Years ago, I was roaming the aisles of Costco and picked up a book, titled, 101 Simple Ways to Be Good To Yourself by Donna Watson Ph.D. I’ve been re-reading it ever since. As we grow older and our responsibilities mount, we lose touch with our own needs. Children, spouses, jobs (second jobs), mortgages, car payments, friends in need…the list is endless. The weekdays bleed into each other in a frenetic blur, and on weekends we can barely catch up on sleep, catch our breath and take the kids to their weekend activities. Sometimes “adulting” can make you want to cry “Uncle.” Most likely, you’re running on fumes. If your battle cry of the moment is, “Stop the ride, I wanna get off!” a few small adjustments can recharge a burnt out battery. There are plenty of simple ways to be good to you, which will, in turn, help you be good to others. BREATHE. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, stop right there and breathe. Breathe out all of the air in your body through your mouth. Count to four and
then breathe in through your nose, filling up your abdomen (not your chest). Hold for four seconds. Then, slowly let the air leak out through your mouth as your belly deflates. Repeat. LAUGH. Make YouTube your friend. I personally love the television show, All In The Family. When I need a good laugh, I cue up a full episode on YouTube and laugh myself silly. Laughing is good for the soul. LISTEN. Nothing soothes me like Jazz music. Did you know that brain surgeons play their favorite music in the operating room to take the pressure off? Sometimes, in order to do your best, you have to actually place your attention elsewhere to remain centered and focused. WALK. Take a walk in nature. Walk briskly, look at the grass, the trees and the sky. Breathe in the crisp air, feel your body move and your heart rate slightly increase. Feel your muscles working to move your body. SPEND TIME WITH ANIMALS. If you have a dog or a cat, spend time cuddling and petting your
animal companion. Really take in their energy. If you don’t live with any animals, consider spending time at a dog park to be around animals, or at a local horse stable. Spending time around animals is healing. TAKE A LESSON. You don’t have to make a commitment, time-wise or financially. You can simply take a lesson or two for fun. It will bring a sense of play and adventure to your life. Do it by yourself, or bring a friend or family member along. TAKE A MINI-BREAK. Look for Groupons or off-season deals for short weekend getaways that are within driving distance, and change your environment for 48 hours...or 24 hours if you must. MASSAGE. Everywhere you go now, there are massage and nail spas. Carve out 30 minutes and go for a shoulder rub or a relaxing foot rub... just because. These are just a few of the simple things you can do to be good to yourself. Being good to yourself is like saving money in the bank. You can then spread the wealth to the ones you love.

A Rose By Any Other Color... Valentine’s Day is the holiday of expressive romantic overtures towards the one you love. Where there is amore, there have always been roses. And why not? They’re beautiful, they smell sweet, they brighten any room, and unlike chocolates, they don’t come with calories. Although the universal symbol of romance is the single, long-stemmed red rose, and a bouquet of
red roses spells love times a dozen, there is a lush rainbow of roses found in nature for your paramour to enjoy. To be exact, there are over one hundred species of roses found in nature. Apart from romance, do you want to show your mother, a dear friend or your child that they are special and cared for? Perhaps you want to brighten a co-worker’s day or congratulate someone.
Here is a guide that spells out what several different colored roses actually mean: The Red Rose is, of course, the universal symbol of love. The Pink Rose connotes admiration, gentleness, grace and sweetness. The Yellow Rose is bright and cheerful, and makes a statement that someone brightens up your life. and innocence. The Orange Rose is a more rare breed of rose and expresses enthusiasm and energy. Islip High School business ownership and marketing students recently received firsthand experience in building a business from the ground up. Teams of students competed against each other using the business game Risky Business, which tasks players to be the first to build a company and complete an initial public offering, with success depending on decisions, timing and competition
with opponents. Using the game as a learning tool, students had to meet certain criteria to complete their business plan; hire marketing, product development, finance and sales executives; develop a product line with patents; and secure additional funding. Meanwhile, their competitors used mergers and patent protections to hold them back. Each step of the business plan that was completed allowed the
students to move to the next step, until they had all the components to make an IPO. “The students were really engaged in this activity,” said business teacher Renee Clock. “This handson experience helped the students connect what they have been learning about in the classroom through a realistic approach. They enjoy learning in a nontraditional environment.”
Student of the Month Celebration Resurrecting a popular ceremony for the first time in a decade, Islip High School held its Student of the Month Celebration on Jan. 15 in the school’s cafeteria, with Principal Michael Mosca and Assistant Principal Curtis Juengerkes honoring 45 terrific students who had been recognized for their achievements during the months of September, October, November and December by the school’s
careers, English, ELL, fine and performing arts, guidance, mathematics, physical education and health, science, social studies, technology and world language departments. Also honored were four staff members. “It’s a very special event,” said Juengerkes, who spearheaded the celebration’s return. “We get to recognize students in different disciplines, because you don’t have to
be a valedictorian or an AllCounty athlete or musician to merit recognition. Islip is a special community to be a part of, and we have some very talented students and staff. This gives us the opportunity to recognize and appreciate some of the things that make Islip whole, that give it the character it has as well as the integrity and wisdom we thrive on.”

