East Islip hosted its very first “Commanding” ceremony on Jan. 8 for 29 English as a New Language students in the district who had scored “commanding” on the NYSESLAT exam. These students exhibited sufficient knowledge in reading, writing, listening

and speaking the English language. “Here at East Islip, we have over 100 ENL students that represent 15 different languages of our world,” said Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world language. “This

ENL Students’ Command of English evening was a celebration of excellence and culture, bringing together our ENL students and families with East Islip’s teachers and administrators. We hope to make this wonderful evening a tradition here at East Islip.”

Effects of Water Polution Young scientists at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School are learning important lessons this year from representatives of the Cornell Cooperative Extension. During a recent CCE visit, fifth-graders enjoyed a “Stormwater Superheroes” presentation in which they learned about

ways to help keep local bays and watersheds clean, how harmful pollution is to marine life in the area, and how a storm drain system can help. The students also participated in hands-on science activities and met a friendly horseshoe crab. “It was wonderful to see how eager our students were to learn about how

critical it is to protect the water around us,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “They realized that it is vital to become responsible citizens who are aware of harmful pollutants and the negative impact they can have on our environments.”

Mushroom Barley Casserole By Neil Kaufman of Syosset, New York

Neil Kaufman of Syosset, links his family's recipe, Mushroom Barley Casserole, with unforgettable memories of his grandmother and his mother; and yearly holiday tradition. To this day, it's a dish that warm's the heart of his home. According to Neil, "My grandmother used to make this dish for all the Jewish holidays, except for Passover, when it is customary to avoid eating leavened grains."

The recipe was passed down from Neil's grandmother to his mother, and finally to him. "When my mother passed away, I took over, and I introduced the Mushroom and Barley to my wife’s family. They loved it so much, that now I have to bring it to all of their holiday dinners as well!" This dish has just a handful of ingredients and minimal preparation.

How To Make It

Combine: 1 cup of barley (whole grain or egg) 1 can of mushrooms 1 can of chicken broth 1 stick of butter 1 package of onion soup mix Mix the barley, soup mix, chicken broth and mushrooms in an oven safe dish. Quarter the stick of butter and add to each corner of the dish. Cover and bake in the oven at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove from oven, stir, and add 1 cup of cold water. Stir again. Re-cover and place back in the oven for 30 minutes at 375 degrees. Let cool and enjoy! Dr. Deepak Chopra is a traditionally trained physician who emerged onto the American medical scene in the eighties, preaching and practicing medicine based on the eastern principals of healing the whole person. One of the first public figures to speak about Quantum Physics, the mind/body connection and the health benefits of meditation, it seems times have finally caught up with the renowned health and wellness guru. In this conversation, we discuss everything from how meditation effects your overall physiology, to how the human spirit and brain converage and the essence of God.

field of possibilities. It’s a field where space, time, energy, information and matter all become one. It’s a field where there is uncertainty. It’s a field where there is creativity, and it’s a field where there is something called observer effect. The means intention orchestrated fulfillment. It’s a state of consciousness. When consciousness is without thought content, then everything is unified.

Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about meditation. You explain meditation as achieving the space that exists between our thoughts. Can you explain this?

Deepak Chopra: Well, if you’re in love then time doesn’t exist. If you’re having a good time, it flies. If you’re having deadlines then you start to think, “I’m running out of time.” If you’re bored you say, “Time is dragging.” If you’re in a very anxious situation, then time takes forever. Time is the way we measure our experience. In the deeper domains where there is unity

Deepak Chopra: The space between our conscious thoughts is referred to as a discontinuity. This is the ground of our existence, and more and more it’s being recognized by a few scientists, that the essential nature of everything is a discontinuity. When you look at a table or a tree or a plant or a piece of rock, they too are made up of atoms. The atoms are subatomic particles. The subatomic particles emerge out of something and then disappear into the same place. A few scientists are beginning to recognize that even though everything appears physical to us and our senses, at the most fundamental level of creation it’s a vibration. It’s something that is going on and off. The space between the two “ons” of every vibration is a discontinuity. That might be the ultimate ground of everything in the universe. That means that the discontinuity that exists between your thoughts is the ground of, not only your existence, but the ground of all existence. In other words, the consciousness that is at the background of your thoughts is the same consciousness which is at the background of all the intelligent activity of the whole universe. Allison Kugel: What can be achieved while in this state of discontinuity? Deepak Chopra: Complete silence in the mind and therefore complete silence in the body as well; a state of unity consciousness. What separates you from others is your individual mind that manifests as your personal ego. So if you take that out of the way, there is nothing that separates you from anything else in existence. Now we know from even fundamental particle physics that the space between subatomic particles, or what you call the discontinuity, is a

