The Bridges Academy who took the ORQE have advanced on to the Regional Finals Round. The Regional Finals will be held in Bridgeport, Connecticut on April 14th. Students will participate in several rounds of buzzer competition questions, challenging their knowledge of history even more. Congratulations to Emma Beqaj, Alannah Chernik, Madelaine Mulle, Drew Robbins and Patrick Vesey on advancing to Regional Finals, and wish them luck as they strive to qualify to compete at the National Finals this May in Louisville, Kentucky.

GUEST SPEAKER - Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt recently addressed members of the Long Island Business Development Council (LIBDC) at a monthly dinner meeting held at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip. Councilwoman Bergin Weichbrodt took the opportunity to emphasize the Town’s continued commitment to bringing new businesses to the area, as well as aiding existing businesses looking to expand, citing the assistance and support provided by the Islip Industrial Development Agency, that in 2014 alone, induced a record 27 new projects, which helped to create 1700 jobs, while retaining 669.

The National History Bee is an academic competition for middle school students that tests their knowledge of a wide range of historical topics. Since September, five middle school students from The Bridges Academy have been preparing for the competition under the direction of our Middle School teacher, Ms. Breitkreutz. The first round, held in January, was the ORQE or the Online Regional Qualifying Exam. Students took a 50 question multiple choice test online in hopes that their scores would move them on to the Regional Finals round. All five students from

Broken Lines By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called. If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right? So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes. It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on. Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately. Just two years ago, I was getting ready to apply to college. It was junior year, and I was just starting the entire application process. Now, as I undertake my first year at Villanova, my little brother is starting his transition into what will be his academic journey. I’ve tried to bestow all of my wisdom regarding college onto him, but in the end, he is really the driving factor behind taking the right steps. Although my brother and I are very similar, when it comes to colleges, we crave different types of institutions. I wanted a smaller school, where I can try to become the “big fish in a little pond.” My brother has made it known that he would be happier at a bigger school, where he can have a great time, and experience different influences. With any luck, he’ll be able to get into several of his dream-schools.

Two years ago, when I was in the exact same position my brother is in now, I was overwhelmed. So much gets thrown at you during the application process, and you’re asked to make huge, life-changing decisions. I can only hope my brother makes all the right choices. I can’t help him in many aspects, because only he can make himself happy. As much as I love him and want to guide him toward the place where I could see him studying, it is ultimately his decision. No matter what the outcome, I’ll respect my little brother’s choice and support him until he graduates. I can’t wait to hear about all the wonderful things my brother accomplishes with his life. Right now, it’s just a matter of getting into college! Who knows, maybe we’ll end up at the same university!

Three outstanding student-athletes from Islip High School – football player Cobie Rose and soccer players Brooke Skahan and Frankie Wolf – signed National Letters of Intent on February 4th to play for colleges next fall. Star lineman Rose will play Division I football next year for the Tigers of Towson University in Maryland. “I’m so excited,” said Rose. “It’s a big accomplishment and my family is very happy for me.” A three-year varsity starter for the Bucs, Rose was dominant at his position last fall, earning him All-County, All-Long Island, All-State and AllMetropolitan honors. He had verbally committed to Bryant University earlier in the year, but when Towson showed interest, he knew it was the place for him. “I loved the whole atmosphere in Baltimore, and the great facilities,” he said. “I’m a city type of guy.” He hasn’t yet decided on a major but is leaning toward physical education or business. For Rose, playing in the Suffolk Division III championship game against Sayville last Nov. 20 was the highlight of his Islip career. “It was a big thing for our team, even though we lost,” he said. For now, he’s just looking ahead, saying, “I’m happy to be done with the recruiting process and looking forward to starting college life.” Skahan will join the New York Institute of Technology’s Bears squad while majoring in nursing. Skahan, who plays defense, was named AllState in 2013 and 2014, All-County in 2012 and All-League as a freshman in 2011. The strength of NYIT’s nursing program led her to choose the school. Skahan enjoyed touring

its Old Westbury campus and said, “I am really looking forward to playing with the team.” Fellow Bucs defenseman Wolf, who played with her teammate on the school’s 2011 and 2012 county champions, signed with the University of the Cumberlands in

Williamsburg, Kentucky. “I always wanted to be away at college, and be down South,” she explained about her choice. The fact that the university’s Patriots soccer program has struggled a bit was actually a selling point for Wolf. “I didn’t want to join a legacy,” she

said. “I wanted to create a legacy of my own, and help create a winning team.” Wolf will major in political science with a dual minor in business administration and psychology. Her future plans also include law school and a career as a corporate lawyer.

MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture. This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it. We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

The entire East Islip School District community came together on the morning of February 6th to share ideas and advocacy initiatives at the second annual East Islip Advocacy Breakfast & Community Workshop, held at the district office board room in Islip Terrace. A breakfast reception was skillfully prepared and served by students from the East Islip High School Culinary Arts & Hospitality Career Academy, who were introduced by their teacher, Patricia Emmons-Fritz. More than a dozen performers from the cast of this year’s East Islip Middle School musical, “Once On This Island,” sang “We Dance” for the attendees, who included district administrators, directors and building principals as well as State Sen. Phil Boyle, State Assemblyman Andrew R. Garbarino, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Board President Steven Behan. Representatives were also on hand from the East Islip Athletic Booster Club, eiMAPS, For the Kids Foundation, EJ Autism Foundation, the East Islip Public Library, East Islip TaxPAC, Rotary of the Islips, East Islip Community Chamber of Commerce, the Budget Advisory Committee, the Long-Range Planning Committee, the five school PTAs and SEPTO, the East Islip High School

County Title Winner East Islip’s varsity boys bowling team finished first in its division, earning a divisional championship in Patchogue on February 3rd alongside the school’s varsity girls team, who also won their division. The Redmen boys team took first place in the Suffolk County tournament in Sayville on February 7th, earning them another county championship – their third

in the last five years – and a chance to win a state title on March 7th. The East Islip boys had another season to remember, according to coach Bob Cheadle, finishing as League 2 champions for the third straight year behind the efforts of five top performers, junior Mike Orobelo (222 average) and seniors John Kavanaugh (221), Nick Salentino

(220), Matt Amin (218) and Anthony Riggi (207). In the Suffolk County championship, EI was paced by Salentino (241 average), who had the second highest average in the tournament, as well as senior Nick DeFazio (219), Amin (218), Orobello (217) and Kavanaugh (203). Junior Mike Riolo and freshman Justin Orobello came off the bench to solidify the team’s victory.
