emarkable photographs by two East Islip High School students – junior Samantha Carroll and sophomore Sophia Gerace – were selected for display at the New York State Art Teachers Association’s 26th Annual Legislative Student Art Exhibition. The work will be displayed in the Legislative Well in Albany’s Capitol Building from February 29th through March 3rd. The exhibit showcases the state’s art programs.

The formal opening of the Smithers Family Center at Columbia University Medical Center for prevention, research and treatment will be held this year. EAGLE SCOUT HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony for James Mellet of Troop 205 in Great River. For his Eagle project, Mr. Mellet constructed a retaining wall and established a team photography site for the East Islip Soccer Club. Councilman Flotteron thanked Mr. Mellet for his community service and congratulated him on attaining the rank of Eagle.
Getting in the Zone
Islip High School seniors Cheyenne Coughlin and Connor Coleman were recently honored with this school year’s Suffolk Zone Award, presented by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a dinner at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge. Chosen by Islip’s physical education staff, the Suffolk Zone Award is presented annually to one male and one female student from the graduating class who strongly contribute to the positive outcomes of their physical education classes as well as the school. The criteria for achieving this
award include exceptional physical performance, scholastic ability and outstanding character and leadership qualities in physical education, as well as in schoolwide activities. Coleman is a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Mathletes, Young Republicans and the student union. He plans to study accounting in college next fall. An AP Scholar, Coughlin has maintained a 99 average in physical education throughout her high school career. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society and Athletes
Helping Athletes, as well as participating in the student union and student government. She will attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall. “Cheyenne and Connor have both gone above and beyond in the area of physical education,” said Robert Panariello, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “Physical education has provided them with an opportunity to learn in a nontraditional classroom setting and a chance to challenge themselves physically. We thank them both for their impact at Islip High School.”

The Birthday Betta By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete
with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first. I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet. Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate… Tiny brain, big dreams. The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with. I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small
plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another. Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.) ‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have. Here’s to many more!

Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair on May 7th. “It was a wonderful experience for all,” said Principal Aileen O’Rourke. “Learning about science is at the heart of a science fair project. Our society relies more on science every day, and science fairs are a great way for students to become more knowledgeable about how the world around them works.”

Fantastic Photographers Remarkable photographs by two East Islip High School students – junior Samantha Carroll and sophomore Sophia Gerace – were selected for display at the New York State Art Teachers Association’s 26th annual Legislative Student Art Exhibition. The work will be displayed in the Legislative Well in Albany’s Capitol Building from February 29th through March 3rd. Carroll’s piece, “Life Between the Lines,” was inspired by a project on early 1900s photographer August Sanders. “Using his style of photography, the skills and techniques taught in our photography class, and my own ideas and creativity, I was able to create the content in the image,” said
Carroll. For her photograph “Radiance,” Gerace found inspiration in a light in her home. “I took this photo for an assignment on shadows and reflections in darkroom photography,” she explained. “My parents’ beautiful light in their bedroom was the inspiration for the project; it reflects pretty patterns onto the ceiling and walls whenever it is turned on. While taking this photo, I had to angle a film camera upwards and focus on the light while it was on. After I took the photo, I developed the film and then enlarged and developed the photo in the darkroom, which is one of my favorite processes.” Co-sponsored by the New York State Alliance
for the Arts in Education and organized by NYSATA in collaboration with New York State United Teachers and state legislators, the exhibit showcases the state’s art programs and provides student-artists with an opportunity for statewide recognition. It is held each spring, culminating in a March 3rd reception for students, parents and teachers, where legislators from across New York celebrate the artistic accomplishments of their aspiring artist constituents. “Samantha and Sophia have demonstrated exceptional skill at darkroom photography,” said their teacher, Heather Toomey. “Their hard work has paid off, and I am proud of their accomplishments.”
