Ambitious Art Project

he entire fifth grade at Timber Point Elementary School recently embarked on an ambitious Art project, creating selfportrait grid enlargements in Art teacher Christina Spera’s classroom. Each student was provided with a 4x6 print of his or her school photo. After finishing their artwork, the students strengthened writing skills by filling out question sheets about what they learned.

Browsing The Archives By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last week marked another mini-milestone in my time here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 450th In Step column. I have to admit, I only realized this a few days ago while randomly perusing the archives, brainstorming for ideas, and I suppose it would stand to reason, seeing as I’m coming upon my 9th anniversary working here… but still, it seems like just yesterday that I tentatively submitted my first column for consideration, as a “trial run” of sorts. The rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the present day, as I’m in the process of

putting together a presentation for my alma mater, discussing the path I took to achieve my career aspirations, the ten years that have elapsed since being in the comfortable confines of a classroom, and all that has transpired along the way. Not that I saw it as such a clear-cut path at the time, but I suppose we rarely do when we’re in the midst of the daily madness of responsibilities and obligations and all that fun stuff. Ten years is a long time, and much has changed in the interim, to be sure; but just as much remains the same. It takes the benefit of perspective to take stock of where you’ve been, where you’re going and, perhaps most importantly,

where you’re at now. We tend to forget that part, so consumed are we by reminiscing over the good ole’ days and looking forward to the next stage. It’s funny, too, when you look back, to realize that so much is pre-planned for us while still in school, such is the structure of the academic world. But once you graduate, it’s a whole new spectrum of possibilities. It just takes some planning and preparation to maximize that potential and avoid becoming complacent. There’s no bell schedule to dictate our next move, no breakdown of semesters… just us, on our own, finding our way in the great beyond. Here’s to the next milestone!

This year, SPLIA will recognize one project and two organizations for preservation excellence on Long Island. SPLIA will also present the Howard C. Sherwood Award for exceptional achievement in Historic Preservation and the Huyler C. Held Award For Publication Excellence at a ceremony to be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27th, hosted by Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton. Receiving awards will be: • Roger Ferris + Partners LLC for design excellence in adapting the circa 1842 Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton, NY into a luxury inn and restaurant. The project combines the restoration of the main house and barn, a sympathetic new addition to the historic house, and modern new outbuildings on the site. • The Rocky Point Historical Society for its outstanding achievement

in community-based preservation and the successful acquisition of the historic Noah Hallock Homestead to be preserved and reused as a museum. • The Yaphank Historical Society for its sustained outstanding achievement of promoting historic preservation within the Yaphank Historic District through outreach, education, partnerships, and special projects for forty years. • The Howard C. Sherwood Award will be presented to Dr. Natalie Naylor for superior achievement in Historic Preservation through scholarship that advances the appreciation of Long Island History. • The Huyler C. Held Award for excellence in publication will be presented to Mac Griswold for, The Manor: Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island, a book that explores the

Preservation Excellence rich historical narrative at Shelter Island’s Sylvester Manor. As an advocate for historic environments on Long Island, the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA) works to promote the appreciation and protection of the region’s cultural heritage. To enhance public awareness and to encourage standards of excellence, the Society’s Preservation Awards Program recognizes individuals, organizations, and projects that demonstrate extraordinary achievement in the field of historic preservation on Long Island. Helping Your Garden Grow As winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well. Late winter or early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot. Clear Debris One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won’t take long, but it’s a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again. Examine The Soil

Soil plays a significant role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. Initiate Edging Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such

tools will cut deep enough so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a time-consuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing. Fight Weeds Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won’t return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. Though gardeners might not be able to start planting their gardens in late winter or early spring, they can still get outside and take steps to ensure their gardens thrive once planting season begins.

Caregiver Support Beginning on April 1st, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will be implementing a weekly caregiver telephone support group to provide caregivers with the reassurance and emotional support that they need when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease. The group will be available every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. This group is part of ADRC’s ongoing efforts to serve those on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area who care for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease.

The weekly group sessions will provide callers with coping strategies, peer and professional support, and an opportunity to express their feelings. There are 4.1 million unpaid caregivers in New York investing their time and providing $32 billion in unpaid care per year. Unfortunately, they are not getting the support that they deserve. “We are pleased to initiate this weekly telephone caregiver support group,” says Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “This provides unpaid caregivers who cannot

Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals For Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, May 10th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles and sewing machines for their 12th annual collection at King Kulllen Shopping Center 856 Middle Country Road (Rte 25) Middle Island. Pedals for Progress has received, processed and donated over 129,000 bicycles, 1,700 used sewing machines and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in 35 developing world countries. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood. Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world. A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles); that repair store then has to earn enough money selling the repaired bikes to pay for the next shipment. “We see this as one way to continue to contribute,” says Kathy Williams Ging. “As a volunteer in Peru I saw firsthand what a big difference having a bicycle or sewing machine can make in someone’s life.” Bikes should be rust free. No trikes but bikes with flat tires in need of some repair are accepted.

