Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

Birthday Boxes

York State PTA Award of Excellence for his music composition “What Is Your Story?” Rubinson’s original piece of music was submitted for the annual PTA Reflections arts contest, and has now advanced to the National PTA Reflections competition, where his work will be judged against compositions by students nationwide.

Second-graders at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School wanted to give back, so they decided to send one or two “birthday boxes” per class to the children in need via Birthday-in-a-Box. The charity program was created in 2005 to

serve homeless children in domestic violence shelters, scattered sites, motels and other locations. Each birthday box contains everything necessary for a great birthday celebration. Excited to be able to help provide these fun birthday parties, the Connetquot

students brought in items such as party hats, cake mix and candles and packed them into boxes wrapped in colorful wrapping paper. “It made me feel happy to help kids that can’t afford to have birthdays,” said second-grader Julianna Schmidt.

Competing at State Following its thirdplace finish overall in the county, Islip High School’s Science Olympiad A team competed at the New York State tournament, held from March 10th-11th at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Islip’s students

earned four Top 10 medals in their events for an overall 31st-place finish in the state. Top finishers for Islip included junior Julia Hormann and sophomore Matt Southard, earning first place in Forensics;

Hormann and Morgiana McDevitt, who came in fifth in Write-It/Do-It; Kevin Lewis and McDevitt, finishing seventh in Towers; and Hormann and Lewis, finishing seventh in Electric Vehicle. At a recent author celebration, students in Carol Wilson’s secondgrade class at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School completed their understanding of narrative writing and proudly shared their written pieces with family, friends and administrative staff.

The students showcased the important components of the school’s new writing curriculum as they expressed sensory details, voice, transitional phrases, emotions and appropriate sentence structure. “My second-graders received written compliments from our

guests and were amazed to hear such positive feedback about their pieces,” said Wilson. “I am very proud of all their hard work and effort, as each step of the process enabled the students to become accomplished writers.”

Earning His Eagle Badge

Matthew Colagioia, Islip Terrace, New York, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on April 13th, 2016, officially making him the 63rd Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Matthew’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, May 16th, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. Matthew is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Matthew has served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader and Troop Guides – where he has assisted his younger Scouts in their Rank Advancements. Matthew has had many unique Scouting experiences; including being a Crew Member for the BSA Sea Base, where he and his crew sailed, scuba dived, snorkeled, and

fished off the Florida Keys for one week. He was also a summer camper for four seasons at Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains in Ft. Ann, NY and participated in many weekend campouts with Troop 205 on and off Long Island, NY in a total of 63 camping nights. This has included weekend camping trips to Baltimore, Philadelphia, West Virginia, hiking the Gettysburg Historic Trails in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Hudson River Valley White Water Rating, and the memorable West Point Academy Camporee. Matthew was also elected by his fellow Scouts in Troop 205 to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – the Boy Scout’s honorary camping organization.He also earned his BSA Snorkeling and Kayaking Awards and as a member of Troop 205 “Top Ten” for attendance and participation in Troop 205. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Matthew has actually earned 32 merit badges. The Service Project that Matthew developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was building a four tiered stage for the East Islip Public Library outdoor Children’s area so the children can play outdoors and have performances during the warmer months. As Matthew reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Scouting has taught me many social values, earned me many friends, and impacted my morals and ideas for the better, and everything I have learned will be with me for the rest of my life. While most would say Scouting is just a club or organization, it is more like a family, filled with people who want to help you succeed

Matthew was also a member of the Chess Club, the Pep Band, and Stage Crew. He played Tennis in high school and was a member of the Shot Put Crew on the High School Track and Field team. He has also spent six years practicing Kempo Taekwondo. Matthew has volunteered for the organization, “Keep Islip Clean,” Authors Unlimited, as well as volunteering as a Sunday school teacher at the United Methodist Church for four years. As a member of the church he was part of the M.Y.F. (Methodist youth fellowship) where he volunteered at the church’s soup kitchen feeding the homeless and setting up for church events, in addition to the 90.6 hours of community service he spent with Troop 205. Not including, his own Eagle Service Project and participating in the Troop 205 Saint Bald-Fitz Day. He is currently a freshman at Alvernia University in Reading, PA, where he is studying Healthcare Science - Physical Therapy. Matthew earned a Presidential Scholarship at Alvernia, the Paul Synider Foundation, Lions Club of the Islips, Islip Terrace Woman Fire Dept, Scholarships. Matthew is the son of Jennifer and James Jordan and brother to Chelsea and Candace Colagioia. Matthew comes from a very active Scouting family where his father, James Jordan has been an Assistant Scoutmaster for many years. Jennifer and James are loyal supporters of Troop 205.

Following the performance, student government members partnered with seniors and recited Irish blessings.

“It was so nice to observe the interaction between the students and seniors,” said Rooney. “The students really brought a smile to everyone’s face at the facility.” “Seeing the students read their Irish blessings was a very moving moment,” said Sheridan. “I could see such joy among the seniors as they received their poems.”

Wrestling Mural Michael Dondero and Cynthis Stasio, two of teacher Daniel Figliozzi’s senior art students at East Islip High School, volunteered to create a large-scale mural for the school’s wrestling team. The mural, located on the wrestling room doors, was a

vision proposed by Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. The students brought the work to fruition using enamel paint. “Even though I don’t do sports, it was nice to contribute to one of the other departments at our school,” said Dondero.

Irish Blessings

“I enjoyed doing the mural and contributing to not only the art department, but the school itself and the athletic department,” said Stasio. Both Dondero and Stasio plan to attend art school this fall.

DINOSAUR LESSON - On Wednesday April 5th, students in grades 5-8 at Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip, attended the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to explore a special exhibit regarding dinosaurs. The exhibit is meant to give students a stronger understanding of evolution and the geologic timeline while connecting to popular culture through the movie Jurassic World. The hands on museum also gave students the opportunity to explore all facets of science through inquiry in its purest form. All of the students had a great time!

Don’t Let Your Car Make Your Allergies Worse Cabin air filters clean the incoming air, removing allergens, as long as they’re replaced regularly. “A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can cause contaminants to become so concentrated in the cabin that passengers actually breathe in more fumes and particles when riding in the car than when walking down the street,” explained Rich White, executive

director, Car Care Council. “Replacing the cabin air filter is a simple way for you and your passengers to breathe easier while driving.” In addition to trapping pollen, bacteria, dust and exhaust gases, the cabin air filter prevents leaves, bugs and other debris from entering the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC)

system. A restricted cabin air filter can mean musty odors in the vehicle and impair airflow in the HVAC system, possibly causing interior heating and cooling problems. Over time, the heater and air conditioner may also become damaged by corrosion. Cabin air filters should not be cleaned and reinstalled. Instead, they

should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or per the owner’s manual. Most filters are accessible through a panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or in the interior of the car. An automotive service technician can locate the cabin filter and replace it according to the vehicle’s owner manual. Some filters require basic hand

tools to remove and install their replacement while others just need your hands.
