Fourth-graders’ research skills were showcased at annual science fairs by two East Islip schools, John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School, both held on March 2nd in front of proud families, friends and school staff. The projects presented were based on experiments the students conducted using the scientific method, including determining a question, developing a hypothesis, indicating the procedures that were followed, listing
the utilized materials, recording the trials and investigations that were completed, analyzing the results and finally drawing a conclusion. For JFK, the winner was Jesse Hodge for his project that examined bacteria in dog saliva, “Can a Lick Save a Life?” Other students recognized were first runner-up Abigail Lemke (“Beach Erosion”), second runner-up Gianna Trager (“Magnets”) and third runner-up Drew McCarthy (“Soil Erosion”). At RCK, Lilyana Graney
earned first place for her project “A Bird’s Color Feast,” which tested whether birds have color preferences for their bird feeders. Michael Stadelman came in second (“Emergency? Which Color LED Light Is Brightest?”), while Frank Muscarello finished third (“Paw Preference”). Hodge (representing JFK) and Graney (representing RCK) will move on to compete at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair on May 6th. “It was an exciting night of learning for all who participated and attended and there were many wonderful and educational entries,” said JFK Principal Deborah Smith. “My congratulations to the students – everyone learned a great deal about science from their hard work.” Photo courtesy of: East Islip School District

Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor
maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from
slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

County Honorees Two county employees were rewarded for going above and beyond in their duties as part of a new recognition program sponsored by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. Vincent Cordiale, systems analyst supervisor with the county’s information technology department, and Jennifer Kohn, a senior assistant county attorney, were honored with the firstever Employee Excellence
Awards at the Legislature’s March 7th General Meeting in Riverhead. Awards will be given out each General Meeting to acknowledge county employees for their hard work and contribution. “Many county employees work tremendously hard and are valuable assets to their departments, and the Employee Excellence Awards are a way for us to recognize their dedication, outstanding efforts and achievements,” said Presiding Officer Gregory.
“Conscientious, honest and hard-working, Vincent Cordiale and Jennifer Kohn have excelled in their departments, making them perfect candidates for this award. I thank them for their contribution and service to Suffolk on behalf of the citizens of Suffolk County.” Vincent Cordiale, of Rocky Point in Suffolk’s Sixth District, was nominated by IT Commissioner Scott Mastellon. Cordiale has worked with the county
for the last 20 years and is responsible for the county’s technology infrastructure. A lead designer of the county’s redundant data centers, his commitment and dedication helped the county continue to operate during Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Super Snowstorm Nemo, and he helped save $150,000 in county funding by obtaining a licensing rule exception. He has a stellar reputation for being the first employee to respond to issues in the evenings,
during the weekends, and even on holidays Jennifer Kohn, of Huntington Station in Suffolk’s 18th District, was nominated by County Attorney Dennis Brown. Now a senior assistant county attorney, she has been working in the county for nearly 30 years. The Northeastern Law School graduate is the only current employee to hold a master’s degree in environmental law. She has represented the county in various fields
such as farm preservation, planning issues and Cornell Cooperative management, and she ushered through the sale of the remediated Circutron property. She has been instrumental in drafting new code and helped coordinate the county’s response to the detection of firesuppressing chemicals at Gabreski and in Yaphank, and to dumping at West Hills County Park.

Scaling Up East Islip High School students in Hal Kench’s advanced computer-aided design course recently completed their major unit project, a scale model home. Seniors Hunter Engrassia and Joseph Mignone and junior Kiernan Stanton had completed the collegelevel introduction to CAD during the 2015-2016 school year, and decided to continue on with the subject at an advanced level. The three students
started with a complex set of blueprints, and though diligent teamwork, complex math equations and precise measurements, brought the house to life. “I’m really proud of this group,” said Kench. “They’ve come up through the CAD ranks together, and really did a fantastic job on this project.” Like all other programs in East Islip’s technology department, advanced CAD is offered at the college level, and students who successfully complete
Top 10 Honors the rigorous syllabus can earn three college credits from Suffolk County Community College. “Our partnership with SCCC in the Excelsior program is a great way for our students to get a feel for college-level courses, and earn transferable credit at a fraction of the cost,” said Kench. Engrassia is taking her engineering aspirations a step further by shadowing a local architect as part of the school’s Mentor Me program.
Three of Islip High School’s Science Olympiad teams recently participated in the annual Eastern Long Island Regional competition, with all three finishing in the top 20 overall out of 46 competing teams, and earning 21 total top 10 medals at the competition. Each team spent months preparing for 25 different science and engineering events in categories like
Forensics, Helicopters and Wind Power. The top six teams from the region automatically qualified for the state tournament. Islip’s A team came in third overall in Suffolk County, allowing its 15 students to advance to the New York State competition, which was held March 10th-11th at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. First-place finishers for Islip included seniors

The exceptional varsity team finished second overall in New York State, and was honored by Superintendent John Dolan and the board of education at the March 9th board meeting.
On the weekend of March 10th-12th, the freshman Red team participated in the CAN/ AM 2017 Challenge Cup Tournament at the Lake Placid Olympic Center, competing at both the 1980s Herb Brooks Arena as well as the 1932 Olympic Rink. The team dominated the tournament with a 5-00 record to take home the gold medal. “It was the hard work and dedication of each player that ultimately lead
to their success as a team,” said Coach Rod Parisi. “I couldn’t be more proud of these boys.” “It is amazing what a fantastic job all of these coaches do to stretch these players and bring them out of their comfort zones to highlight their abilities, which displays itself both on and off the ice,” said Joe Mayer, general manager of the East Islip Hockey Club. “It is truly teamwork that creates champions.”

Students throughout the Islip School District participate in visual arts activities with Islip’s fine and performing arts staff, culminating in an annual art show. Whether with colored pencils or paints, on paper or canvas, students are given the opportunity to both practice their artistic skills and create works of art worthy of special recognition. This year, Islip recognized 80 artists who created works that displayed both technical ability and artistic growth. The artists ranged in age from 6 to 18 years of age,
and worked in media ranging from pencil drawings to darkroom photography. Artists and their families came to participate in a recent recognition ceremony, where they could view their works and the works of others on display. “The assembled works highlighted not only artistic abilities but also valuable crosscurricular skills, including perseverance and problem solving,” said Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts. “The commitment these students make to their art will serve them beyond the
