Islip BOE Recognizes Dozens Of “Champion” Students

The Islip School District recently honored outstanding student achievements at a Night of Champions celebration during a board of education meeting. Elementary and secondary students who demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics, music and leadership received certificates honoring their accomplishments while their proud families looked on.

“We have incredible teachers who give the students the tools they need and the encouragement to succeed, but tonight what we’re doing is awarding the students that have taken that even further, that have the motivation and the drive to achieve greater things than we have set

out for them,” Director of Fine and Performing Arts

Michael Hershkowitz said.

“I’m so proud of all of you.”

Music honors, presented by Hershkowitz, began with students selected for the Long Island String Festival ensembles, from the elementary level (Emerson Cox, Titley Das, Brianne Moon and Parker Snyder),

Their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) is located right in Medford, however they have six regions across the country and serve all 50 states.

Did you know that National Puppy Day is March 23rd? Canine Companions will be celebrating with a live puppy cam from 9ammidnight, featuring eight-week-old future service dogs. You can tune in to watch this litter of very special puppies as they romp and play, eat and sleep and begin their lifechanging journeys. America’s Boating Courses Being Offered To The Public

BRIANNA’S LAW has passed and is being implemented in five annual stages that began on January 1, 2020 – depending on the age of the boat captain. All power boat operators will be required to obtain a NASBLA approved Safe Boating Certificate by January, 2025, regardless of age. So, now is the time to sign up for a Safe Boating Course to fulfill this requirement and to keep you, your friends, and family, as well as other boaters safe on our great waterways.

Don’t delay… get your certificate for the upcoming boating season! Offered by America’s Boating Club of the Great South Bay, you may register for one of these “America’s Boating Courses” on Saturday, April 15, 2023 from 9:30am to 12:30pm, April 22, 2023 from 9:30am to 12:30pm, and April 29, 2023 from 9:30am to 1:30pm. All classes will be held at the West Islip Library, 3 Higbie Lane, West

Islip, NY 11795, and is available for adults and youth who are at least a 7th Grade reading level.

The basic boating knowledge topics include:

•Safe Boating Navigation

•Boating Problems

•Trailering, Storing and Protecting Your boat

•Jet Ski Certification

Many Boat Insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course. This basic boating knowledge course will give you the education required to obtain the SAFE BOATING CERTIFICATE, which is mandatory for Jet Ski operation, regardless of your age.

Upon completing the test at the end of the three session course, you will receive your NASBLA approved Laminated United States Power Squadrons America’s

Boating Course Certificate, which is recognized nationally and never expires.

Registration for the course is required in advance of the course and subject to availabilities. The cost of the America’s Boating Course is $30., payable in advance by credit card or Pay Pal. The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy.

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www.
