In order to emphasize how to be proactive and kind, the Commack Road Lighthouse Committee sponsored a schoolwide activity highlighting acts of kindness on campus. Third grade students in co-teachers Shannon Dignam’s and Meghan Flynn’s class were each given a construction paper light bulb and instructed to write about “When I was Kind” or “I saw someone doing something kind.” After the lightbulbs were colored, they were hung on the class’s bulletin board to resemble strings of lights. As peers passed the Light Up the World with Kindness bulletin board, they were able to read about all kind acts by fellow students.

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

Students in East Islip High School’s French Club and Interact Club recently worked together on a “Stuff-A-Box” community service project, collecting enough winter necessities to provide 22 gifts for residents at the New Hope Rising Recovery and Wellness Center in Westhampton Beach. Each gift bag included a winter hat, gloves, socks, boxer shorts and a T-shirt. “These gifts went directly to help a very underserved population of people in recovery,” said French teacher Lauren Pinka. “A special merci beaucoup from me to the two clubs and their members.”

FRENCH STUDENTS EXPERIENCE “VAN GOGH” - Students studying French at East Islip High School recently took a field trip to experience “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience,” a digital art exhibition on the famed Dutch painter held at Pier 36 NYC. The students meandered through large rooms where Van Gogh’s works were projected on expansive wall and floors, offering a true 360-degree experience. The show was set to music that mimicked Van Gogh’s emotions throughout his life. “It was a fantastic day and this was a truly impressive exhibit,” teacher Lauren Pinka said. Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School students recently pondered how, like snowflakes, no two people are alike. The “Snow Unique” activity was sponsored by the school’s Lighthouse Committee, which tailors lessons based on Stephen Covey’s teachings about leadership and helping students become productive and kind individuals. During a lesson given by school counselor Sara Comisky, the students

described snowflakes and analyzed snowflake photos, coming to the conclusion that snowflakes have different shapes, sizes and designs. They were then asked how snowflakes and people are alike and discussed how people have unique characteristics, just like snowflakes. “I explained how all of us are special in our own unique way, and our strengths and differences are what make Commack Road Elementary School

The students were then given a snowflake with the phrase, “I am unique because… .” During the month, students have been completing their snowflake with words and pictures describing what makes each of them unique. The snowflakes are currently being hung on the bulletin board located in the school’s main hallway for the entire learning community to read.

Life’s WORC Introduces Planned Giving Program Life’s WORC (www.lifesworc. org), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, now celebrating 50 years in operation, is starting off the new year with a new Planned Giving Program. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. These include:

gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for his/ her contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s demise through his/her estate planning. Life’s WORC Board Member Ron Aghassi, a single parent of a 20-year old special needs child who lives in a Life’s WORC home noted, “When I made the decision to place my son, Jacob, in a Life’s WORC home, I felt like a great fear was released. As a single parent, even though I am not old and am in good health, I always worried what would happen to Jacob if something happened to me. Thanks to Life’s WORC, I no longer have that fear. When I made the decision to make a planned gift to Life’s WORC, and after consulting with my financial advisor, we chose the planned giving option that worked best for me. It doesn’t matter what planned giving vehicle you choose to gift. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage,

was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism. Charity watchdog groups like Charity Navigator suggest nonprofits should aspire to spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising. That can be a tall task and underscores the need for charities to find creative, costeffective ways to raise funds. Nonprofit organizations raise funds in various ways. Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving to charity tends to increase,

such as the holiday season. Activity-driven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective. What are activity-driven fundraisers? Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds. The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow

suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activitydriven fundraiser that annually attracts sizable numbers of participants and donors.
