Suffolk County Community College head baseball Coach Eric Brown of Coram has been inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, College Athletic Director Kevin Foley announced recently. The NJCAA made the formal announcement February 3rd. Brown will be honored at a pretournament banquet at the 2014 NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series on May 23rd in Grand Junction, Colorado. Coach Brown, Foley said, is the longest tenured coach of any athletic program at Suffolk County Community College and has led the Sharks for 25 years, amassing an overall record of 587322-7. Coach Brown has led Suffolk to five appearances in the NJCAA Division III World Series (1998, 1999, 2000,

2006, and 2011) and is a five-time recipient of the Region 15 / District F Coach of the Year Award. “Coach Brown is an exceptional leader who sets a high bar for our student athletes not only on the field, but in the players’ everyday lives. He is a credit to our College, and I am proud to say congratulations to him on behalf of our entire College community,” said Suffolk County Community President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “This is a fitting acknowledgement of the outstanding record that Coach Brown has achieved as head baseball coach at Suffolk County Community College. His contribution to the College and the young men who have played for him is legendary. He is an example of how one person can make a difference in so many people’s lives. I have known Eric for more than 30 years and he is truly

an outstanding person and one who deserves this recognition. A multisport star himself, Brown lettered in three sports – including baseball – as a student-athlete at Suffolk. He was hired to the lead Suffolk’s Baseball program in 1987 and was subsequently inducted into the Suffolk County Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 1993,” said Kevin Foley, Director of Athletics for Suffolk County Community College. Brown is a member of the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame and the Longwood High School

Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to his program’s success on the field, the NJCAA Region 15 Umpires Association has awarded Coach Brown’s program its annual sportsmanship award four times. Brown is currently the president of the NJCAA Region 15 Baseball Coaches Association, a post he has held since 2000. Other inductees this year include Steve Ruzich of South Suburban (Ill.) and Tim Wallace of Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.).

Grant Campus’ Speech and Debate team for taking home a collective seven trophies at the 2014 New England Forensics Championship at Suffolk University in Boston on February 8th. Ride for Life, an organization dedicated to fighting ALS, has announced that it will honor St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and Gail Lamberta, Ph.D., associate academic dean and chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at SJC in the Education category at its Annual Ride for Life Kick-Off Fundraiser on Thursday, March 20th, at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. Established in 1998, Ride for Life is a 150-mile wheelchair and scooter ride from Montauk to Manhattan to benefit those affected by ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Each year, Ride for Life, led by patient and advocate Chris Pendergast, has stopped at SJC on its trek across Long Island where the College’s Recreation Club has provided the

riders with lunch and, in certain instances, monetary donations. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing SJC’s support of Ride for Life,” said Dr. Lamberta. “I was introduced to Chris Pendergast through a dear friend more than 20 years ago and have always admired his dedication, commitment and courage. Chris is a remarkable

human being and has touched so many lives throughout his journey as an educator and with Ride for Life.” This year’s Ride for Life event will begin on Monday, May 5th, with a brief stop on the way at SJC’s Long Island Campus on Wednesday, May 7th. Flashback To Today By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the flashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.

As we wave goodbye to winter, it is easy to forget that there are people out there without a home, food or even shoes. The homeless are at an exponential disadvantage when it comes to adverse weather. We often complain about the trials of winter, but do we really have it so bad? Just having a house to go back to at the end of the day is an asset that we all take for granted. Many people don’t have heat. There is no relief at the end of an afternoon commute. Sure, they have no driveway to shovel, but they also

end up sleeping on the streets in the middle of a snowstorm. A few weeks ago, I took part in a Midnight Run. We went to the city and gave out bags of clothes to those who needed them the most. They were eternally grateful for our contributions. One man even tried to give us a thank you gift. Despite the fact that they have so little, the homeless people that we met proved to be some of the most generous. Even though some people regard them as “bums,” the homeless are fighting an uphill battle each and every

day. If one thinks living on minimum wage is tough, try surviving on change. Although I have no firsthand experience in the realm of the homeless, I can imagine just how hard it may be. People can be intolerant of the homeless. They wave them away when all they ask for is change. There is no daily salvation for this group of people that are trying so dearly just to make it. Before you curse the weather while waiting for your car to heat up, remember the men and women who are sleeping in the snow.

