slip Middle School introduced some compassionate excitement on two Mondays during March, with students’ pinkies painted blue as part of “Mani for a Cure to Bullying.” Sponsored by the school’s Art Club and student government with the support of the PTA, Mani Mondays promoted kindness and empathy among the community. The popular “All Kids Fair” returns to the Melville Marriott for the fifth straight year on Sunday, April 26th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This event, which won first place in the Event Category of the 2014 Long Island Web Awards, is a combination of education and activities expo and health and wellness fair. It offers entertainment choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”
expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest
prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

This award, in memory of environmentalist and naturalist Charles Pulaski, will be presented at the May 5th Islip Town Board meeting that will be held at Connetquot State Park, at 2 p.m. Applications for the Charles Pulaski Memorial Environmental Awards are currently available at Islip Town high schools, or by contacting the following organizations: Great South Bay Audubon; Friends of Connetquot; Seatuck Environmental Association; Boy Scouts and

Pulaski also planted several memorial gardens and was successful in
convincing officials to preserve hundreds of acres of parkland. He shared his enthusiasm for environmental preservation to thousands of people, especially to youngsters and teens to encourage them to “save their world.” The presentation of the Charles Pulaski Memorial Award was a tradition celebrated by the Town for more than 30 years, but was last presented in 2012 because of budgetary constraints. Thanks to the generosity of members of ITEC and others, the award has been resurrected. “We are extremely grateful to our friends on the Town’s Environmental Council for helping us bring back a long standing and important tradition of recognizing students who understand the importance of preserving our environment,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

The group met at the East Islip Post Office and afterwards
at Legislator Cilmi’s office where they ate pizza and engaged in lively discussions with several veterans in attendance. Packages are sent out weekly. Nicholas Dahill, a senior in Dan Figliozzi’s Advanced Placement drawing portfolio class at East Islip High School, submitted his digital drawing “Yukon” to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards this past December. Awards were recently given to students across the country, and Dahill was recently named the recipient of SAWA’s prestigious Gold Key Award. Dahill is an active participant in the school’s art department, taking
additional drawing and electronic illustration courses. “Being in a community of people with similar interests is an inspiring and positive experience, where I’ve made many great friends,” said Dahill. He continues to hone his skills in these courses in preparation for collegiate study, and has received feedback from numerous top art schools. “I aspire to pursue illustration or game art in college and hope to one day get a job in the game or comic book
industries,” said the senior. Dahill’s drawing “Yukon” is a self-portrait of the artist wearing the hide of a bear. “Through the use of delicate line work and saturated color gradients, he conveyed the importance of embracing what you are passionate about,” said Figliozzi, who noted that Dahill is continuing to explore this idea in the body of work he is developing for the concentration section of his Advanced Placement drawing exam.

New System Prioritizing safety, the Islip School District has finalized the operation of its new visitor management system, one that will prove instrumental in helping monitor guests to the buildings. The system’s hardware will be fully installed in time for the first day of use on Monday, April 13th. A crucial part of the district’s long-range plans, the core of the system was paid for as part of the capital bond project approved in 2012. In the first phase, vestibule work was completed for the start of school last fall, with enhanced security cameras for receptionist access to visitors. All security
monitors at each building were also provided with updated visitor and access control training during Superintendent’s Conference Day. The system offers an advanced level of safety procedures. In the past, visitors simply scrawled their names – often with unidentifiable signatures – in paper books as they entered a building. The VMS, by contrast, insures that all guests will need to present a driver’s license or other photo ID (for residents without an ID, information can also be input manually). The system will read the license or ID, akin to a credit card swipe, and
automatically check it against the national sex offender database. A photo will be taken, and a special pass will be created that displays the visitor’s photo. The entire procedure will take less than 10 seconds and will be consistent for every visitor at each of Islip’s schools. The VMS will allow the district to know exactly when a visitor arrives and leaves, and who is in a particular building at any given time. “This puts Islip way ahead of the curve for security and will be a helpful safety measure for staff, students and visitors,” said Donald Flynn, the district’s security consultant.
Grim Reaper Strikes As part of the Students Against Destructive Decisions Club’s campaign against substance abuse, East Islip High School held its 12th Annual Grim Reaper Day on March 27th.
Sixteen student “victims” were chosen to wear black shirts and remain silent for the day as reminders of young lives lost to bad choices. “At the end of the day, I
know we’re giving justice to the children who were lost to alcohol or drugs,” said teacher and SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo.

Islip Middle School introduced some compassionate excitement on two Mondays during March, with students’ pinkies painted blue as part of “Mani for a Cure to Bullying.” Sponsored by the school’s Art Club and student government with the support of the PTA, Mani Mondays promoted kindness and empathy among the community. At the March 9th and 23rd events, manicure stations were set up during lunch periods outside the school cafeterias, and the middle schoolers had their pinkie nails painted with blue nail polish to show support for kindness to all students, and to act as volunteer manicurists. “I think it’s a great
way to show support for anti-bullying,” said eighth-grader Kerry Monahan, a member of student government who volunteered to paint nails at the event. “It’s so simple and anyone can do it.” “The intention of the event was for students to stand up for kindness and compassion and let people know that it’s not OK to bully others,” said student government advisers Sue Lange and Shari Pennington. “The event was a huge success and we had an excellent turnout, with many students excited to show their support. Students are becoming educated and aware that what they say and do does truly impact other people’s lives.”