Counting Down To “Ivy Day” Decisions

For months, I have been anxiously awaiting March 27th. This Thursday, known as “Ivy Day,” has historically been when top tier colleges release their admissions decisions. As I am writing this, I am hours away from Ivy Day. Serving as the culmination of years of hard work, the final word from these prestigious institutions has been long awaited. If even one of the colleges that I have applied to admits me, I will have succeeded in my goal. An acceptance would serve as positive affirmation that my hard work has not gone unnoticed. However, in the likely event that I am

inundated with rejections, I know that everything will work out the way that it is meant to. I am a firm believer in God’s plan. After months of thinking, I have finally justified the idea that I do not need an Ivy League education to be successful. Not everyone who attends a great school is happy in life. Education is just an ingredient in the recipe for success. Hard work and motivation also play major roles. If everything works out the way I hope, I will be accepted. With that being said, a rejection is not condemnation. At this point, I know that I will end up where I need to

be. Everything is out of my hands, and I can only hope that the admissions officers have chosen to admit me. My father once instilled in me a great mantra. He preached the idea that, “If you can handle it, don’t worry about it; and if you can’t handle it, don’t worry about it.” I know that there is nothing I can do this late in the game to sway a decision. There is no sense in fretting. I can only hope. As I count down the minutes until Ivy Day, I will try not to think about the impending, life altering decision. Next week, I hope to share good news with you all!

The entire fifth grade at Timber Point Elementary School recently embarked on an ambitious art project, creating self-portrait grid enlargements in Art teacher Christina Spera’s classroom. Each student was provided with a 4x6 print of his or her school photo, and using math and measuring skills as well as the grid-enlargement technique, redrew larger versions on white paper, multiplying to determine how much larger to make the boxes. They then copied what was in each small box on the small photo onto the larger boxes on their big drawing paper. The fifth-graders then learned about color families, such as monochromatic, analogous and complementary colors, and chose one of them to color in their project abstractly using watercolor pencils. After finishing their artworks, the students strengthened writing skills by filling out question sheets about what they learned.

That 2006 squad was ranked No. 1 on Long Island. In individual records, Leggio has coached 82 league champions, 267 league placewinners, 71 county placewinners, 13 county champions, 13 state placewinners, six state finalists and six state champions. This year is no exception, with his team – boasting three AllState wrestlers – finishing second in New York State. “It was a pretty special year,” he said. Leggio began wrestling at age 4, eventually being named captain of the county champion Bay Shore High School wrestling team, where he graduated in 1981. He then joined the U.S. Navy, and began coaching in 1985, starting with the Bay Shore junior varsity and then East Islip’s JV two years later. A bricklayer by trade, Leggio cites one of his major accomplishments as the organization and construction of the East Islip High School wrestling

• Spread a mixture of topsoil and compost over the top of the lawn. This will add nutrients through organic matter to the lawn and create a good base for the new seed to take root. It will also help strengthen any existing grass and promote long-term health. • Test a sample of the soil to check the pH. Grass prefers a neutral pH, but some soil tends to lean toward the acidic side, especially if you see the presence of moss. Knowing the pH will help determine just how much lime per square foot you will need to adjust it accordingly.

Liming is a corrective measure and does not need to be used on a healthy, thriving lawn. • Invest in a spreader to add seed to the lawn. The spreader will have various settings that enable you to calibrate the rate of seed dispersion depending on your walking speed. Fill the spreader with seed and begin to walk around the lawn. Drop spreaders require you to apply seed in rows with no overlap. Broadcast spreaders will cast seed widely and may need some overlap to guarantee complete coverage.

• Spread another thin layer of compost mix over the seed and water thoroughly. The compost will help keep moisture in while the seeds germinate. • Aim for lawn watering two to three times per day. The seed should be barely dry between watering. After seeds have germinated and established, you can reduce the frequency of watering but increase the depth of the watering to keep roots strong. • Avoid foot traffic on a newly seeded lawn until the grass is well established.

In acknowledgment of his remarkable career, East Islip High School varsity wrestling coach Guy Leggio will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, hosted by the Friends of Long Island Wrestling, will take place on April 25th at the Melville Marriott. The longtime EI coach was nominated for the Hall by his father, fellow coach and Hall of Famer Gombatista “Jumper” Leggio. The pair will be the first father and son coaches to achieve this honor. “It’s an honor to be nominated by your own father,” said Leggio, “because he’s also in the Hall. He’s been an example for me all my life.” Leggio has been the head wrestling coach at East Islip for 25 years (he was assistant coach for two years prior), amassing a 254-106-5 record and .703 winning percentage in that