Suffolk County United Veterans received a visit from the Long Island Cares Veterans Project Mobile Outreach Unit, loaded with over 300 pounds of fresh produce and 500 pounds plus of personal care and paper product items, all for Veterans and their family members in need. For the third consecutive year, members of the Islip High School Junior Chamber of Commerce organized a fundraiser that helped collect new and gently used jeans as part of Aéropostale and dosomething.org’s Teens for Jeans campaign. Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million

free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free

credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

East Islip graduate (2001), champion wrestler, motivational speaker and double-leg amputee Rohan Murphy recently spoke with students at JFK Middle School in Bethpage. Students were inspired by Rohan’s athleticism and positive attitude, despite the fact that he had both legs amputated at the age of 4. “No one ever made fun of me, or bullied me when I was in school,”

Rohan said. “But I wanted to overcome my disability and be something great.” He explained how a middle school gym teacher helped to change his life forever by introducing him to the sport of wrestling. “I never quit and I was always willing to work harder than anyone else and take a challenge.” He told students how he worked hard to perfect his wrestling skills and

eventually went on to compete at Penn State. Rohan demonstrated some of his moves for students and illustrated how despite his lack of legs, he could run laps and stay in shape with his teammates. He left students with the words, his motto, “No excuses… anything is possible. If I was able to succeed in life without any legs, why can’t you succeed?”

Professor Of Prose

Stony Brook University’s Andrew Flescher, PhD, was awarded first place by the American Association of Publishers (AAP) with a Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Award for his book, Moral Evil, in the publishing category of Theology and Religious Studies. Dr. Flescher is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Preventive Medicine and English, and he is a member of the Core Faculty in the Program in Public Health at Stony Brook Medicine. The AAP’s annual awards program, established in 1976, recognizes the very best in professional and scholarly publishing in more than 40 categories. The PROSE Award entries are judged by peer publishers, librarians, and medical professionals. “I’m stunned to receive this award for my book,

which in essence about the subtle but far reaching consequences of human inaction,” said Dr. Flescher. “I am deeply grateful for all of the insightful people at Stony Brook and elsewhere with whom I conferred over the last four years about the topic and those who helped me to refine my thinking at every stage of the project.” In the acknowledgements section of his book, Dr. Flescher explains that the book is a result of exploring the nature of evil over the past decade with students and colleagues. “Rather than asking about its quantitative reduction or qualitative reinterpretation, I am interested in what we do with the fact of evil. What is a morally constructive model for dealing with the problem of evil? What are the best resources within our religious and moral traditions for thinking about evil in a manner conducive to human flourishing? Whence the motivation for another book about evil,” writes Dr. Flescher in the book’s introduction. Dr. Flescher uses four models to help the reader understand the concepts of moral evil: the presence

of badness, the presence of goodness, the absence of badness, and the absence of goodness, which he explores in the first four chapters. In the fifth and final chapter, Dr. Flescher explores evil as inaction and the achievement of moral betterment to help overcome evil. In a review of Dr. Flescher’s book, Diana Fritz Cates, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Religious Studies at the University of Iowa wrote, “What is moral evil, and why do people so often fall into its clutches? Flescher’s analysis is penetrating and ethically unflinching. At the same time, it reflects great compassion. This book ought to be read by everyone who longs for goodness and is pained by its absence.” Dr. Flescher has written two other books, Heroes, Saints, and Ordinary Morality and The Altruistic Species: Scientific, Philosophical, and Religious Perspectives of Human Benevolence.

(NAPSI)—Teens are more optimistic about their financial future but may depend longer on their parents, according to a major new survey. Teens also expressed concern over paying for higher education. Among the Teens and Personal Finance Survey’s key findings, conducted by Junior Achievement USA® and The Allstate Foundation: • More than half of teens think students are borrowing too much to pay for college, yet only 9 percent report they are currently saving money for college. • Nearly 30 percent have not talked with their parents about paying for college. • Nearly one in three Catch Your Dreams The future belongs to teens thinks he or she will those who believe in the be 25 to 27 years old before becoming financially beauty of their dreams. It is interesting to see this shift in teens thinking they will remain financially dependent

on their parents,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and chief executive officer of Junior Achievement USA. Since 2005, the organization, in partnership with The Allstate Foundation, has helped more than 1.2 million students set personal goals about money and make wise financial choices. The program, JA Economics for Success®, also empowers students to develop, plan and set goals to help protect themselves from unexpected financial pitfalls. According to Don Civgin, president and chief executive officer of Allstate Financial, there is an urgent need for parents and children to broach the subject. “Parents continue to be the No. 1 influence on teens when it comes to money,” he said, “so there is tremendous opportunity for family conversation.”
