is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Located at 286 Middle Island Rd in Medford, the Long Island Chapter works to raise awareness, recruit new puppy raisers and volunteers and support one another’s work on behalf of the Canine Companions’ mission. This Chapter is a lively network filled with opportunities for social engagement from puppy classes to fundraisers. Beyond the satisfaction of doing good work for Canine Companions, lifelong friendships are often formed among chapter members.

The benefits of having a service dog can be indescribable, often life-changing.

Canine Companions provides dogs for an array of disabilities; they o er service dogs for adults, children and veterans with a physical or auditory disability or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education settings. The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year.

In recent years, Yucca, a Facility Dog, became a new furry member of the Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead, NY (placed by Canine Companions). She helps students learn responsibility, come out of their shell and even helps those that experience issues at home, such as past traumas or emotional/social issues.

“Having a dog there to just talk to or pet can really help the children,” explained teacher Emilee Raynor. “Yucca loves our

students and they know she is not judging them, so they take more risks when working with her than with their peers.”

Yucca is incorporated into daily lessons, such as language practice, when students read to her and describe the commands Yucca is following. “I have already seen the huge impact that Facility Dog Yucca has made in the classroom. Students are so excited to come to class. They work hard for Yucca and understand their responsibilities.”

Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love.

Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

Islip’s Bucs Win Wrestling League Championship

Islip High School’s varsity wrestling team captured the League VI Tournament championship on Feb. 4, held at Kings Park Middle School. The contest was highlighted by outstanding performances by four individual first-place

winners: Cody Costello (189 lbs.), Kevin Horner (102 lbs.), Juan Pantaleon (285 lbs.) and Jared Spahn (138 lbs.). Fourteen Islip wrestlers also qualified for the Suffolk County Wrestling Championships and represented Islip at

the tournament on Feb. 13 and 14.

“Congratulations to our coaches, wrestlers and parents on a great season and wrestling an amazing tournament,” Athletic Director John Sparacio said.

Recognizes Ancient Order Of Hibernians

Division 7 Honorees

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized the 2023 Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Division 7 honorees, Thomas Joseph McHugh and Ladies (LAOH), Division 7 Aide Patricia Alice Fitzpatrick for the Annual John P. Reilly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Dinner/Sashing of Grand Marshals at Irish Coffee Pub in Islip.

Mr. McHugh became a member of the AOH, Division 7, in 1993, joining the Division board with his cousin, past president and 2020 Grand Marshal, Tom Davis in 2006. He has held every officer position, serving through his presidency in 2021, leading a membership

expansion of the AOH despite a challenging pandemic and he is still active on the board as Immediate Past President. He joined the Roisin Dubh Pipe Band Color Guard in 2008, recently succeeding George Broschart as the Color Guard Captain while chairing the band’s largest annual fundraiser, the Skip McCormick Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, for 14 years. In addition, he became editor of the Division 7 newsletter in September 2011 and engineered a transition to the electronic format. He was also recognized as Hibernian of the Year in 2018.

Ms. Fitzpatrick’s family has also had a long history

with the Hibernians with her dad as the Founding President of the East Islip Our Lady of Knock Division 7, her uncles, Jimmy Walsh and Albert Carney were Charter members, and her mom became a Charter member of the Ladies Division, serving as President from 1969-1970. In 1972-1973, Patty served as the first Division 7 Junior Girls President and on the Hospitality Team and the office of Treasurer. She has also served as Recording Secretary, Vice President and is currently President. She played an essential part in creating the Irish Heritage Room at the East Islip Public Library.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE RESOURCE CENTER 2023 Memory Walk And Spring Festival

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) will host its Annual Memory Walk and Spring Festival at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, 451 Unqua Road, Massapequa, NY on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The walk will begin with registration at 8:30 am, a light breakfast, and opening ceremony. The Memory Walk and Spring Festival is being held on Earth Day and will have activities celebrating the planet as well as a Memory Tree to honor loved ones, archery activities, music, photos, food, beverages and more! In addition, many other community organizations are joining us and will be sharing resources with participants. This is an event you do not want to miss.

Each year, the

Memory Walk serves to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, honor and remember those impacted by the disease, and raise funds for ADRC to continue to provide support and services to families on Long Island. All funds raised stay on Long Island and are put right back into serving local families impacted by the disease.

It is $25 per person to participate and Children 12 and under are FREE. Consider creating a Team and having friends and colleagues join you in raising funds and awareness. Long-Time Islip Resident Recognized For Keep Islip Clean Honor

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Kay Erwood, Keep Islip Clean (KIC) Chairman Emeritus (one of the founding members) and Islip Commissioner, at their General Meeting in the Ballroom of Brookwood Hall in East Islip. Ms. Erwood has remained actively involved since KIC’s founding in 1989. She organized KIC’s inaugural Earth Day cleanup, which continues to this day as the upcoming 34th Annual Brook Street Wetlands Cleanup. One of her proudest achievements is the establishment of the Islip Middle School KIC Club. As students graduated Middle School, their interest continued and so the Islip High School KIC Club was established. Ms. Erwood mentored an Islip Middle School KIC Club student, who is now the current Chairman of Keep Islip

Clean. Another achievement was her work saving Islip Beach from development more than 20 years ago. She has also been involved

in the yearly beautification at the Beach, including the planting of 2,000 daffodil bulbs at the flag circle, pavilion and entry.
