All proceeds will benefit the Elizabeth Durante Medical Clinic and Orphanage in a remote part of Uganda. There will be

The Clinic provides free healthcare and surgery for women and children who otherwise would have no access to these medical services. The Orphanage supplies housing to 300 children. on her way to Uganda in March of 2009 when she was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Celebrity Chef Event In celebration of 35 years of service to the community in providing diabetes education and support to individuals with diabetes and their families, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Diabetes Education Center will host an interactive night of food, fun and fine dining with Celebrity Chef Tom Schaudel. The event, which will feature a cooking demonstration along with

a delicious three-course meal, will take place on Monday, March 10th, at 6:30 p.m. at Jewel, located in The Atrium Room, at 400 Broadhollow Rd. in Melville. “Thirty-five years of service to our community is certainly a momentous milestone for Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center,” said Lynne Chimon, MS, RD, BCADM, CDN, CDE, Director

Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. NATIONAL ACHIEVER - Islip High School senior Budie Kadir has been recognized as a finalist in the 2014 National Achievement Program. Debate Team Tops

The East Islip Middle School Student Government and adviser Dawn Zeffiro hosted the Hoops for the Troops Charity Basketball Tournament on January 17th. More than 130 students participated in the event, which supported the school’s Builders Club’s ongoing efforts to provide weekly care packages for overseas members of the U.S. armed forces. The entrance fee was one item to send to the troops, and more than 500 items were collected for the donation boxes.

Assemblyman Joseph Saladino kicked off the evening by introducing three U.S. Marine Corps veterans – Ciro Chicarelli, Larry Gruttemeyer and Carmine Raineri – from the American Legion Hall in Babylon and Marine Corps Detachment League in Bay Shore. Middle school basketball coach and teacher Chris Padgur acted as master of ceremonies. “The event was a huge success thanks to Chris,” said Zeffiro. “He worked tirelessly with the student government to plan everything.” Christopher Siatta, a

student at East Islip High School, served as a guest DJ throughout the evening, playing motivational songs and narrating the basketball plays. “Chris donated his time and talent to make the event even more enjoyable,” said Zeffiro. Going The Distance

The Suffolk County Community College Michael J. Grant Campus Speech and Debate Team took home seven trophies at the 2014 New England Forensics Championship at Boston’s Suffolk University last week and four team members qualified for the national tournament later this year. Suffolk topped Emerson College and Bridgewater College for the third place overall team title. Debate Team VicePresident Nick Alleyne took first in Informative Speech and third in the Impromptu category, which earned him a spot at the national championships in both categories. Felipe A. Espitia Cetina placed

second in Impromptu and will also be heading to the national event. Cetina is also a Suffolk County Community College Student Trustee. Amanda Koscik, public relations officer, placed first in the Prose category, while teammates President Jacqueline Pusey placed fifth and Treasurer Amanda Yodice, fourth; Secretary Nicholas Krauss - in his first forensics tournament - drew third, and Faseeha Naeem, secured the top spot, and a first place trophy. Krauss and Naeem will compete at the national championship in the Persuasive category. Jaqueline Pusey is making a repeat appearance at the national championships,

this time in the Persuasive category after appearing last fall in the Dramatic Interpretation slot. Assistant Professor of Communications and Faculty Advisor Christopher Holfester said, the Michael J. Grant Campus Speech and Debate Team has won three national championships and twice won the New York State Championship since 1999 and former team members are now college professors and attorneys. The team will compete again on February 22nd and 23rd, at the Emerson/Lafayette Swing at Emerson College in Boston.

During his running career as a Buccaneer, Michael has been named All-Eastern, All-State, AllDivision and has been a national qualifier in track and field. He is the first runner in the seven-year history of the Islip winter track team to qualify for states.

“Michael is a quality student and athlete,” said cross-country coach Marc Rosado. “He is a very dedicated runner and deserves this honor for all of the work and mileage he has put in over the years.” Track and field coach Ted Blanchard added, “This is the culmination of years of training. Michael is enthusiastic and focused and absolutely deserves this honor.”