Living For Now Over the past few months, I’ve come to appreciate the present. The entire idea of “living in the now” highlights the fact that life is fleeting. When I’m 100 years old, I don’t want to look back on my life and wish I enjoyed my childhood more. Sure, it is important to make the right decisions, but having fun is what is really important to me. My brother is sixteen years old. In just a few weeks, he will turn seventeen. Watching him grow up has been my proudest accomplishment. He might not always make the smartest decisions, but I know that he will always do the right thing when it counts. I feel like I’m somewhat responsible for shaping the man that he is becoming. I’m happy to say that I’ve had an influence on him. When he and I are grown and have families, we might forget to stop and smell the roses. Right now, we don’t
have many responsibilities. I think I can speak for both of us when I say that our upbringings have been studded with instances of joy – and love. Even though it only feels like I’ve been away at school for a few weeks, in about a month I’ll be done for the summer. At that point, one quarter of my college experience will be in the record books. And three years after that, I’ll be in the real world. I’m not ready for that. I’m still enjoying the present! I like to think that overly planning for the future takes away from our experiences in the present. It is a little like borrowing happiness at the expense of enjoying today. Hopefully, I can enjoy my life in every stage. I do not want to be another statistic sucked into the corporate monotony. I want to make myself happy, while making my family proud.

Stony Brook University is the first higher education institution committed to providing cancer researchers as mentors to high school students under a program run by “Stand Up To Cancer” (SU2C) and PBS LearningMedia. Called the EMPEROR Science Award Program, the education initiative encourages students from economically disadvantaged high schools to pursue careers in science, with a particular emphasis on cancer research through a year of mentorship with a scientist from a leading research institution or industry. Known as an institution that provides undergraduate students with opportunities to conduct research, Stony Brook University is also a national leader in providing research mentoring programs and opportunities for qualified high school students in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics)
disciplines. As part of the EMPEROR Science Award Program, researchers from the Stony Brook University Cancer Center will mentor qualifying students. According to SU2C, applications will be available in August 2015 for the program on PBS LearningMedia’s website and on the SU2C website. Students may apply for awards or may be nominated by teachers. The first 100 Awardees, high school students from Title I, or similarly “economically disadvantaged” schools, who will receive one-onone science mentoring over the course of a year or an intensive summer schedule, as well as $1,500 grants, will be announced in late 2015. Students will be connected with science mentors from a host of high-profile medical research centers, from among more than 100 SU2C-affiliated institutions as well as universities and industry leaders in cancer
diagnosis and treatment. The education initiative was announced on March 24th in connection with “Ken Burns Presents Cancer: The EMPEROR of All Maladies,” a film by Barak Goodman which will air on PBS as a three-part series on Monday, March 30, Tuesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 1st. “The need to increase cancer research to discover cures for many forms of cancer remains a top priority nationally, and this program will provide a pipeline to mentor a new generation of budding cancer researchers,” said Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine. “We are thrilled to be the first Cancer Center to support this educational initiative and believe our research faculty will be ideal mentors for the selected students.”

Leading Long Island’s public schools to greatness – that was the theme of SCOPE’s 14th Annual School District Awards Dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 23rd. The annual event was part of SCOPE’s celebration of 50 years serving children and their families. More than 140 employees from dozens of school districts across Long Island were honored for their extraordinary contributions and dedication during the 2014-2015 school year. Awards were presented in five categories: School Board Service, Community Service, Teacher Service,
Support Staff Service and Administrator Service. Honorees in these five categories received a personalized plaque in recognition of their outstanding achievements. In his welcoming remarks, SCOPE Executive Director George Duffy thanked those in attendance for serving their communities with such dignity and dedication. He also thanked them for addressing the challenges that thousands of students face on a daily basis. Susan Schnebel, president of SCOPE’s Board of Directors and superintendent of the Islip School District, addressed
the honorees by telling those assembled: “Those being honored this evening are the cornerstones of our community. The contest, which runs from March 20th to May 22nd, 2015, represents a unique opportunity for students to become involved with the premier regional celebration of the arts on Long Island, win prizes and see their winning entries in an art exhibit at Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City, NY. Long Island Children’s Museum President Suzanne LeBlanc announced news of the art exhibit at the Museum featuring the winning selections. “At the Children’s Museum we believe that there is a vital need for public spaces to exhibit the creative works of our neighbors. Exhibiting the artwork of our community’s children is one way to encourage them to value and participate in the visual arts and develop the next generation of audiences for galleries and museums across Long Island. Seeing their contemporaries’ artwork on display will serve as inspiration to all our visitors to keep the “arts alive.” Arts Alive LI 2015 is

On Saturday, May 2nd, the Long Island Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Collaborative of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, will hold the inaugural Long Island Screening Day for Perinatal M o o d and A n x i e t y Disorders Awareness event. The goal of the event is to raise awareness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Free screenings will be held at various public locations where new parents frequent. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are common health concerns for many expectant or new
mothers. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) can begin anytime up to twelve months after delivery and is the most common complication related to childbearing. However, the majority who suffer from these medical illnesses go unrecognized and untreated. Women need to know this is treatable and they are not alone. The month of May is officially Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder Awareness Month in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Within Nassau County there are at least 3,500 families and in Suffolk County at least 4,000 families are affected

Donated blood is perishable and must be constantly replenished to keep up with the demand. Red blood cells, with a shelf life of only 42 days, are the most frequently transfused blood component, and are always needed by hospitals. Eligible donors can give red cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. Double red cell donations yield twice the usual amount of red cells
in a single appointment and are accepted at select donation locations. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at the donation appointment. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, and double red cells may be donated every 112 days, up to three times per year.
