Coordinator Named Dr. Robert Drysielski has been named the new social studies coordinator for the Islip School District. Prior to joining Islip, Dr. Drysielski was a middle school social studies teacher for grades 6-8 at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Manhasset from 2004-2010. He then taught social studies at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay from 20102016, serving in various roles including dean, chairperson for the social studies department and most recently, assistant principal for academics.

Dr. Drysielski, a Hempstead resident, received a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in 1999, a master’s degree for secondary education with a concentration in social studies from Hofstra University in 2003, a master’s degree for administration and supervision from Fordham University in 2009, and a doctorate in educational administration and supervision from St. John’s University in 2015. He also earned a grantwriting certificate from Molloy College as well as

an AP certificate in U.S. history. He is a member of the Long Island Council of the Social Studies, New York Council of the Social Studies and the National Council of the Social Studies, and was a member of the Middle States Accreditation team in 2005, 2009 and 2015. “The department will continue to enhance students’ knowledge through a thorough understanding of history and its implication on all future events,” said Dr. Drysielski.

As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,

some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,

“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Zachery John Goess, East Islip, New York, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on October 26th, 2016, officially making him the 70th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Zach’s Eagle Court of

Honor will be held on Tuesday, February 28th, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. Zach is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department,

under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Zach has served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and has been taking copious notes as the Troop Scribe for the past four years. Zach has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in National Boy Jamboree in 2013 at the Bechtel Summit High Adventure Base in West Virginia. He was also a summer camper for three seasons at Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains in Ft. Ann, NY and was a weekend camper for 33 campouts for a total of 88 days and nights with Troop 205 on and off Long Island, New York. These weekend campouts included Gettysburg, Harriman State Park, Southaven County Park, Indian Island County Park, Alpine Scout Camp, Ten

Mile River Scout Camp, Camp Hero at Montauk Point, Boston, West Point, Valley Forge, Delaware Water Gap canoe trip, Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, Cathedral Pines County Park, and the Trail to Eagle Camp at Baiting Hollow Scout Ca mp. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Zach has actually earned 30 merit badges. The Service Project that Zach developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in East Islip. Zach’s Eagle Project

scope of work revitalized the 9/11 Memorial Garden which entailed replacing the benches, removing all the overgrown scrubs and trees, planting new shrubs and flowers, and power washing the brick path. The materials for this project totaled nearly $2,200, in which Zach sought and successfully achieved donations and materials from local businesses, family, and friends. As Zach reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “My involvement with the Boy Scouts has led me to take part in things I may otherwise have missed, and made me a better-rounded person as a result.” Zach went on to say, “I truly believe the values contained within the Scout Oath and Laws will help me reach my goals.” Zach is a Senior at the East Islip High School, where he a member of the National Honor Society, the Science Honor

Society, the Academic Team, the Chess Club, and the Mentor Me Program. He has volunteered for the “Keep Islip Clean” (KIC) organization participated in the EJ Autism Walk/Run for the past three years and the Women’s Health Walk at Jones Beach for the last two years. Zach has also served as an intern at the Great Atlantic Shellfish Farms on the Great South Bay – part of the Oyster Gardening program. Upon high school graduation this upcoming spring, Zach plans to become a college student, studying the sciences. Zach is the son of Allison and John Goess of East Islip, and brother to Kylie. Zach’s Mother, Allison, is a member of the Troop 205 Committee and has been the successful Troop Popcorn Kernel for two years.
