storm, actions taken during the emergency and subsequent recovery efforts. The students spent several weeks researching the public policy, science and technology aspects of their plan, and then submitted a research paper to the Feinstein Institute. The plan was judged according to protocols used at the National Institutes of Health.

Each team then created a poster summarizing the major aspects of their plan and rehearsed an oral presentation for the judges. On the day of the competition, judges visited each project and asked follow-up questions to the students. The poster session was followed by a presentation describing the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s actual response to Superstorm Sandy.

HELPING THE HOMELESS - East Islip’s altruistic varsity softball team attended this year’s Have A Heart For The Homeless Candlelight Vigil for the Homeless event at Farmingdale College on April 8th, an annual event sponsored by the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. The softball squad volunteered their time by handing out winter coats, nonperishable food items, candles and bracelets, and each member of the East Islip team personally donated items for the homeless such as clothing, baby items, toiletries and canned goods. PHOTOMOSAICS - Third- and fourth-grade students at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School have been learning about artist Robert Silvers and photomosaics. Created by Mr. Silvers when he was a student at MIT, a photomosaic is a large-scale, detailed picture made up of many photographs. Following their study on the artist, the students worked in groups to create their own mosaic murals that will be used to decorate the hallways of Sherwood. The students worked with art teachers Bethany Majestic and Mandy Salgado.

Kindergarten and firstgrade students in Islip’s Wing Elementary School are learning the Magic of Reading, as they’re participating in the school’s annual Parents As Reading Partners program. This year, for the first time, the school invited special guests to read to the students and take them on a magical journey using their imaginations. With the assistance of Board

of Education President Catherine Romano, trustee David Twomey, Superintendent of Schools Susan A. Schnebel, as well as other members of district and buildinglevel administration, the Wing students enjoyed a morning of reading. “This is the building where they begin their education in Islip,” said Wing Principal Christopher Smalley. “By
