Student-Artist Is NYSATA Student Of The Month

Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School student Ibrahim Shrivardhankar was selected as Student of the Month for the month of February by the New York State Art Teachers Association of Nassau and Suffolk counties. His

artwork is now exhibited at the Darcy Center for the Arts, located at the Firefly Artists Gallery in Northport, New York. The Student of the Month is an artist who exemplifies outstanding artwork and commitment to the arts, as

seen in Shrivardhankar’s rendition of a dragon eye using crayon and Sharpie. The artwork was created last school year during the study of color theory in Melissa Trocchio-Cohen’s class.

In the first round of the tournament, held at MVP Center in Albany from Feb. 25-26, 13th-seeded Regis defeated Middletown’s Rahmiere Bradley by a score of 6-2. He then beat Fox Lane’s Mark Berisha in round 2 and Lockport’s Stefaan Fearon in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Regis scored a major upset by knocking out top seed Konrad Krzyston of Frontier. In the contest for first place, Regis lost a hard-fought battle against Charlie Tibbitts of New Hartford/Saquoit Valley. The final match went to an overtime tiebreaker before Tibbits finally came out ahead, 3-2.

East Islip High School’s robotics team traveled to Freeport High School to compete in one of this year’s VEX VRC “Tipping Point” competitions, finishing in the top seven and nearly unseating two highly ranked teams in what would be their last match of the day. All year long, East Islip’s robotics students have been designing and creating competition robots in their respective Robotics I and II courses as well as in the Robotics Club. Their designs and concepts culminated in the creation of a competition robot that was ready for battle. Several group members contributed heavily to the team’s success: Team leader Zoe Elder, top driver Sebastian Gebhard, pit crew chief Louis Attard, team scout leader Anthony Ognibene and quality control expert Kaitlin McCall helped guide their team throughout the day. Additionally, members of the U.S. Army’s Bay Shore recruiting office sponsored the team’s competition shirts, and Sgt. 1st Class David Nhan and Staff Sgt.

Paws Of War Provides Long Island Veterans With Free Wellness Care Checkups For Their Service Animals

The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide

emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.   “Veterinarians enable animals of all kinds to live their best life and to be as happy and healthy as possible. Service animals are responsible for their health and well-being and in many cases the lives of their owners. Volunteering my time and medical knowledge for Paws of War and their mobile clinic is my way to honor these veterans for all they have done for our country,” said Dr. Altieri. Rohan Murphy Pays Annual Inspirational Visit Continuing an annual tradition, East Islip Middle School’s wrestlers were paid a visit by one of East Islip’s most beloved alumni, the acclaimed wrestler, powerlifter and motivational speaker Rohan Murphy. Born with severe birth defects that resulted in the amputation of his legs at age four, Murphy persevered with

athletics at East Islip, Penn State and beyond, becoming a success story and inspiration for all. “Rohan comes back every year to speak with our wrestlers, and it’s always our favorite practice of the year,” said physical education teacher Ron Croteau, who was instrumental in convincing Murphy to try

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of ﬁve communities and school districts

Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

Liam Godbout Named HOBY Winner

East Islip High School sophomore Liam Godbout has been named the winner of the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award, honoring exceptional leadership and community service. He will represent East Islip at this year’s HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar conference, to be held in June.

HOBY is an annual leadership seminar open to sophomore students across America, providing more than 12,000 students the opportunity to engage in leadership development activities and seminars around the country. 11th Annual All Kids Fair Is Back At A New Exciting Venue The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer. Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Kitty Chung raved, “You organized a

wonderful event for families. We will be glad to return to have more fun!” Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booth, and cotton candy, all included with admission. Jennifer Keegan of Your Local Kids Source, a multiyear sponsor and exhibitor, previously shared that she “had a great time at the All Kids Fair meeting tons of Long Island parents and enjoying all the smiling faces on all the happy kids.” This fun-filled event offers exciting educational and leisure activities to interest kids and their families each year. The Fair has choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. There will be information about places to play, camps, after-school activities, birthday party

providers, and college planning. A charity drive to benefit The Book Fairies, a 501c3 that provides books to those in need, will return this year. Those who donate gently used or new books or money will receive raffle tickets to win great donated prizes.
