PSEG Long Island is sharing tips for customers to save money and reduce their energy consumption every day of the year. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day was launched to encourage consumers to explore energy- saving opportunities. In the past eight years, since PSEG Long Island was established, business and residential customers throughout Long Island and the Rockaways have done just that. More than $380 million in rebates have been distributed to customers through PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency programs. That’s a savings of more than 2.1

billion kilowatts of energy since 2014 – and enough electricity to power more than 270,000 homes for an entire year. These tips can help customers save money and energy any time of year: · Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. · Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic

devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. · Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. · Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more.

· Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. · Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. · Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money. · Install a high efficiency air source heat pump

(ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Webster, Sterling Complete Merger

Not only can it help everyone feel, think, sleep and live better, it also improves overall quality of life. Physical activity is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression. Feed your soul, rock your recipes: The meaning of “family” may have changed, but family meals still make an impact.

Regular meals at home with family can help reduce stress, boost selfesteem and make the whole family feel connected. Try new heart-healthy recipes that can be made at home from the American Heart Association Heart-Check Recipe Certification Program. Stay on beat with your blood pressure: High blood pressure is a leading cause and controllable risk factor for heart disease and stroke and can contribute to worse outcomes for people who contract COVID-19. Close to half of American adults have high blood pressure. Of those, about 75% don’t have it controlled and many don’t even know they have it. The best way to know your blood pressure numbers is to have it measured at least once per year by a health care professional. If your blood pressure is normal and you are at least 20 years of age, regularly monitor it at home with a validated monitor and discuss the numbers with a doctor. Keep the Beat! Learn Hands-Only CPR: Each year, more than 350,000 EMS-assessed out-ofhospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States and about 70% of out-ofhospital cardiac arrests happen in homes. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Post 9/11 Veterans To Be Recognized For Their Service Local not-for-profit organization, Heroes Among Us joins with the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and local Veterans of Foreign Wars groups, and the Nassau County Executive’s office to build a monument in Eisenhower Park to honor all post 9/11 servicemen and women. The monument will join other memorials in Veterans Memorial Park which honor veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Monument will be the only monument of its kind on Long Island and one of the first in New York State honoring the courage, dedication, and bravery of United States servicemen and women who fought in military conflicts after 9/11. Over this twenty-year period, 7,000 servicemen and women died in battle and 30,000 post 9/11 veterans have died by suicide. The monument will provide a permanent reminder of their service and provide a much-needed sanctuary and reflection

space for veterans along with their families. “We are excited to have the assistance from our community to properly respect and honor our veterans in building this monument, which we feel was overdue,” said Virginia Cervasio, founder of Heroes Among Us. The estimated cost to build the monument is $150,000 and all the groups involved are currently working to raise the needed funds. DODENHOFF SIGNS TO PLAY LACROSSE FOR SUNY ONEONTA - East Islip High School senior Chelsea Dodenhoff signed a national letter of intent on Jan. 10 to play lacrosse for SUNY Oneonta, where she plans to major in psychology. Dodenhoff, a four-year Scholar-Athlete who plays attack, is a starter for the Long Island Empire travel lacrosse team. As a goalie for three years on East Islip’s varsity field hockey team, she serves as co-captain, earned AllCounty and All-County Honorable Mention accolades, and was named to Newsday’s Top 50 Field Hockey Players to Watch. Four East Islip Senior Artists Chosen For “Go APE” Exhibit East Islip High School seniors Kaitlyn Donnelly, Brianna Fairbrother, Thomas Henderson and Olivia McBride were recently selected for the Art League of Long Island’s 15th annual Go APE Advanced Placement Exhibition, which showcases exceptional work by art students from all over Long Island. Donnelly’s “A Wolf’s Ballad,” Fairbrother’s “In Your Blood,” Henderson’s “Contract” and McBride’s “Stomping on the Fast Fashion Industry” appear in the Dix Hills gallery’s show, which runs through Feb. 13 and is open to the public. Out of 135 students chosen across Long Island for the Go APE show, Henderson’s work was selected for the show’s press flyer. “These four are exceptional,” said Dan Figliozzi, their AP Art and Design teacher. “They are extremely talented, hardworking and all-around wonderful people. I love hanging with them every day, talking to them about their artwork and helping them elevate their craft. Greeting cards are popular ways to express love and affection on Valentine’s Day. However, those looking to say “I love you” and much more in a creative way may want to harken back to a tradition that is several centuries old. Purse puzzles were once an innovative way to send notes and illustrations and express other sentiments. Purse puzzles became popular

around 1720 and remained so until roughly 1840. The puzzles consisted of a sheet of paper folded into smaller parts. When unfolded, the purse puzzle would reveal several messages and handdrawn art. In the 19th century, purse puzzles were a clever way for lovers to send love notes on Valentine’s Day or other times of the year. Purse puzzles were a form of paper

art, similar to origami. Valentine’s celebrants can rekindle the magic of purse puzzles to add creative flair to this year’s celebrations. They can be made easily with tutorials found on websites such as YouTube. The finished puzzle will take a square shape and open up like a pinwheel until the full sheet of paper is revealed.

Hearts abound on February 14, and few symbols (and gifts) are more widely associated with a holiday than heartshaped boxes of chocolate are with Valentine’s Day. Chocolates became trendy in the mid-19th century when the first chocolate bar was made by British company J.S. Fry & Sons by combining cacao powder with sugar and cacao butter to make a rich, melt-in-your-mouth treat that was markedly different than the gritty and greasy drinking chocolate that was losing popularity in Europe. Within a few years, competitor Cadbury introduced the first box of chocolates. It was called the “Fancy Box” and it didn’t take long to become wildly popular. The marriage of chocolate and heartshaped boxes seemed a natural progression, but

the National Valentine Collectors Association says that heart-shaped boxes actually predate chocolate boxes. Various heartshaped vessels, including “betrothal pendants” and silver boxes in the shape of hearts, were popularized a century earlier. There even were heart-shaped porcelain boxes as well as ones for sewing. Having already introduced a chocolate box, Richard Cadbury marketed the first Valentine’s Day box in 1861. It was filled with delicious chocolates, and later could be saved as a keepsake to store special notes or other mementos, according to the North American Packaging Association. Furthermore, the gift fit with Victorian sensibilities in that it was demurely suggestive, NPR reports. Its introduction coincided perfectly with Valentine’s Day, which

also soared in popularity around the same time. Giving chocolate on Valentine’s Day also proved popular in North America. The American chocolate company Hershey’s introduced its Hershey’s Kisses in 1907, and in 1912 the Whitman’s Sampler arrived. In the 1920s, Russell Stover unveiled their own heart-shaped boxes, which today still include the “Red Foil Heart” and the “Secret Lace Heart.” Russell Stover has since become the No. 1 boxed chocolate brand in the United States. Today, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes holding 58 million pounds of chocolate are sold each year, reports the education resource SoftSchools. They have become a quintessential symbol of Valentine’s Day celebrations.

FCA runs numerous Children’s Mental Health and Wellness Services programs to help children with mental and/or behavioral health issues and their families, regardless of insurance status and provides Health Home Care Management for recipients of Medicaid in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Services are provided in the home, school and/or other community setting. FCA services utilize a “family-driven” process to create an individualized plan of service for each child and provides access to appropriate services to improve health outcomes and prevent hospitalizations.

Services (CFTSS): Provides in-home and community based supportive services, including therapy and rehabilitative support services to children who are at risk of being diagnosed or who are formally diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis. Services are available to recipients of Medicaid only.
