Capitalizing A few days ago, I had a major Business Statistics exam. Due to the fact that my grade is entirely composed of three exams, I put a lot of effort in. Even after studying for hours, I still wasn’t mastering the material. I couldn’t think of any more resources to expend in order to boost my grade. Then I remembered the Math Resource Learning Center. The MLRC is just one of many educational assets that Villanova can boast. The chance to use the MLRC is an opportunity that most students take advantage of. Why not? It’s a very helpful tutoring service, provided free of charge to any Villanova Undergraduate. When paired with the Writing Center, the MLRC has the potential to bring you up to speed, and ensure that you are ready for whatever assignment - or exam - is headed your way. Even though I’m only in my first year as a student here, I like to think that I have a grasp on the opportunities
Villanova offers and the way most students choose to utilize those opportunities. For any student, the journey for a wholesome college experience starts with academics. After all, that is the reason people go to college. It makes sense to take advantage of the many benefits Villanova - or any college - can provide. Additionally, joining clubs or athletic teams can also enrich a college experience. I’m in the Business Leadership Society, among other clubs. This society is a hybrid. It’s a club, but also an academic fraternity. It really sparked my interest at the Club Fair, so I decided to join. The most important piece of advice that I can give any prospective college student would be to take full advantage of the opportunities and undertakings that will become available. As a first year college student, the lessons I’ve learned thus far have been invaluable. I wouldn’t trade my experience at Villanova for the world.

Puppets In Public Fourth-grade students at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School recently held a biographical puppet show as part of their curriculum studies in nonfiction reading. Each student chose a person he or she was interested in, read a book on that person and then
completed a biography book report on the person. In the culminating activity, fourth-graders constructed puppets out of craft materials and wrote first-person oral reports, presented at a special show attended by parents. “This was an opportunity for children to learn about
a famous person and then practice public speaking without having to be the face and stand in front of an audience,” said teacher Joan Munson. “All the children in the class enjoyed presenting with their puppets.”

Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t. Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or
you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult
immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

Upon completion of their speeches, they reverted back to wax figures until the next visitor pressed their buttons. “This was our first year doing this,” said teacher Jennifer Beebe. “The parents really enjoyed the opportunity to come in and see the students’ hard work, and the students loved seeing each other dressed in costume and learning from their peers.”

SHARPSHOOTERS - On February 21st, the Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs, along with its co-sponsors, Southside Hospital - a member of the North Shore LIJ-Health System - the Islip Elks, & the Town of Islip Housing Authority, held its 28th Annual “Just Say NO” Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest. The “Just Say NO” Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest has been held in the spirit of friendly competition, highlighting what people can accomplish when they say “NO” to the detrimental effects of drugs and alcohol. This year, over 8,000 fourth and fifth grade boys & girls participated in the contest, which is held in conjunction with the elementary schools in the Town of Islip.
A nine-member legislative advocacy delegation from Islip School District – including Superintendent Susan Schnebel, Board of Education trustees Catherine M. Romano and Dave Twomey, Islip Middle School Assistant Principal Jim Cameron, teachers Eric Holdsworth and Rahanna Schmalacker and community members Paul Austin, Matthew Clareen and Kristen Piazzola – attended the Longwood Legislation Breakfast held at Longwood Middle School on February 7th.
A total of 29 school districts participated along with three New York State senators, seven assemblymen and a federal congressman. District representatives met with the 11 legislators to share perspectives and discuss challenges with regard to the budget proposal and legislative mandate released in late January by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Issues addressed by the legislators included the repeal of the Gap Elimination Adjustment, education reforms to teacher and principal

evaluations, building aid calculations, education tax credits and vouchers, tax levy issues, mandate relief, charter schools, testing mandates, the opt-out movement, Elementary and Secondary Education Act reauthorization and emergency funding to support the influx of unaccompanied minors within local schools. Recently elected U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin outlined his recent support for ESEA flexibility through the Student Success Act proposed by Rep. John Kline on Minnesota.
Applications for the 9th annual Polish American Museum Founders Scholarship are now available. The $500 Scholarship is offered to high school students of Polish heritage residing in Nassau or Suffolk County, and a citizen of the United States. The student must be entering college in the Fall 2015.
The Scholarship was established on the occasion of the museum’s 30th anniversary in honor of is founding members, Chester Wrobel, Julian Jurus, and Doctor Raymond Adamczak. Last year’s recipient of the Founders Scholarship is attending Columbia University pursuing a career

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that the election of one (1) member of the Board of Trustees of the East Islip Public Library will be held at the same time and place. One (1) Trustee will be elected for a full five (5) year term of July 1st, 2015 through June 30th, 2020, the last incumbent of said position is Joseph J. Montuori, Jr.
who have presented themselves personally for registration in accordance herewith, and all persons who shall have voted at any Annual Meeting or Election, held or conducted at any time within four (4) years prior to the preparation of the register. In addition, any qualified voter of the School District whose name appears on the County of Suffolk voter registration list or portion of such list as transmitted to the Library by the Suffolk County Board of Election officials prior to the Special District Meeting and Election shall also be entitled to vote.
Budget may be made at the office of the District Clerk of the East Islip Union Free School District. Such application must be received by the District Clerk at least seven (7) days before the day of the vote, if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or by the day before the day of the vote if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. A list of all persons to whom absentee ballots shall have been issued will be available in the office of the School District Clerk on each of the five (5) days prior to the day of the vote except Saturday and Sunday. No absentee voter’s ballot shall be canvassed, unless it shall have been received in the office of the Clerk of the School District by 5:00 p.m. on the date of the election.