room in 2000, which he assembled volunteers to build, exemplifying his belief in giving back to the community. He also began the East Islip KID elementary wrestling program in 1994, a K-8 workshop held two nights a week at East Islip High School from November through March, teaching 80-100 young wrestlers the sport during each school year. In addition to his career as a bricklayer, Leggio has been a volunteer fireman in Bay Shore for 29 years, and serves as president of the Bay Shore Board of Education. “I have been honored to personally know Guy Leggio, and he is a gem,” said East Islip High School teacher and wrestling parent Diane Kelly. “Every athlete should experience being on a team with Leggio as the coach. He treats the players with respect while pushing them to go beyond their limits. He cares about the welfare of his wrestlers – not just on the mat, but as people. Spring Seeding Basics Spring has sprung, and there are many activities to enjoy now that the warmer weather has arrived. Many homeowners make the most of warmer weather by tackling projects around their properties. While autumn is a better time to overseed a lawn for new growth, satisfactory results still can be had if seeding is done early enough in the spring. Grass needs ample time to establish roots and grow strong before the summer heat takes its toll. Many types of grass need six to 12 weeks of ideal temperatures and growing

conditions to germinate and produce a sturdy grass that will grow and endure. Seeding can be done to rejuvenate an existing lawn and fill in bare spots. It also can be done to start a lawn from scratch. The following are some tips to help make seeding projects more successful. • Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and any fallen leaves leftover from autumn and winter. Raking also enables you to inspect the lawn for bare patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem. • Dust off the mower

and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath. • High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this problem, as it pokes holes into the soil to enable oxygenation that keeps new grass robust and promotes faster growth. Lawn aerators can be rented from many garden centers.

Fourth- and fifthgraders from two of East Islip’s elementary schools – John F. Kennedy and Timber Point – were among the participants in the 28th Annual Town of Islip Sharpshooter Basketball Contest. Sponsored since 1993 by Islip’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, along with co-sponsors Southside Hospital, the Islip Elks and the Town of Islip Housing Authority, the Sharpshooter Just Say No To Drugs Challenge, encourages children in local schools to improve their basketball skills while serving as an alternative to drug and alcohol abuse. Taking place during scheduled physical education classes, the competition allows each student the chance to

attempt to score as many baskets as possible in one minute. Participants can select designated shooting spots on the gym floor, with each spot differing in point value. A pair of first-place finishers – one boy and one girl – in each grade received custom gold medals and T-shirts and advanced to the final townwide competition against other schools’ representatives. The two runners-up were awarded silver medals and all student competitors were presented with certificates of participation. First-place winners at JFK were fifth-graders Sophia Nelson and Ryan Thompson and fourthgraders Anthony Cruz and Kristy Murphy. Finishing in second place for fifth-graders at JFK were Phoebe McCann and

Repair Your Dead Grass

A patch of dead grass on an otherwise lush lawn can be a frustrating eyesore for homeowners. Whether lawn care is your passion or just something you do to maintain the value of your home, dead grass can be exasperating. But as unsightly as dead grass can be, addressing it and restoring the dead patches can be somewhat simple. Before you can restore grass, however, you must first identify the source of the problem. Grass often dies because of urine damage, which is typically characterized by a dead spot surrounded by otherwise green grass. Grub infestation might be at fault when dead grass appears, and such an infestation often produces patches of light brown grass that are scattered throughout the lawn. It’s also possible that dead grass is a result of human error. If your lawn was overfertilized, then patches of gray-green grass may appear. Fungal disease is another common culprit behind dead grass, and such disease can manifest itself in different ways. Once you have identified why the grass is dead, which may require the help of a professional, then you can begin to treat your lawn. Urine Damage

Urine damage is often limited to a particular area of the grass where your family pet routinely relieves itself. Once a particular patch of grass has worn down, the pet may move on to another spot. But if you quickly notice a dead spot due to urine damage, you can train the animal to urinate elsewhere, limiting the damage it causes. When repairing the grass, dig a hole that’s roughly four inches deep and fill it with fresh soil until it’s level with the soil surrounding the dead patch. Then you can sprinkle seed on top of the freshly laid soil and water the spot.Grass should grow in and stay green so long as you prevent further urine damage. Insect Damage Addressing dead spots caused by insect damage can be a little more complicated, and some homeowners may prefer to hire a professional. If you want to handle the problem on your own, apply pesticide to the affected areas so the insects behind the problem are killed. Once the insects are no more, cut the grass, raking the affected area to remove the dead grass and any additional debris. Scatter grass seed over the affected areas and then apply an appropriate fertilizer

and water immediately. Professionals may know just the right fertilizer for your lawn, so even if you want to go it alone, visit a local lawn care center to ask for advice about addressing your particular problem. Fertilizer Damage Fertilizer damage can also prove difficult to address, as applying fresh seeds too soon can kill any freshly growing seedlings. So grass that has been damaged by overfertilization must first be allowed to fully die. Once that has happened, the grass can be cut and any remaining debris or dead grass can be removed. Seed can then be scattered, and you can even add some additional soil before laying down an appropriate amount of fertilizer and watering the lawn immediately. If you don’t trust yourself to use fertilizer correctly, then hire a professional to do the job for you. This will cost a little more, but you likely won’t wake up to more dead patches of grass down the road. Dead grass can be unsightly and turn an otherwise lush lawn into a patchy eyesore. But addressing dead grass can be easy and can quickly restore a lawn to its green grandeur.
