The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

Do you know who cleans and maintains many Long Island Courts?

A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.

As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.

As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”

Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and

a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”

TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.

Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

The petition for the office of Trustee of the East Islip Public Library shall be directed to the Clerk of the School District; shall be signed by at least twenty-five (25) qualified voters of the School District or two (2%) percent of the voters who voted in the previous annual Library election of members to the Library Board of Trustees, whichever is greater, shall state the residence of each signer, the name and residence of the candidate being nominated for the office of Trustee of the East Islip Public Library and shall describe the specific vacancy on the Board of Trustees for which the candidate is nominated; which description shall include at least the length of term of office and the name of the last incumbent. that, pursuant to Section 2014 of the Education Law, personal registration of voters is required and no person shall be entitled to vote at said meeting and election whose name does not already appear on the register of the said School District, or who does not register as hereinafter provided except as may otherwise be provided by the Laws of the State of New York. The register so prepared includes all persons who have presented themselves personally for registration in accordance herewith, and all persons who shall have voted at any Annual Meeting or Election, held or conducted at any time within four (4) years prior to the preparation of the register. 1. Identification and number of poll watchers.

Poll watchers shall be required to identify themselves to the District Clerk no less than seventy-two (72) hours prior to the election at which time they will be provided with an identification tag indicating “Poll Watcher.” Such previously identified poll watchers shall sign in with the District Clerk or her designee upon arrival at the polling place. One (1) poll watcher for each election district will be permitted per organization at any given time. No candidate may act as a poll watcher.

2. Voting booths.

Poll watchers will not be permitted behind the voting booths at any time during voting hours.

3. Location of poll watchers.

An area, with a full view of the polls, will be designated for poll watchers.

4. Final vote tally.

Following the recording of the vote by the District Clerk and inspectors of election, poll watchers will be permitted time to view the voting totals. Poll watchers are not permitted behind the inspectors while the tally is being taken by the District Clerk and inspectors.

5. Miscellaneous.

Any questions regarding poll watchers are to be directed to the District Clerk, Stephanie Parker. All actions of poll watchers shall be unobtrusive and may in no manner interfere with the ordinary conduct of the voting.

Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs

Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought

great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.

Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

primary annual fundraiser, a walk-through style Chinese Auction, in Sayville on April 15. Legislator Flotteron Honors The 104th Eagle Scout With Troop 205

104TH EAGLE SCOUT WITH TROOP 205 HONORED - Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recently recognized Louis Dominick Attard of Islip Terrace on being the 104th Eagle Scout for Troop 205 at his Eagle Court of Honor at the Timber Point Elementary School. Louis’ Service Project, earning him Eagle Scout status, was repurposing used tires, donated by local tire stores, to make 20 pet beds for a local pet adoption center, One-Love Dog Rescue. These dog beds were given to the families fostering dogs. He is currently a senior at East Islip High School where he excels academically and a member of the school’s Robotics Team, Music program, Volleyball, Baseball and Track teams. In addition, Louis is a Youth Group Member at his Church - St. Peter the Apostle Church in Islip Terrace. He is interested in a future in Aerospace Engineering.

Jenna Borelli Signs For Soccer With University Of Scranton

BORELLI SIGNS FOR SOCCER - East Islip High School senior Jenna Borelli recently signed a national letter of intent to play soccer this fall for the University of Scranton. She plans to major in nursing. A center midfielder, Borelli has played on the varsity soccer team since her freshman year. She awarded Scholar-Athlete, All-League and All-Conference honors as well as being named MVP in the Suffolk County championship game in 2021.
