Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane, Jr., wishes to remind local veterans of the many services that the Town of Islip can provide to those who have served our country. Councilman Cochrane - a Navy veteran - has spearheaded the Town’s efforts to better serve those who have protected our nation. One of the latest programs is the PFC Joseph R. Dwyer Project, a PTSD support service group aimed at helping veterans cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The program, which began in 2015, has met

with success and praise by the veteran community. “PTSD impacts many veterans returning from overseas deployments and can have a serious and detrimental effect on their lives,” said Councilman Cochrane. “This is a unique program that can make a real difference and provide support to those who have sacrificed so much.” The PFC Joseph R. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in. You could see the bright orange color of the ball. It went in and made a swooshing noise. The whole crowd cheered. My First Blizzard By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowﬂakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netﬂix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without ﬂakes was

enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a ﬂake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. I expect a big turnout for my party… and presents… and extra ﬂakes of course… Just not of the snow variety.

Today, Rohan Murphy, a professional motivational speaker and former star wrestler from East Islip High School, visited the county correctional facility in Riverhead and spoke to a group of young people participating in the Sheriff’s special Youth Tier Initiative. The event was sponsored by Eastern Suffolk BOCES, which runs the jail’s education program. Rohan, who was born with deformed legs, made a strong impression on the youth as he talked to them about how he had

Cari Roccaro, who grew up playing for the Albertson Soccer Club of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and in the Olympic Development Program of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), has been selected fifth overall by the Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Draft. Cari was Houston’s first pick of the three they had in the first round and she is reunited with her former coach at Notre Dame, Randy Waldrum, who is the Houston coach. Cari will join the team during the season after recuperating from recent hip surgery. One of her new teammates is Carli Lloyd, recently selected as FIFA Women’s Player of the Year for being the big star at the Women’s World Cup last summer. St. John’s University women’s coach Ian Stone coached Cari on ODP and explained, “Cari was a player that was way ahead of the rest of her age group, particularly from a tactical sense, in her positional versatility, and psychologically, in that she had a fierce competitiveness and showed a phenomenal amount of passion to improve.” “We all knew two things about Cari when she graduated from our

Albertson Fury program. One day, she would play professionally and another day, she would represent the US Women’s National Team at the Women’s World Cup,” commented Albertson’s Director of Coaching, Paul Riley. “She is halfway there and she thoroughly deserves everything she gets. She has all the tools of a top player: competitiveness, intelligence and skill. Houston will be her next opportunity to improve her game and with a coach like Randy (Waldrum), she will continue to develop towards her ultimate goal.” As a teenager, the East Islip resident played five years in Eastern New York ODP, three years for Region 1 ODP and five seasons for the East Islip High School girl’s varsity team, starting in the eighth grade. In the 2008 East Islip Middle School yearbook, Cari and her classmates were asked to write down what they would be in 20 years. So Cari filled in the blank with the only profession she had dreamed of since elementary school, becoming a professional soccer player. “I never thought it was actually in reach,” she said. “But as I grew up, it became so much more realistic.” With her club team, Albertson Fury ‘93, Cari won the 2009 and 2011

State Open Cup titles as well as the 2009 Region 1 championship and 2011 Region 1 Premier League division championship. She was a 2009 addition to the Long Island Fury and helped lead the team to the Women’s Premier Soccer League national championship that season plus played on the New York Fury of WPSL Elite in 2012. Both teams were coached by her youth coach, Paul Riley. “Cari’s biggest asset is her desire to be the best,” added Coach Riley. “She never accepted anything else and on the Fury, we insisted that she pushed all her limits. We are extremely proud of Cari and are convinced she will have the impact in the league like our six other graduates in the NWSL have done.” The 2011 Newsday Girls Soccer Player of the Year has experienced international success as well when the United States won the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan in 2012. Cari was the youngest starter for the USA. Playing as a midfielder and defender at Notre Dame, Cari was honored as Soccer America National Freshman of the Year and Soccer America First-Team MVP, or in other words, an All-American.

I managed to put toge ther senior busing on Wednesdays and Frida ys to start from the Primrose Lane Hous ing Complex, 65-unit senior condos, and the Wee k’s Road Apartments, a 55+ housing complex, to transport those resid en ts to the Sunset City Sh opping Plaza. This wa s necessitated by the closing of Pathmark, as these individuals, many of them seniors, now fo und themselves having to cross Deer Park Aven ue and Woods Road to get to King Kullen, th e closest food store. The Town , working with the Ch amber, has agreed to provide bus transportation on these days to facilita te shopping.
