Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

Suffolk County Community College Women’s Basketball Head Coach and Athletic Director Kevin Foley, of Blue Point, earned his 400th career win last week when Suffolk defeated Hostos Community College 86-30. Foley is completing his 23nd year at the helm of Suffolk’s Women’s team that has advanced to the playoffs in 20 consecutive years. Foley’s 400th win with Suffolk’s Sharks complements an overall 400-125 record, including playing in 14 semi-finals, winning six regional championships, and a national title. Additionally, Foley’s teams have won one national and 11 regional sportsmanship awards and more than 41 of his former players have continued their intercollegiate athletic careers at fouryear Division II and Division III schools. “Athletic Director Foley is wholeheartedly a Shark. He is an excellent teacher, first and then an awesome coach,

Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president. Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was

confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year. Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but was admitted to the bar in 1823 and soon became a successful lawyer in Buffalo. Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as

Taylor’s Vice President. He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days

Seven East Islip High School student-musicians were selected for All-State honors this year by the New York State School Music Association. Senior flutist Valli Mani and junior clarinetist Harrison Gieraltowski were both selected for the All-State Symphonic Band, with senior trombonist Doug Keller chosen as an alternate. Seniors Joseph Janover (tenor II), Samantha Sampollo (alto I), Sam Sharkey (tenor II) and Alyssa Stephens (soprano II) were all selected to sing with the All-State Mixed Chorus. While participating in December at the NYSSMA Winter Conference’s AllState concerts, held at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, Gieraltowski and Mani both performed in the All-State Symphonic Band, conducted by Dr. Stephen Peterson. The ensemble rehearsed up to eight hours a day for three

days, performing extremely challenging works such as Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide.” Mani, the co-valedictorian for East Islip’s Class of 2015, was seated as second chair flute, ranking her as one of the top flutists in New York State. “Valli, Harrison and Doug are all extremely talented students, but what sets them apart from the rest and led them to be All-State musicians is their hard work, discipline and dedication,” said band director Christopher Neske. “I am so proud and humbled to be their teacher.” The four chorus students, who likewise participated at the Winter Conference, all boast impressive resumes. Janover serves as president of East Islip’s honors choir, with Stephens as vice-president; both are enrolled in AP music theory and the new Acting

for Musical Theatre class. Sampollo, the alto section leader in the honors choir, also serves as president of the school’s women’s choir and is enrolled in Acting for Musical Theatre. Sharkey serves as tenor section leader of the honors choir, and plays trumpet in East Islip’s honors wind ensemble and honors symphony orchestra. Janover, Sampollo and Stephens will all be featured in the high school’s March musical production of “West Side Story.” “All four students have not only displayed excellence in their musicianship and leadership skills but a genuine love and appreciation for music,” said Bethany Affelt, the high school’s choral and theater director. “To have four students chosen from one high school to sing with the All-State choir is truly a remarkable feat.”

Families and students from David Kennedy’s kindergarten class at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School attended the Riverhead Foundation’s first seal release of the new year on January 24th, near the Ponquogue Bridge on Dune Road in Hampton Bays. The foundation rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured marine mammals

found in Long Island waters with the hope of reintroducing them to the wild. Kennedy’s students participated in the Riverhead Foundation’s seal adoption program as a class-learning project. They adopted a yearling harbor seal named Ivy that was found near Montauk Point, suffering from a serious respiratory infection. The students read books and

stories about seals and other marine mammals, and created a bulletin board featuring their own writings and illustrations about what they learned. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the students waved goodbye to Ivy and wished her good luck as they watched her swim out into the chilly waters of Shinnecock Bay.

Students at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School kicked off two weeks of the annual Kindness and Justice Challenge with a special assembly presented by the student council on January 16th. The school wide event in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day serves to promote acts of kindness and justice

within the school and the wider community, with the assembly providing examples in the form of student-acted skits showing different acts of kindness. During the challenge, each child at RCK sets a goal of how many acts of kindness and justice they think they will be able to complete between January 16th and January 30th.

Then every day they will log the acts of kindness they have performed by writing the date and description. “The Kindness and Justice Challenge is designed to review the life and work of Dr. King and the civil rights movement,” said teacher Heather Johnson. “We want to encourage our school to perform good deeds for others.”

Story Pirates Story Pirates brought their musical sketchcomedy act to East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School on January 16th, with a humorous interactive assembly incorporating stories written by children. The troupe even performed an improvised

segment based on ideas from students in the Timber Point audience. Founded in 2003 to celebrate the words and ideas of young people, Story Pirates uses these childcreated story performances to strengthen the link between literacy and confident self-expression.

