Long Island Fight for Charity, the nation’s only all-volunteer charity fund raising event and program is now conducting its search for 2018 volunteer charity boxers. Since 2003, over 300 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer. If you ever wanted to do something different and challenge yourself this is the year to make the commitment. The LIFFC 15th Main Event to be held on Monday, November 19th, 2018 will feature 10 or more bouts between volunteer charity boxers who have demonstrated their personal commitment to raising a minimum of $10,000 for the Fight for Charity organization’s fund, raising goals that benefit local charities, intensive physical training and participation in promotional activities and media interviews. Over $1 million has been donated to Long Island charities since LIFFC’s founding. Applications are now being accepted for volunteer charity boxers

What is required is a commitment to fundraising, “character,” a willingness to train and be ready to meet a business colleague toeto-toe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. Wrestlers Placed With eight place winners for the day, East Islip High School’s varsity wrestling team were happy hosts of the 31st annual Rocky Gilmore Classic wrestling tournament on January 6th.

Senior Zach Cabrera placed third overall at 126 pounds. Cabrera pinned his first opponent and came from behind to earn victory over fifth seed Esteban Sandoval of Brentwood in the quarterfinals.

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

In an effort to spread goodwill, the student government at Islip Middle School recently created “Busy Books” for young patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. Eager to show their support, the students donated unused coloring books and crayons to the cause and managed to compile hundreds of the Busy Books, which were

delivered to the hospital by student government co-advisers Kaitlin Rooney and Christine Sheridan, Principal Tim Martin and Assistant Principal Bryan Miltenberg. Additional books were donated to Amara’s Butterﬂies Foundation, an organization that partners with Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “We hope these books brightened a child’s stay

Islip High School music teacher Dr. Rich Harris Jr., who serves as the school’s choral, theater and music theory director, was recently selected as a quarterfinalist for the prestigious Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Museum. The annual Music Educator Award was established to recognize current educators, from kindergarten through college, who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. After intensive review of more than 2,300 nationwide initial applications, Dr. Harris was notified that he was selected as one of the remaining 197 music teachers named as quarterfinalists, hailing from 187 cities across 45 states plus Washington,

Tyler O’Neill, a sophomore at East Islip High School, was recently named the 2017-2018 Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Award for his outstanding leadership skills and participation in community service. O’Neill will representing East Islip at this year’s HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar, a three-day conference held at Adelphi University in Garden City from June 8th-10th. O’Neill was selected for the award based on his entry in the school’s

annual 300-word essay contest, asking students in 10th grade to describe the most rewarding and challenging aspect about being a leader in their school or community. O’Neill’s essay discussed his involvement in Boy Scouts and his experiences working with and helping younger scouts develop their skills. “Tyler is a well-rounded young man and dedicated student,” said his guidance counselor Nicole Vincenti. “He is passionate about his service to Boy Scouts

of America and is looking forward to working on his Eagle Scout project. I am very proud of Tyler and happy that he will have this amazing opportunity to attend the HOBY leadership conference.” Each year, the Lions Club of the Islips sponsors the school’s HOBY winner and donates the expenses for attending the seminar. Lions Club representative Eugene Petraitis visited the school to congratulate O’Neill and present a check. The Suffolk Zone awards are presented annually by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance to the top male and female physical education

students in each Suffolk County high school’s graduating class. Winning students are chosen for their strong contributions to the overall positive tone of their physical education classes as well as the school, and must fulfill rigorous criteria including an A average or above 90 in high school physical education classes, an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of junior year, and demonstrations of

outstanding character and leadership qualities. “Both Jenna and Evan contribute to the overall positive tone of the physical education class as well as the school,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. “They continue to make an outstanding effort to be cooperative, honest and enthusiastic in class, and Jenna and Evan have made East Islip proud once again for their accomplishments.”
