Higher interest rates and the lowest level of available homes in decades brought the crazy pace of 2020-2022 to a grinding halt. Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park), elected by the residents of the newly drawn 17th Legislative District in November 2023, was sworn into his fourth term in the County Legislature at the 2024 Legislative Organizational Meeting, held January 2 at the William J. Lindsay County Complex in Hauppauge. Legislator Donnelly, a graduate of Deer Park High School, is a proud life-long resident in Deer Park. He now represents residents from the Towns of Babylon, Huntington and Islip, including parts of Baywood, Deer Park, Dix Hills, Huntington, Melville, North Babylon, North Bay Shore and South Huntington. A four-decade Deer Park Fire Department volunteer, Legislator Donnelly served as a Town of Babylon Councilman from 2011

continuing to represent all of our neighbors as their voice in local government.” With his first responder background and commitment to keeping public safety a priority, Legislator Donnelly is pleased to have been reappointed by returning Legislative Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey to the Public Safety Committee which has jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to law-enforcement related business or activities, including the Police Department, the Sheriff’s Department, the County’s correctional facilities and the medical examiner. Legislator Donnelly was also reappointed as a member of the Fire, Rescue, EMS & Emergency Preparedness and Ways & Means Committees and will additionaly serve on the Seniors & Human Services

Committees. “From my first day in office, I have been focused on protecting the residents of Suffolk County and they have my commitment that I will continue to use my position on Public Safety to prioritize and advance these goals,” Legislator Donnelly added. “I also look forward to serve on the other committees to which I have been appointed.” Constituents can contact Legislator Donnelly at his district office by phoning (631) 854-4433. The 17th Legislative district office remains at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station and provides free notary services during regular office hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Runner Kaiden White, an Islip High School junior, recently had a spectacular day at the Molloy Stanner Games, held at Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory in New York City. In the 300-meter race, White ran a winning time

of 34.50, placing him in the top three fastest runners in New York State and top 20 nationally. He was awarded overall Most Outstanding Individual Performance at the meet. His time in the 300-meter was a new personal record

for White, breaking his previous record time, which he set earlier this year, and qualifies him for the New Balance Indoor Nationals, which will be held in March in Boston.

Among the innovative and award-winning services available are Job Fairs, held at convenient locations throughout the County,

and Suffolk County's OneStop Employment Center in Hauppauge which offers workshops, job placement assistance, resume preparation and career counseling. Mix butter and RedHot Sauce in medium bowl; set aside. 2. Arrange wings on large foil-lined pan. Bake on lowest oven rack for 30 minutes or until crispy, turning once. 3. Toss wings in sauce mixture until well coated. Serve with blue cheese and celery, if desired.

Islip High School Promotes CPR/AED Awareness

Just prior to the winter break, Islip High School facilitated Hands Only CPR instruction during physical education classes at the high school. This state-mandated lesson promotes awareness of the benefits of learning how to perform CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and serves as a first step for students interested in pursuing more formal CPR/AED certification. The CPR course, based on the

American Red Cross Two Step Save a Life program, is taught by Islip’s physical education teachers, who then take the instruction one step further and introduce how to identify, locate and use an AED located in the high school. “We teach this prior to the holiday recess because it’s a time when families tend to be in large gatherings and the likelihood of an emergency occurring may increase,”

said John Sparacio, Islip’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “Our students are engaged and very receptive to the training, and take it very seriously. My hope is to bring awareness and give direction on the benefits of being and becoming a certificated first responder, as well as providing resources for students to explore a potential career path in the health science field.”

Robotics Team Competes At VEX Over Under game

East Islip High School’s robotics team competed in the VEX Robotics Over Under game on Jan. 27, held at John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore. The all-day event featured over 45 teams from around the Tri-State area. This year’s tournament was played on a 12x12 square field. Two alliances – composed of one “red” and one “blue” team each – competed in twominute matches to attain a higher score. East Islip team captains Kaitlyn McCall and Jishnu Roy Chowhuri led the squad to a sixth-place finish at

the end of the qualification matches. Robot driver Matt Collins performed extremely well under the pressure and was 5-1 in competition play. The remaining robotics team members helped in the pit area all day, fine tuning and making last-minute adjustments to the robots. The team will next compete on Feb. 17 at Adelphi University. “I enjoyed coming to the event,” sophomore Jackson Carucci said. “It really opened me up to friendly competition and I gained valuable experience about teamwork and robotic

design.” “We did really well with our new robots,” junior William Blaschuk said. “We faced a lot of challenges that will help us learn and improve upon for our next competition.” “I was extremely proud of the team during this event,” technology teacher and robotics adviser James Connell said. “It’s a great opportunity for students in the robotics classes and club to get a real practical experience, and it helps them further expand their knowledge of competition robotics.”