Town of Islip Free CPR Training Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined Suffolk County officials to announce that the Suffolk County Department of Health Services will be offering free cardiopulmonaryresuscitation training classes for residents during the month of February in the Town of Islip. The trainings will focus on chest-compression-only CPR, which, according to the American Heart Association, has the same
statistical odds of saving a person’s life as traditional CPR. Classes are open to teenagers and adults. “February is Heart Health Month, and serves as an important reminder to make intelligent lifestyle choices, including exercise and eating right,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Enrolling in a life-saving training course however, could be one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make, and we’re proud to be a
part of this invaluable program.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Health Services, said, “We appreciate the participation of these ambulance companies who have so generously offered their services free of charge in order to increase the numbers of people who are trained to respond when witnessing a sudden cardiac arrest. Our EMS partners know better than anyone the importance of

Easy Vegan Pasta Bolognese By Marilyn Porzio of Dix Hills, New York
What You Will Need
1/2 cup diced portobello mushrooms 1/2 cup sweet green peas 1 24 oz. jar of Ragu Traditional Pasta Sauce (no sugar added variety) 2 tablespoons red wine 1 pinch of salt 1 pinch of black pepper 1 sprinkle of turmeric 1/4 package of Smart Ground meatless soy crumbles 2 heaping tablespoons dairy-free butter substitute 1 box of your favorite pasta
How To Make It Melt butter substitute in a large or medium sized skillet and add in Smart Ground soy crumbles. Mash up and turn crumbles as they brown (about 4 minutes). Turn off heat and set aside.
Pour jar of pasta sauce into a medium or large saucepan, turn on medium heat and stir in diced mushrooms and cooked soy crumbles. Let sauce simmer and then add in tumeric, salt, pepper and red wine; stire altogether, turn heat to low and cover tightly to re-simmer. Boil water and cook pasta for approximately 10 minutes until al dente. (soft, but slightly firm). Rinse and drain pasta and set aside. Steam peas in the microwave or 2-3 minutes and stir peas into sauce. Remove covered sauce from heat. Plate pasta, pour sauce over pasta and enjoy!

Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters. The Paws of War Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. Through this program they are able to provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. They can also greatly increase the quality of life for someone suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Paws of War trains service dogs to combat the daily issues that someone suffering from TBI has. Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran. The lives of many American Heroes have been changed forever because of what this organization has done for them!

Therapy Dog Program - This is a volunteer based program in which certified Therapy Dogs are brought to visit individuals that would benefit from a dog, but unfortunately cannot have one at the time being. War Torn Pups Program - This program has brought back dogs from Afghanistan, Syria and Jordan that Service Members have found while out on tour. Community Education Program - This program allows Paws of War to work with members of their local community. Through this program, they are able to provide a direct connection between Veterans and the younger population. Vets to Vets Medical RV - This mobile RV provides certain medical services for service animals at no cost to Veterans!

