The Healthy, Safe and Strong group exercise program is an introduction to safe exercises available for adults age 60 and older in the province of Ontario. The program can help develop better stamina, maintain or improve balance and increase strength and endurance. StrongerU Senior Fitness is a relatively new program of pre-choreographed group fitness offering instruction in four program types: cardio, strength training, stretching, and circuit training. The program addresses a need in Canada for quality and consistent senior fitness programing. As studies show that engaging in physical activity is the most effective way for aging men and women to stay healthy, more adults may be compelled to join fitness groups that cater to the 50-and-over market.

This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

Hall of Fame High School Recognition Program is designed to identify Long Island High School music programs that are creating valuable music experiences for their students and

Dance Connection of Islip presented their 4th Annual Making Wishes Grow, a performance benefit to assist Make-AWish of Suffolk County, NY in granting the wishes of local children. The performance at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville on Sunday, January 19th raised money that will help to grant the wish of Katherine, a 16-year-old Islip Town resident whose wish is to go to Disney World with her family. The performance featured Create Dance Center, the Dance Connection

Performance Team, JAM Dance & Fitness, Trinity Dance Company, and comedy by Kyle Kratzke. All net proceeds will be donated to Make-A-Wish of Suffolk County. “This performance never fails to leave both our audience and our performers with a smile, and our dancers are able to get a sense of how their love of dance can help to enrich the lives of others and to give back to the community that they live in. It’s a fantastic experience for everyone involved and we are so grateful for all the

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is participating in Long Island Cares’ ninth annual Legislative Food Drive Challenge to collect pet food for the clients of Long Island Cares. Since 2009, Long Island Cares has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need, in an effort to enable them to keep their pets at home instead of placing them in shelters.

Legislator Trotta pointed out that, according to Long Island Cares, dog and cat food are the most requested items by their member agencies. “Pets keep many people going, giving them comfort and a reason to survive in difficult times so I am asking the kind and generous residents and pet lovers in my district to help out. Last year we collected over 1,000 pounds of pet food,” said Legislator Trotta. “

The pet pantry is in need of canned and dry cat/ dog food, cat/dog treats, birdseed, and food for fish, rabbits, and ferrets, as well as kitty litter and small new toys. The drive is from now until April 1. Donations may be dropped off, Monday through Friday, from 9am - 4pm, at Legislator Trotta’s office, 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, Smithtown. ISLIP WEARS RED FOR WOMEN’S HEART HEALTH - Town of Islip employees joined Go Red for Women Friday, wearing red to raise awareness and uncover the truth about heart disease in women. Go Red for Women gives women a fighting chance against heart disease, by helping them understand their common killer. More women than men have died from cardiovascular disease since 1984. More women die from heart disease than from the next three causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Sixty four percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms, and many of those women had at least one risk factor that could have been prevented. “Women are often caregivers to others, but neglect their own health,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I urge all women to visit GoRedForWomen.org and learn the important facts about cardiovascular disease in women,” she said.

The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind’s muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book. According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www. thehealthy.com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood ﬂowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive

and executive function. When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent. Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical. Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable. Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science. Picking up a good book also can help a person gain knowledge of new cultures, ideas and history and even improve vocabulary. Picking up a newspaper or magazine, joining a book club or reading with children are just a few of the many ways to improve the mind through reading.

a closing artists’ reception and awards presentation on March 1. “These extremely talented students are four of the most hardworking and committed artists I’ve ever met,” Figliozzi said. “Each has a unique vision and demonstrates a variety of strong technical abilities in their chosen craft, and I have no doubt they will all pursue creative pathways in their future. I’m excited for them to exhibit with some of the most talented student-artists on Long Island and proud to see

them showcase their work to a larger community.” Cornell plans to attend Alfred University’s School of Art and Design this fall. She has been awarded their highest merit scholarship, the Art Portfolio Scholarship, a renewable award of $14,000 for up to four years, and was also recognized as a Miller Portfolio Scholar, a $5,000 annual award recognizing an elite group of talented artists. Hailee will begin Alfred’s intense Foundations program this fall, which will allow her

to broaden her already successful art practice. Cornell’s Go APE piece, “Peanut Butter and Caramel,” is a photorealistic colored pencil drawing, part of a body of artwork that showcases traditionally executed portraits that have been obstructed by various textures and materials. Huss is a skilled illustrator, character designer, draftswoman, sculptor and painter. She plans to work for her uncle’s Los Angeles production company, Molecule Productions, after graduation, using her multiple creative talents to help with set design, fashion and make-up for a horror movie he is producing. “Release II,” her Go APE selection, is a large-scale mixed media piece that explores tension and release through selfportraiture. Montijo has shown a strong sense of design and the ability to master any medium. As a junior, she explored digital manipulation

of nature photography in AP 2D Design. This year, she has delved into various traditional and unconventional painting techniques, including making her own natural pigments. Montijo is creating sustainable architecture structures for her AP Drawing exam this year, using a variety of reclaimed and recycled materials. She plans to pursue architecture next year at the New York Institute of Technology and has received a $25,000 annual merit award. Full of rich color and expressive marks, Montijo’s selfportrait featured in Go APE displays her confidence

in exploring new painting techniques. An accomplished illustrator, cartoonist and animator, Neville plans to enroll in the animation program at New York City’s School of Visual Arts this fall, where she can pursue her passion for character design and animation. Her Go APE artwork, the acrylic painted illustration “Sailing in the Clouds,” depicts a daydreaming young girl ﬂoating over the light of the moon. Vibrant in color and whimsically rendered, it demonstrates Neville’s ability to create imaginative environments and worlds to explore.

Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.
