The 59th Annual John P. Reilly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held in East Islip on Sunday, March 3, 2024. The parade commences at 2:00 pm starting at the East Islip Public Library and ends on Irish Lane. This year’s parade will feature over ten pipe bands, floats, high school marching bands, local fire departments, and an array of members from local community organizations. The Local Hibernians Inc.

is happy to announce that this year’s Grand Marshal will be past AOH Division President, Shawn O’Neill, and the Ladies Aide is LAOH member Mary Phalen. Shawn’s aides will be his four children, Shawn, Jr, Thomas, Colleen and Molly. Shawn and his aides will lead the renowned Rosin Dubh Pipe Band when they head down Main Street. Shawn is a 1980 East Islip graduate and a longtime East Islip resident.

Shawn has been a member of Division 7 AOH for almost 30 years. Along with his wife Sue, former Suffolk County LAOH President, the family has gone above and beyond participation at various AOH division 7 events and helped coordinate the running of the division for 30 years holding many County and

Division positions. Shawn was in the Color Guard with the Roisin Dubh Pipe Band and then played snare and bass drum. He has also served as Finance Chairman, assisted in the Community Children Christmas Party and is currently the President of the Local Hibernians Inc. and was a Past Hibernian of

the Year. The ladies’ honoree, Mary Phalen, has been an active member of the Ladies AOH since 1993 and has also been a member of the Celtic Degree Team. She has also been active in St. Mary’s Parish as a Eucharistic Minister and in the St. Mary’s Rosary Altar Society. She is also a member of the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary in East Islip and the East Islip Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Over the years, Mary has

supported many community organizations along with her husband Bernie and their three children Kenneth, Kathleen and Maryann. Division 7 AOH and LAOH members are very proud to be walking behind their two honorees Shawn and Mary. The parade is rain or shine. The parade organizers are hoping for a great turnout to kick off the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and Irish heritage during the month of March.

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron helped mark the 14th Anniversary of P.S. I Love You Day on February 9th at Beach Street Middle School, Udall Middle School, Robert Moses Middle School, Islip High School and West Islip High School. Co-founders Brooke and Jamie DiPalma established P.S. I Love You Day, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating the stigma around mental health following the suicide of their father. Their mission is to instill hope for those affected by mental illness, fostering a supportive environment and a community where everyone feels welcomed,

loved, and supported. P.S. I Love You Day is celebrated on the second Friday of February each year. This year's theme is “Love is Meant to be Given”. We encourage all to spread love to the world, others and most importantly, yourself. This year’s stats are that they reached 330,000 people in 33 states across the US and Canada with more than 650 communities supporting the cause. Brooke graduated from West Islip High School 10 years ago where she was embraced by the administration and staff after her tragedy. She and her sister turned a tragic

experience into a positive effort to help others going through similar experiences. As they have done every year to help spread the word, 75 flags hung along Udall and Higbie, north of the High School and they sold more than 500 purple shirts. Brooke, who is a Financial Journalist, took the week off from work to speak on the cause at more than 20 schools this year. Her sister, Jamie is a teacher in Sachem and couldn't tour this year. It has been half of Brooke’s life since she lost her dad 14 years ago. She carries PS I love you throughout every chapter of her life.

I Love You website. "Mental health is health. It is as important as our physical well-being and is an essential part of our quality of life. The Town of Islip has many resources available, such as skilled mental health professionals at our YES Mental Health Clinic in

Brentwood and fitness programs run through Department of Parks and Recreation, all of which can aid in improving the mind body connection," said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. On P.S. I Love You Day, we ask everyone to wear purple to stand up against bullying, help end depression, and ultimately prevent suicide. It is our hope that as we walk around our communities, schools, and workplaces, we hear messages of positivity that make us all feel special, loved, and reminded that we are never alone.