“The kids were so inspired to write after seeing stories written by other children performed on stage,” said PTA member Marianne Borruso-Gilmore, who coordinated the event. “The show was a great way to celebrate kids’ ideas.”

Researching Substance Abuse Supporting the East Islip school community’s increased focus on drug awareness, East Islip Middle School seventh- and eighth-graders conducted research on substance abuse, working both solo and in small groups and presented their findings to their peers and health teacher Chris Padgur. “We used a selection sheet of commonly abused substances to determine which group would be responsible to be the class experts on a certain topic,” explained Padgur. After reviewing drug-

specific terminology, the reasons why young adults choose to experiment with drugs and how drugs enter the bloodstream, the students spent time at the school’s library media center. Under the direction of librarian Valerie Ware, they researched their topics, exploring physical and psychological effects, common street names, how drugs enters the body, history, statistics, state and federal laws, and means of getting help for persons who are addicted. Each group or individual student then presented

their findings to their classmates, using a wide range of media including posters, movies, PowerPoint presentations, puppet shows, game show skits, song parodies and computer animations. “As each group presented, the audience filled in a drug chart to use as a resource so they have information about all of the most dangerous chemicals that young adults experiment, which have deadly consequences,” said Padgur.

Officer Of The Year

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that one of its finest was named Officer of the Year and awarded The Howard C. Stock Memorial Award at the 45th Annual Police Awards sponsored by the Southampton Town Kiwanis Club. Correction Officer Monique McCray received the top award during a ceremony held at the Atlantis Banquet Hall in Riverhead on Friday, January 23rd. Each year, fifteen East End police organizations compete for the coveted distinction, and also gather to pay tribute to exceptional officers from each agency. Officer McCray, a ten year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was selected Police Officer of the Year for her dedication to improving outcomes for incarcerated youth. She was instrumental in developing Sheriff Vincent DeMarco’s Incarcerated Youth

Initiative and has made it her mission to provide guidance, mentoring and hope to justice involved teens under her care at the Riverhead Correctional Facility. Officer McCray is also a leader in her community of Central Islip where she is a board member of the Youth Empowerment Project and a founding member of Building Bridges Uniting Communities. In addition to The Howard C. Stock Memorial Award, Officer McCray was presented with the Correction Officer of the Year Award along with Deputy Sheriff Michael Kern, who was named Deputy Sheriff of the Year during the ceremony. Officer Kern is a Drug Recognition Expert with the Sheriff’s Office and an instructor for the New York State Drug Recognition Training Program. He has taught hundreds of

officers throughout New York State in advanced policing techniques and his enforcement efforts have resulted in countless DWI and DUI arrests in Suffolk County. Deputy Sheriff Kern is a ten-year veteran of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and also served as a New York City Police Officer for seven years. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco could not be more proud of the work of Officers McCray and Kern, and stated, “Suffolk County residents are fortunate to have two of the finest public servants working on their behalf as members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. I am grateful to the members of the Kiwanis Club for paying tribute to our staff, but also for recognizing the fine work performed by highly dedicated law enforcement officers in all the East End towns.”

Boy Scout Event The Boy Scouts of America Suffolk County Council’s Trailblazer District will be holding an exciting event open to the public hosted by our very own Scout units (Packs, Troops, and Crews) on Saturday, March 7th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at SunVet Mall in Holbrook. The event will celebrate the spirit of Scouting which continues to thrive in Suffolk County. The Trailblazer Mall Show will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. with an opening parade showcasing each units flags and banners. Planned activities include a district-wide Pinewood Derby runoff, booths by the district’s units with

awards for creativity of the activity, adherence to the theme, and proper identification of the unit, chartered organization, and hometown. People are requested to bring non-perishable food items which will be donated to a local food pantry. Participants will include the Town of Brookhaven Recycling team, the Protestant Scouting Committee, Jewish Scouting Committee, members of the Holtsville Ecology Center, and Electronic Waste Recycling Inc. who will conduct an on-site e-waste collection. People are invited to bring unwanted computers and other electronics to be properly

disposed of at the event. Additional participants will be Scouter’s Reserve showcasing Scouting memorabilia, a local robotics team, and a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser will be held. Serving nearly 26,000 young people between 7 and 21 years of age, the Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council is the foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Trailblazer District, one of four Scouting districts serving Suffolk County, serves the communities on the South Shore from Connetquot to Montauk.

Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card. The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year. The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations. Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this time-tested tradition. Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing. Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery.
