I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after
“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to
the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

Admin of the Year Alise Becker-Santa, the recently retired assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel at East Islip School District, was honored at a December 8th board of education meeting for earning the New York State School Counselors Association’s second annual Administrator of the Year Award. The award
was originally presented at the organization’s fall conference. On hand to recognize Becker-Santa’s achievement were Dr. Robert Rotunda, the NYSSCA’s executive director; Dr. Barbara Donnellan, the NYSSCA’s past president; and East Islip Middle School guidance counselor Peter
Cabral. Her successor, Paul Manzo, presented her with an honorary East Islip diploma. “What was most important to me was having the opportunity to serve such a wonderful community over the years, and to be recognized by people I have worked so closely with,” said BeckerSanta.
East Islip’s hardworking and talented music students displayed the results of their studies at a series of six impressive winter concerts held in December at the high school’s Rydzeski Hall. During the prior months, students from the high school, middle school, and John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools practiced at home and attended numerous
rehearsals and lessons, all in preparation for their performances in front of family and friends. “Our music students demonstrated a high level of musicianship and professionalism in their winter concerts,” said Giovanna Ruggiero, the high school’s orchestra director. “They achieved this through their consistent dedication and passion for music. I am
so proud of the hard work each student displayed and I look forward to hearing continued musical growth in upcoming performances.” JFK Orchestra Director Jaime DeMaria said, “The concert was a huge success and we all can’t wait to see what these spectacular students can do in the spring.”

Paul Manzo has been named the East Islip School District’s new assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel, replacing the recently retired Alise Becker-Santa. Manzo comes to East Islip after a distinguished 14-year career at Sachem Central School District, where he served as assistant superintendent for curriculum and
instruction, assistant superintendent for administration and building administrator. Before Sachem, he worked as a building administrator for Hicksville Public Schools, a guidance counselor for Bay Shore Schools and a teacher in New York City public schools. He has been a member of the U.S. Army Reserve for 31 years. After obtaining his
bachelor’s degree in foreign language from LIU Post, Manzo earned his master’s degree in education from LIU Brooklyn and a professional diploma in educational leadership and administration from LIU Post. Manzo resides in Mount Sinai with his wife Amy, also an educator, and their three sons, Paul, Kyle and Matt. “I’m thrilled about having the opportunity to work in such a wonderful community,” said Manzo. “I look forward to collaborating with community members, staff and all stakeholders to ensure that all East Islip students receive a quality education. Who is Paying for the Increases? We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are
still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not
being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Lighthouse will present the following events: Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, February 11th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of the present-day lighthouse keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the light keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. These services may be provided to children who have or are suspected of having a disability and are eligible based on NYSED and NYSDOH guidelines for eligibility. For Early Intervention, referrals are made to the Suffolk County Department of Health. For Preschool services, refer to your local school district Committee on Preschool Special Education. All services provided for eligible children are funded through your local municipality and NYS, there is no out of pocket expense. Parents will, however, be expected to pay for the costs of any childcare. Based on an evaluation, the Municipality for Early Intervention and your District CPSE for preschool will determine the type of service, frequency, duration, location and provider of services. All treating therapists and teachers are appropriately licensed and/or certified according to the regulations of the NYSDOH and/or NYSED.
