Bellina’s Pizza & Restaurant, located at 22 East Main Street in East Islip, was recently welcomed to the community on November 1st of last year. Owned and operated by co-owners Haki Mucaji and his brother-in-law Mati Shatri, this establishment was immediately seen as a
great addition to the other Main Street businesses. Along with serving delicious pizza, pasta, heroes and other specialties, Bellina’s has a policy of serving those in need in the surrounding neighborhood. A sign at the front door notes that anyone who is hungry and unable to pay will be fed for free. As Mucaji, a native of the former Yugoslavia, reminisced, “My father always said - do good and it will come back to you.” Mucaji says he brought this policy over from a former business in Bay

Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND
Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance
to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Connecting Cultures Fifth-graders at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School took part in a virtual field trip to the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario on February 2nd. Held via Skype, the interaction was facilitated by technology integration specialist Timothy Brush. The students could see and hear museum curators displaying and discussing historical artifacts, which correlated with their social studies curriculum on Canada including Canadian geography,
landforms and waterways; the First Peoples of the Americas; complex societies’ development of resources and trade; and European exploration and its effects. “The way they showed how their canoes were made was really cool,” said Reese Breslin. “We couldn’t believe how much stuff they could carry in them.” “It was very interactive and engaging,” said Devan Lange. “It was amazing how these people could make things so advanced

Medal Winners 101 Years Young
Ms. Helen Selva recently turned 101 on Sunday, February 11th. A lifelong resident of the Town of Islip, she was born and raised in Bay Shore, graduating from Bay Shore High School. She then
moved to Islip, where she has resided for more than 50 years. Helen had a long and successful career with Mobile Oil, moving up through the ranks to a high management position,
East Islip High School’s varsity wrestling team competed in the League V championships at Comsewogue High School on February 3rd, capturing 11 medals. Senior captain Zach Cabrera (126 pounds) and fellow senior Kiernan Stanton (220 pounds) were both finalists in their respective weight
classes. Third-place winners included senior captain Nick Picece (132 pounds), junior Jonathan Guadagno (160 pounds), and sophomore Nick Agresta (182 pounds). Earning fourth place were freshman Anthony Buccino (113 pounds), junior Rich Squeglia (138 pounds), sophomore Mark Shayew (145 pounds),
freshman Michael Colon (152 pounds) and senior Isaiah Robinson (182 pounds). All Redmen wrestlers qualified to compete in the Suffolk County championships to be held on February 10th at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood.

She has traveled through most of the world and remained quite active, driving herself to church every day up until last year when she suffered a stroke, from which she has fully recovered. It is wonderful to listen to Helen talk about growing up in Bay Shore, and it’s amazing to listen to details about the Truman administration. Her family wishes her a very Happy 101st Birthday and many more happy, healthy years to come. 3. Location of poll watchers. An area, with a full view of the polls, will be designated for poll watchers. 4. Final vote tally. Following the recording of the vote by the District Clerk and inspectors of election, poll watchers will be permitted time to view the voting machines prior to the custodian from the Suffolk County Board of Elections locking the machines. The East Islip School District embarked on a new reading adventure this school year. The 1,000 Book Project is a voluntary, readaloud program offered to students in kindergarten, made possible by a generous donation from the district’s From For the Kids Foundation. At both Connetquot and Timber Point elementary schools, kindergartners were challenged to begin a journey of reading 1,000 books before they move on to the grade 3-5 buildings. To participate,
students had to register for the program in their elementary building. The books were chosen by Sara Anderson, the district’s director of humanities alongside Connetquot Principal Danielle Flaumenhaft and Timber Point Principal Danielle Naccarato. Each of 100 book bags provided contained 10 books, including a high quality read-aloud, two fiction read-alouds, two nonfiction read-alouds with a science or social studies focus, one counting book, one
alphabet book and three titles with predictable or rhyming texts. Many of the titles were Caldecott Honor Books, Theodore Seuss Geisel Honor Books or Ezra Jack Keats Honor Books. “The heart of the 1,000 Book Project is to foster a lifelong love of reading, beginning at an early age,” said Sara Anderson, the district’s director of humanities. “The hope is that our families will enjoy the time reading together.”

Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron was honored to recognize new Eagle Scout Daniel John Brake with
Diane, a breast cancer survivor. He worked with his Troop in refurbishing the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition garden at Islip Town Hall. His project included building a bench overlooking the garden for cancer survivors, family and friends to come to reflect and relax. During the month of October, the Coalition adds handmade butterflies with the names of survivors and those who lost their battle to cancer. “I am so proud of Daniel and his accomplishments. His selfless tribute to his mom and others battling breast cancer is an example of leadership for others to emulate,” said Legislator Boy Scouts of America Flotteron. Troop 370, Islip. Students showed their support for DiPalma’s nationally recognized campaign by wearing purple, giving free hugs and posting inspirational messages against bullying and depression. “Legislator Flotteron has always been an influential part of P.S. I Love You
Day since it took off seven years ago. He reached out to me once again this year to offer his support in any way he can to make it the best one yet,” said Brooke DiPalma. In 2012, Ms. DiPalma created a YouTube video that has inspired more than 70,000 viewers. Following the suicide death of her father, Joseph, she turned her grief into awareness in order to help others suffering. She remembers the last words from her father that so often people
leave us with, I Love You. She has marked the second Friday in February as P.S. I Love You Day. She hopes that people across the globe will wear a sea of purple, standing up against bullying, helping end depression, and ultimately end suicide. “You can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Brooke is a perfect example, having her message go nationally is a testament to her commitment,” said Legislator Flotteron.
