By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. Islip High School’s varsity girls basketball team captured their first-ever Class A and Small School county championships with thrilling come-frombehind February playoff victories over Mattituck and Commack. The Lady Bucs went 12-0 during the League V regular season to win their first league title since 1985. After beating ShorehamWading River, 61-40, on Feb. 13 in the opening round of the playoffs, they defeated Hampton Bays, 73-56, on Feb. 16 in the second round. In the third meeting of the year for the two teams, Islip met defending county champions Harborfields for the Class A championship on February 19th at the

Selden campus of Suffolk County Community College. By halftime, Islip was trailing by eight points, but came back out and put Harborfields away for good by a score of 52-41. In the next game, Islip took on Mattituck for the Suffolk County Small School championship game, held February 24th at SCCC’s Brentwood campus. The Lady Bucs were again down at halftime, this time by five points, but team captains Caleigh DeCaprio and Taryn Ohmiller helped ramp up the intensity level, and Islip blew out Mattituck in the second half to win 64-46. On February 26th, the Lady Bucs battled toprated Commack – winner of the Large School title

Ohmiller (who will attend Stony Brook this fall on a lacrosse scholarship) needed just seven points to reach the 1,000-point scoring milestone for her four-year career, which she attained in the first quarter, earning her a game ball presented by Section XI basketball coordinator Kevin O’Reilly. The Lady Bucs held a one-point advantage at halftime, but Commack came back to defeat Islip, 51-44. The team’s last game was the Long Island championship at St. Joseph’s College, where they fought Nassau Class A champ Floral Park for a trip to the state championships. It was a tight game throughout, and the Lady Bucs cut the deficit to three points with less than three minutes remaining, but in the end, Islip lost, 62-53. Ohmiller and fellow standout Sanne van Poelgeest were named to the All-Tournament team, an award given to only seven players. At the All-County awards banquet on March 9th, all five of Islip’s starters – DeCaprio, Julia Hande, Meg Oberg, Ohlmiller and van Poelgeest – were recognized as All-League athletes. Oberg, Ohlmiller and van Poelgeest were also named to the All-County team, and Hande was named All-Conference. Cheyenne Coughlin and DeCaprio were named Academic AllCounty, and van Poelgeest was named League V MVP. Reflections Finalist

WOMEN CELEBRATED - Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Councilman Steven Flotteron joined women in Fire Service and EMS at Brookwood Michael Orgera, a fourth- Elementary School, was Hall in East Islip for an evening celebrating the History of Women of Islip Town’s grader at John F. Kennedy chosen to represent East Emergency Services.

Islip in the visual arts category of this year’s PTA Reflections arts contest. Orgera’s project, titled “Mom,” earned him a New York State Reflections Award of Excellence. This state PTA accolade means that Orgera will move on as a national-level finalist, one of only four from New York State this year and the first national contender in many years for the district. “We are very proud of Michael’s creative efforts,” said JFK Principal Aileen O’Rourke.