Islip’s bilingual wedding officiants conducted 19 ceremonies, and anticipate even more this year,” the Supervisor added. “The Town of Islip offers an inexpensive alternative for your wedding ceremony that is both personal and professional,” said Town Clerk Olga Murray. “For the third year running, we’ve extended our hours for those looking to exchange their vows on Valentine’s Day. It’s such a special day for the bond to begin, and you’ll never forget your wedding anniversary,” she
added. Nuptials will be hosted by appointment only in the Town Board room located at Town Hall, 655 Main Street, between the hours of 9:00 am and 7:30 pm. Appointments will be offered on a first come first served basis and a facility use fee of $50.00. East Islip Swim Star
East Islip High School senior swimming star Camryn Kreuscher signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Rhode Island. At the Dec. 19 ceremony, she was congratulated by her family and Athletic Director Stephen Restivo.
During her remarkable swim career at EI, Kreuscher has achieved All-State, All-Long Island and All-County honors, and won the county championship in the 50yard freestyle on Nov. 3. A member of the school’s Foreign Language Honor Society, she plans to major in textile and fashion merchandising while at URI. “The two main reasons I was interested in URI was that the school offered my major and that it has a Division I swim team which competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference,” said Kreuscher. “During my official visit, I was given
the opportunity to spend time with the assistant coach and head coach as well as meet the girls on the team at a pasta party at their beach house. Once the visit ended, I knew URI was a great fit for me. Being a swimmer, the close proximity to the beaches was another reason for my decision.” After graduation, Kreuscher will spend the summer working as an ocean lifeguard on Fire Island before heading off to URI in late August. MAKING WISHES GROW - Dance Connection of Islip, as well as other local performers and dance companies, performed at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville, on Sunday, January 20th. The performance raised money which granted the wish of a child named Matthew from Huntington Station, NY through Make-AWish of Suffolk County. Matthew was referred to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® in 2015 when he was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocystosis, a rare cancer that causes LCH cells to build up in certain parts of the body, where they can damage tissue or form lesions. To help keep his mind off of the treatments and procedures he goes through, Matthew enjoys learning about cars. His favorite movie is Disney Pixar’s Cars which is why when he was medically eligible for a wish come true, Matthew wished to visit the magical Walt Disney World Resorts and be one of the first guests to explore Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy. With the help of Making Wishes Grow, Matthew and his family plans to boarded their plane on January 26th. Four Islip Middle School students from the district’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted - Abby Alfano, Erica DeLapi, Emily Lewis and Jaci Narducci – won first place in the 27th annual Future City Competition in New York City on January 19th, beating out 43 other regional teams. “Our team has been working hard since last June to prepare for this five-part competition, and their hard work paid off,”
said EXCEL coordinator Julia Johnson. DiscoverE’s national, project-based engineering program Future City enables students in grades 6-8 to imagine, research, design and build cities of the future using “SimCity” software. Future City’s 2018-2019 theme of “Powering Our Future!” tasks student participants to design innovative power grids for their future cities that can withstand and quickly recover from

Future City Competition the impacts of a natural disaster. The Islip foursome came home from Manhattan with trophies, medals and prizes including iPads and Amazon gift cards. They will move on to the next phase of the competition, spending February break representing New York at the Future City National Finals in Washington, D.C., competing against teams from across the nation as well as the globe.

Now they have to do those things online.” Officer Pitch, a familiar face as a countywide school presenter for the past several years, provided parents and children with helpful tips and proactive strategies to keep our students safe. She urged the assembled parents
to keep communicating with their children regarding internet usage and devices and discussed the challenge of keeping up with current social media apps and websites frequented by students. “Every day there’s thousands of new apps out there,” Pitch said. “As soon as you learn about something, they’re on to the next thing.” Pitch emphasized that any negative or inappropriate words or images that a student says or posts online, even privately, can be disseminated indefinitely and cause significant harm. “If you wouldn’t say it in person, don’t say it online,” Pitch told the students, leaving them with words of wisdom to guide them in future online endeavors. Concluding the evening, the Commack and Sherwood PTAs raffled off a pair of Amazon Kindle Fires to two lucky students.

Students from East Islip High School’s English 11, creative writing and broadcast television classes recently toured the famed NBC Studios in New York City, enjoying behindthe-scenes access to the studio’s sets, broadcast centers and writing rooms. The tour included the broadcast sets of shows such as “NBC Nightly News,” “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” as well as NBC’s new 4K theater, production gallery, studio rooms and broadcast operations center. Students also experienced a description of the entire television production process from the writing of the sketches and monologues to the steps for production and means of viewer access to shows. Additionally, the
students on the tour had the opportunity to create their own unique productions, utilizing their personal scripts and performances. The production was recorded for students to later download. As a follow-up activity in creative writing and broadcast television, the high schoolers wrote their own sketches, working cooperatively to create characters, scenario and dialogue and taking part in a group editing process they learned on the tour.
