while going to high school and college, and then later on while working a full time job, I tended to miss quite a number of regular rehearsals leading up to the big recital at the end of the year. Somehow, it always came together in the end. All these years later, my retention seems to have… slipped a bit, I suppose. Mid-April, and I’ve only missed one class – and yet the dance has taken on a “brand new” vibe each week. There’s something to be said for getting old too. And with that, it has occurred to be that I will be reaching the midpoint of my thirties this summer. How did it get so late so soon? as Dr. Seuss mused. How, indeed.

Teens for Jeans With the help of generous community members, Islip High School’s Junior Chamber of Commerce Club recently collected 300 pairs of denim jeans to donate to the homeless, 20 more than the previous year. Islip joined the annual initiative in 2011 through DoSomething.org’s Teens for Jeans campaign. “The number one item requested by people living in shelters is a pair of jeans, and for the past six years, the Junior Chamber of Commerce Club has committed to helping
the homeless,” said club adviser Renee Clock. “This campaign allows teens to take a leadership role in our community by organizing and collecting jeans from family members, neighbors and local businesses. Our students inspire each other to be socially responsible by developing compassion to those in need.” The Town of Islip Youth Bureau, Islip American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Kennedy L.I. Realty again helped to spread
the word about the jeans collection. Melanie Holz, the prevention coordinator at Youth Enrichment Services, spoke to students in the club regarding the importance of community initiatives that enrich the lives of others, before she assisted Clock and teacher Dennis Wickes in delivering the jeans to the United Veterans Beacon House. “It’s always a positive when we help those in need,” said Holz.

Middle schoolers in Islip’s academically gifted EXCEL program earned medals in eight events in the regional competition against 38 other Science Olympiad teams from eastern Long Island. Islip finished fifth overall at the recent event, held at Candlewood Middle School in Dix Hills, allowing the team to take the final qualifying spot and advance to the state level in April. “Our team had been preparing since September, and all of the late nights and weekend work paid off,” said team adviser Julia Johnson. “Islip was one of the few schools competing with only one team, so this was quite an accomplishment. We thank all the mentors who helped students prepare for events, including the new Stony Brook consortium of volunteer students who have been an asset to the team.” The Islip EXCEL Science Olympiad team consists of Anjalee Appalsammy, Liam Biscari, James Cottral, Devin DePass, Elizabeth DeSimone, Aaliyah Esmurria, Mackenzie Howell, Emmie Jensen, Sheyla Lopez, Noah Margolin, Jaelyn McCracken, Victoria Pearsall, Vasu Persaud, Liam Rich and Steven Schadt. Medals were earned in the categories of Crime Busters (sixth place for Esmurria and Pearsall),Dynamic Planet (fifth place for Margolin and Persaud),Ecology (fourth place for Cottral and Pearsall), Invasive Species (third place for Jensen and Rich), Optics (third place for Cottral and Rich), Reach for the Stars (fifth place for Appalsammy and Persaud), Rocks and Minerals (sixth place for Margolin and Persaud), and Towers (fifth place for Esmurria and Pearsall).

Fourth-grade scientists at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School recently explored animal kingdoms, the food chain and food webs, culminating in the dissection of owl pellets. In their studies, they realized that much can
be learned about a barn owl’s diet by analyzing the types of bones in the pellet the owl regurgitates after swallowing its prey whole. The students dissected the owl pellets together and used reference materials to identify the prey animals by their bones. Dozens of tiny
bones were compared to those on a poster of animal skeletons to reveal the types of prey consumed. The hands-on experiment led to a true understanding of how the food web really works.

Madeline Edwards of Islip has been selected to attend Empire Girls State. Edwards was selected based on criteria established by the NYS American Legion Auxiliary. Islip Middle School’s student government paid a memorable, festive visit to residents of the Atria Bay Shore assisted living community on St. Patrick’s Day. With the luck of the Irish upon them, students, faculty and the Atria’s seniors participated in Irish-themed games and a sing-along, guided by advisers Kaitlin Rooney and Christine Sheridan.
Seventh-graders Emily Aguilar, Stephanie Castro, Selina Chan, Keera Kittles and Emma Neri, and sixthgraders Olivia Piazzolla and Nicholas Wilbur, performed various Irish tunes under the direction of orchestra teacher Laura Shaiman. Following the performance, student government members partnered with seniors and recited Irish blessings.
“It was so nice to observe the interaction between the students and seniors,” said Rooney. “The students really brought a smile to everyone’s face at the facility.” “Seeing the students read their Irish blessings was a very moving moment,” said Sheridan. “I could see such joy among the seniors as they received their poems.”
