Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized America’s Boating Club of the Great South Bay’s Outgoing Commander John P. Pergola, AP, of Patchogue, a member since 2010, at the Annual Change of Watch Ceremony at the Ancient Order of Hibernians, East Islip. A unit of The United States Power Squadrons, promoting safe boating through education, John P. Pergola has been very active in many phases of Squadron work. He completed Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting and Engine Maintenance in 2011. In June, 2013, he received the Educational Proficiency Award and went on to complete his Officer Training in 2014. In addition, he served as Co-op Charting Chairman from 2014-2016 and has been a member of the Executive Committee for the past three years. He also served on numerous committees during his tenure, receiving the Skipper and Pilot Awards and serving as Tent Captain and a member of the Nominating Committee.

YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-proﬁt organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Available to anyone. Early Intervention Project: This program offers prevention and early intervention services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. School-Based Services: YES Community Counseling Center provides Social

Work services to elementary school aged students in various school districts. WISH Program: Women In Shared Healing (WISH) provides comprehensive services for community members who have been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused, as well as those effected by or witness to domestic violence. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Prevention Services: These services are provided to youth, families, parents and community groups and are designed to reduce individual, family and community level risk factors and increase protective factors. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Parenting Programs: Various programs are offered to assist parents/guardians in raising children. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. YES CCC provides a ﬁnancial literacy program called Commerce Plaza to students throughout Long Island at their Levittown location. This unique program immerses students in a simulated business community with hands-on experience by assigning them roles and tasks that replicate actual work experience. Students learn about leadership, budgeting, operating a business, banking skills, and teamwork. Since opening in May 2000, Commerce Plaza has hosted over 69,000 students from school districts on Long Island. Available to students in both Suffolk County and Nassau County.

Project9line To Offer New Free Stand-Up Comedy & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes Project9line, a nonprofit organization with the mission to empower veterans with reintegration through the arts and activities. They offer free art and wellness programs to veterans and their families at their headquarters, which is located at 25 Union Ave, Islip, NY 11751. They are currently offering the following: Community Mondays at 7:00PM

Beginning on March 16th, Project9line will offer a brand-new Stand-Up Comedy Class. The class will be on Wednesdays at 7:00PM and will run for 8 weeks. Taught by the non-profit’s Program Director, Tugboat Manny, all participants will learn the fine art of stand-up comedy and be able to take part in a showcase (more Yoga: information to come).

Flu Season Is Underway In New York; How You Can Protect Residents Who Are Most Vulnerable Flu season is officially here in New York, with the New York State Department of Health reporting ten consecutive weeks of widespread flu diagnoses. To help prevent the flu in people who are at high risk for severe complications, the American Lung Association and Empire BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, released a toolkit specifically for caregivers of adults 65 and over through their “Fend Off Flu” campaign. Influenza (flu) is a serious and highly contagious disease that can have severe health consequences for all, and

especially for vulnerable adults 65 and older, and those with chronic health conditions. The new toolkit is a resource to educate caregivers including healthcare providers and personnel in long-term care settings about the flu and the importance of vaccination to protect adults 65 and older. “Nationally, 50-70% of flu hospitalizations were in patients over 65. Flu shots are especially important for healthcare workers and caregivers of vulnerable adults,” said David Ackman, M.D., Medicaid Medical Director from Empire BlueCross BlueShield.

“Not only will getting a flu shot help reduce the chance of catching the illness, but it will also help reduce the severity if it’s contracted. Especially for people with underlying health conditions, the flu can turn into a serious, even deadly, illness.” During the 2019 – 2020 flu season, it is estimated the flu sent approximately 380,000 people to the hospital with related complications and caused an estimated 20,000 deaths in the United States, which is why getting vaccinated should be a priority. The flu vaccine is the best protection against

contracting and spreading the illness. “Especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, routine vaccination is more important than ever,” said Erica Masin, executive director for the American Lung Association in metro New York. “Flu vaccinations have been in use for more than 50 years, with hundreds of millions of Americans safely receiving them. It’s recommended that everyone over six months of age receive a flu vaccine, but they are especially important for the 3,026,000 people in New York with

lung disease, as well as their family members and caregivers.” In addition to vaccination, the CDC recommends these everyday preventive actions. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or your elbow. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. The “Caregiver Flu Toolkit” is a comprehensive guide to educate caregivers of adults 65 and over about
