Throughout the year, teams of PSEG Long Island employees visit the Interfaith Nutrition Network’s (INN) Mary Brennan Soup Kitchen in Hempstead to lend a helping hand in the community. At least once a month, employees provide meals, food, clothing and toiletries to the INN’s guests, and help out with whatever else is needed at the soup kitchen. Responsibilities include preparing and serving hot, nutritious meals to guests in the
soup kitchen, and stacking non-perishable food items in the INN’s Choice Pantry, where guests receive free food items to provide their families with weekend meals. Other volunteer opportunities include working in the walk-through thrift shop, helping guests select donated clothing, kitchen items, and other household essentials free of judgment and free of charge. PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves

Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! Islip, NY – Meghan O’Reilly, a junior at SUNY New Paltz, was recognized by Supervisor Angie Carpenter at Town Hall recently. The East Islip High School graduate completed a mural of an oyster’s life cycle this summer at the Town’s Shellfish Hatchery in East Islip.
O’Reilly was presented with a Town Certificate of Recognition from Supervisor Carpenter and DEC Commissioner Martin Bellew. The 10’ X 8’ mural took approximately three weeks to complete. “Meghan volunteered her time to create this beautiful mural, and we appreciate her
dedication to community service,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “It is certainly an enhancement to our hatchery,” she added. “This mural illustrates the oyster life cycle in a tangible way, and is especially helpful to those young students who tour the hatchery,” said DEC Commissioner Bellew.

East Islip Robotics Team Takes On “Tower Takeover” At Adelphi East Islip High School’s robotics class participated in an outside event for the first time on Jan. 18, competing at Adelphi University’s seventh annual “Tower Takeover” VEX Robotics Competition qualifier. School robotics teams design, build and program robots for the VRC tournaments, then enter qualifying matches where two pairs of allied teams face off. In “Tower Takeover,” the object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by stacking cubes in goals and placing cubes in towers. East Islip’s students were at the top of their game at Adelphi, far exceeding expectations for a rookie robotics team, finishing 5-2-1 in the qualifying matches and ranking eighth out of 44 teams at the
end of preliminary competition. They lost in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs but earned one of their highest scores of the day. Comprised of some of the best and brightest young robotics engineers East Islip has to offer, the team was led by senior Sophia Bates, the captain and lead designer. Junior Kyle Kirschberg drove the robot for the duration, supported by other team members including Mike Baldino, Zoe Elder, Cody Knott, Jake Riordan, Jordan Quillan, Damon Swinson, Jake Thomsett and Pranaav Venkatasubramaniam. “I am very passionate about robotics and I am glad we got the chance to experience this competition outside of school,” said Bates. “It’s very validating to design and create a robot
inside a classroom and see it compete at a very high level against other schools and similar robotics programs.” “I loved driving the robot during the competition, having my team support me throughout the day by maintaining the robotic components and scouting other teams so that I went into each match prepared,” said Kirschberg. “I couldn’t have been prouder of this team,” said robotics teacher James Connell. “Everyone had a specific job on the day of the event and each job was instrumental to the team’s success. In the end, it was a great experience for this young group, and we are looking forward to even more success in future competitions.”
