Sunday February 24th the Dance Connection Competition Team performed for a packed theater at the Concert Hall at the State University of New York’s Purchase College in Purchase, NY to raise funds for Dancers Responding to AIDS. The team had raised money through ticket sales, online fundraising and put together a themed basket for the annual cocktail reception and auction. Before performing, they were able to participate in a musical theatre dance workshop with renowned choreographer Billy Griffin whose credits include the Broadway and first national tour of Mary Poppins, Young Frankenstein, and White Christmas, and later on in the evening they took to the stage to perform their numbers “Beauty and the Beast” and “Hard Knock Life”. The studio also had 2018 Dancers Inc. Dancer

of the Year Emily Civitella, 2018 Mr. Teen Dancers Inc. Thomas Henderson, and Competition Team Member Ginger Mastrosimone representing the studio in Dancers Inc.’s performance for the evening. Our team had a wonderful experience this weekend coming together with studios and

and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe. When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them. I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired. When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere? It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere. That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly

spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere. It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel. Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in. The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have

Turkey Meatloaf Your Family Will Love

This week we're sharing a recipe for turkey meatloaf that requires only a handful of ingredients and is sure to please the entire family.

Preparation In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, Lipton onion soup mix, eggs, water, ketchup and bread crumbs.

Use 2 lbs. of chopped turkey meat for a larger gathering of four or more people, or 1 lb. for three or less people. The below is the full recipe for 2 lbs. of turkey meat. For 1 lb. simply cut all ingredients in half.

Fold, knead and mix together using your hands (don't forget to wash hands after handling raw turkey meat). With a large serving spoon, scoop mixture into baking pan and evenly spread out, shaping into a loaf shape.

What You Will Need 2 lbs. of Ground Turkey 1 packet of Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix 2 Whole Eggs 3/4 Cup Water 1/3 Cup Ketchup 3/4 Cup Plain Dry Bread Crumbs

Place pan onto center rack of oven and bake for one hour. Let stand for ten minutes and serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy!

Middle schoolers in Islip’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted were treated to a visit this year from Dr. Christopher Smalley, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, as part of EXCEL’s ongoing “Inventing Self” series of inspirational guest lectures. Smalley, who previously served as principal at Islip’s Wing Elementary School, is the author of the book “The Energy of Friends and Bullies,” illustrated by Alexandria Bouchard and independently published in December 2017. He spoke to the sixth-graders about being a writer. “I’ve run Scholastic Book fairs and worked as a roofer, carpenter and ski facility manager, and a whole bunch of other things in between,” Smalley said. “With all those experiences, the

one thing that’s remained consistent since I’ve been about 9 years old is being a writer.” “Think about what a writer really is,” Smalley asked the students. “Writers write about an event so people know what happened. Over the majority of the course of history, there was no such thing as a camera. The only way people knew what had happened was either word of mouth over time, or if someone wrote something down.” He also delved into neuroscience, noting that writing equals thinking, and discussed the differences between writing with a pen and a keyboard. “I’m very interested in the way the brain works,” Smalley said. “Just the act of holding a pen makes your brain start thinking. When you are creating a thought in your head, the

generation of the thought is different if you are typing or writing with a pen, because you can’t write as fast as you can type. What a pen does is two things: It takes longer to write something, and when you use two hands, you use two sides of your brain. When you use one hand, you use one.” Before sitting down to a read-through of his book, the assistant superintendent told the sixth-graders that books start with ideas, as his own did. Over time, Smalley had noted his own observations, gathered ideas and wrote them down in notebooks, which led to penning “The Energy of Friends and Bullies.” “I realized that I dealt a lot with bullying – where it comes from, where it starts, why it exists – and I learned a lot about friendship and what it means,” he said.

A Night of Living History History came alive on March 7 at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School as third-graders presented a Night at the Wax Museum. Prior to the big night, each student read a biography and researched a historical figure, created

a presentation board to display what they had learned about their chosen person’s life and historical significance, and wrote a speech in the voice of their subject. During the Wax Museum, the students came in costume and stood like wax figures in front

of their displays. When family or friends pushed their buttons, the students came to life and gave their speeches. “Everyone was amazed by the students’ hard work and creativity,” said Principal Janet Jones.

Warrior Ranch Foundation Helps Veterans and First Responders Suffering from PTSD through Equine Therapy. This program rehabilitates retired race horses for adoption, preventing euthanasia. As participants engage in these activities, they develop bonds, give guidance, demonstrate leadership, and help horses overcome fears. In doing so, participants experience companionship and lower stress levels while participating in activities that are proven to reduce symptoms of PTSD. The Warrior Ranch Foundation rehabilitates troubled horses, making them fit to return home or fit for adoption. In doing so, veterans are able to assist in re-purposing these horses while also helping themselves. The Warrior Ranch Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) corporation.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members, Boat Captains, Boat Maintence and Repair, Office Assistants, Building and Grounds Maintenance and Repair and Festival Booth Volunteers. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of

the school’s Parents as Reading Partners program. Principal Nicholas Bilotti read a story to a group of students in the gym, followed by smaller breakout groups reading

with teachers in their classroom and a student vote for favorite decorated door. The evening finally ended with hot chocolate and cookies in the Connetquot cafeteria.