Allison Kugel: You have spoken many times about time being an illusion. That is a hard one to wrap our heads around. Can you explain that one?

consciousness, time doesn’t exist. Time is the movement of thought. It separates the observer from the observed when in the deepest reality, the observer and the observed, the seer and the scenery, the lover and the beloved… they’re all the same consciousness. Allison Kugel: How do you determine, according to your understanding, what you would refer to as the soul or spirit, and the brain? In other words, when that inner voice speaks to us or when we are having certain thoughts or feelings, what is coming from our soul and what is coming from our brain? Deepak Chopra: Everything comes from the soul. The brain is an instrument. All your fears, all your anxieties, all your phobias, all your imagination, all your fantasies, all your desires, your creativity, your insight, your intuition, your inspiration, your conflicts… the soul is a place of extreme opposites. It’s a place of ambiguity, a place of uncertainty, and a place of contradiction and paradox. The brain is just the instrument which orchestrates what your soul is. Your soul is evolving. It starts from a place

of extreme ignorance and ultimately ends up in a place of extreme enlightenment. That’s our journey. We use our brain and our body to orchestrate everything. Allison Kugel: If you take somebody like a mental health practitioner, and you were to bring up the topics of bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression and phobias; they would argue that it comes from chemical reactions taking place in the brain. Do you disagree? Deepak Chopra: Well, if I am listening to Beethoven on my radio and my radio is damaged, I won’t be able to hear Beethoven until I fix the radio. They’re right. You have to fix the instrument. But the fault of the instrument is not a reflection of the user of the instrument. Allison Kugel: Is it fair to say that you are more of a spiritual student as opposed to someone who adheres to any one particular religion? Deepak Chopra: It’s fair to say that I try to see spirituality in the teachings of great wisdom traditions. I try to find the spirituality and the universal insights in the teachings of great prophets… of those people that we call “enlightened.” So, for me there is no difference between the consciousness of, say, Jesus Christ and the consciousness of Buddha. That’s why I think spirituality is the biggest threat to religion. Allison Kugel: How do you define G-d? Deepak Chopra: I think the best definition of God is that God is a mystery. [It’s] the mystery of existence, the mystery of life, the mystery of the universe. As we get closer to this mystery, then we experience love, we experience compassion, we experience creativity, we experience intelligence, we experience joy, we experience loss of fear and loss of fear of even death. We experience inspiration, insight, intuition, imagination. Those are the things that bespeak of the mystery of our own existence. I would say that as soon as you try to conceptualize this mystery, say like a dead white man in the sky, then you lose the essence of the mystery. The moment you conceptualize it, then you limit it to your concept. If God is infinite then God cannot be conceptualized, just like infinity cannot be conceptualized. I would say God is also the source of space, time, energy, information and everything else that exists in the universe. The only definition that’s valid is that God is infinite possibilities.

Allison Kugel: Talk about reversing the aging process and what you’ve mentioned in the past about reversing it to the point where you can make yourself, biologically speaking, fifteen years younger or fifteen years older than your chronological age. Deepak Chopra: Your biology is an expression of what’s happening in consciousness. The fastest growing segment of the American population right now is over the age of ninety, and in many parts of the world, over the age of one hundred. A lot of that has to do with better nutrition, better lifestyle and better living conditions. That we’re not dying of smallpox or heatstroke or frostbite, and also because our nutritional status is such that our immune systems are healthy. But knowing that, we also know that if somebody is really abusing their body physically and emotionally; they are burned out and they smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and take drugs and alcohol and their relationships are really messed up, they could be biologically forty-five even though they’re chronologically twenty-five. The biological markers reflect a much older biology than their chronological years would suggest. Similarly, if you have somebody who is sixtyfive or older but they are physically and emotionally fit, then their biological markers could be much younger. Things like blood pressure, bone density, body temperature regulation, metabolic rate, fat content, cardiovascular conditioning, cholesterol, muscle mass, the strength of muscles, sugar tolerance, sex hormones, hearing, vision, skin thickness, immune function… they could be all reflective of a much

younger age. The human body is a function of, literally, all the forces of nature. If you understand that these forces of nature are an expression of your own consciousness, then you can reverse these forces of nature. Allison Kugel: Are any mainstream medical institutions asking for your your input? Deepak Chopra: Not advice, but definitely for education. We have programs that we offer to medical institutions and also people who take our courses (at The Chopra Center). We’re recognized by the American Medical Association for what they call “The Physicians Recognition Award.”

Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters. In addition, this organization runs a variety of other programs to help Veterans in need. The work of their Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. They provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran. The lives of many American Heros have been changed forever because of what this organization has done for them. Co-Founder Robert Misseri delighted me with a success story of a local Long Island Veteran who had been on 9 medicines and secluded himself from his wife and children...he was suffering. After receiving a service dog, he was able to get off of all of his medicines, he took his family on a camping trip and he now attends all family functions! If you want to inquire about recieving help from Paws of War, don’t hesitate to reach out to them! In addition to providing Veterans with a service dog, Paws of War opened their Vets to Vets Mobile Animal Clinic after they realized the crucial need for veterinary care for the pets of Veterans and first responders living with disabilities! This is the first of its kind and is manned by volunteers, veterinarians, vet techs, as well as some staff. This mobile RV provides free services, such as wellness checks, grooming, vaccinations, dental procedures and more to our hero’s companions. After visiting the Paws of War’s main office and training facility, located at 127 Smithtown Blvd in Nesconset, I couldn’t help but feel a sincere love for and desire to help

our Veterans from all who were there. This organization is “the real deal” and truly are there to help others. In an effort to help bring dogs back home from overseas, Paws of War runs a program called Worn Torn Pups. This program provides financial support to reunite military personnel with the stray animals they found and bonded with while at war. Donations to this program helps with costs that include vaccines, medial treatment, transportation and more. This organization feels that “while the financial investment is high...the relief, comfort and joy this program provides soldiers is immeasurable.” Paws of War relies heavily on donations and devoted volunteers to continue providing the services they offer. These manipulators were designed to play the VEX EDR “Swept Away” game, with students competing in a two-day tournament to determine which group’s design was most effective. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of a microaggression is “a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority.” I was heartbroken to read that Empire star Jussie Smollett had been viciously attacked in Chicago in what was allegedly a racist and homophobic hate crime. The assailants allegedly shouted, “This is MAGA Country!” during the attack. I will opt not to go into politics, instead sticking to the human side of the issue at hand. I have never understood unprovoked anger and hatred toward another. I can only conclude that it comes from within the perpetrator. As the late Dr. Wayne Dyer said, “When you squeeze an orange, orange juice is what comes out because that’s what’s inside. When someone squeezes you, that is, puts pressure on you, whatever comes out of you is what’s inside. And if you don’t like what’s inside, you

have the power to change it.” Perhaps this is an oversimplification of the complexity of human behavioral impulses, but one thing we can all do is be cognizant of daily microaggressions that add negative energy to the collective consciousness. Together, we can raise the vibration of this earth. Discriminatory jokes and offhand sarcastic quips about people’s gender, race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation are not harmless. They add to a collective hostility towards specific groups of people. Harmful language can also embolden people who are living in a state of fear and ignorance to commit egregious acts of hate against others. In addition, our children hear it, our grandchildren hear it, our friends and co-workers hear it. With each word we speak, we possess the power to either poison or heal a new generation of human beings. Going forward, when someone in your company talks about another group of people with discriminatory and mean spirited

language, even if it is meant to be veiled as a “joke,” you can make the choice to remove yourself from the conversation, gently re-direct the subject, or say, “I’m sorry, but I don’t think it’s funny to dehumanize people who are different from you. Please refrain from using that language in my presence.” Or, do as Joel Osteen would do. Point to your ears and say, “Sorry, but these are not garbage cans.” I understand that we are not always in a position to create a teachable moment, but you can certainly, gracefully, remove yourself from the conversation. As we have all witnessed, words can cause harm, and unfortunately, negative words can translate into negative actions if spoken to the wrong people. I pray for Jussie Smollett’s healing, and I pray that this incident serves as a landmark. When my son was about four years old, one of his favorite books was a children’s book titled, Words Are Not For Hurting. The concept is so simple, and as adults we often forget. Let’s try to remember.
