Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Babylon Winter Senior Advocate Schedule
Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Winter 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

A 2024 New Year’s Resolution Everyone Should Make: Get A Memory Screening With a new year upon us, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is encouraging individuals to make a new year’s resolution to get a memory screening. Regular memory screenings are an important early detection tool of potential memory problems and should be part of everyone’s health and wellness routine. AFA’s National Memory Screening Program offers free, confidential memory screenings every weekday through secure videoconference technology, with no minimum age or insurance prerequisites. Appointments can be scheduled by calling AFA at 866-232-8484 or by clicking here. “Memory screenings are important for everyone, even if they are not currently experiencing memory problems. Just as with other facets of your health, early detection of potential memory issues is critically important,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Start off 2024 by making, and keeping, a new year’s resolution to get a checkup from the neck up today.” Memory screenings are simple, quick, and noninvasive, and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory and
other cognitive functions. Memory screenings are similar to other routine health screenings, such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin checks. Results are not a diagnosis of any particular condition, but a memory screening can suggest if someone should see a physician for a full evaluation. Early detection of memory impairments is extremely important. Many different conditions can cause memory issues, including treatable or curable conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, urinary tract infections, sleep apnea, stress, anxiety, and depression. Even in the case of a dementia-related illness such as Alzheimer’s, early detection can provide greater opportunity to begin treatments that can help slow the symptoms of the disease, as well as taking part in a clinical trial. In addition, it affords the person the chance to take advantage of community services, such as support groups and therapeutic programming, which can help maximize quality of life, as well as have a greater say in making legal, financial and health care decisions. “Memory screenings
empower people to be proactive about their brain health. You are never too young or too old to get a memory screening,” said Donna de Levante Raphael, PhD, Director of AFA’s National Memory Screening Program. “Detecting a memory issue early rather than later gives you more opportunity to take action, which is why everyone should get memory screenings regularly.” AFA’s National Memory Screening Program provides free, confidential memory screenings every weekday through secure videoconference technology; a smartphone, tablet, computer, or any other device with an internet connection is all that’s needed. Screenings can be provided in English or Spanish. Memory screenings are also covered by Medicare as part of the Medicare Wellness Program. Reilly East Islip St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2024, led by the parade’s Grand Marshal, Shawn O’Neill, and the Ladies Aide to the Grand Marshal, Mary Phalen. The parade will step off at 2:00 pm from the East Islip Public Library and travel west to the grandstand at St. Mary’s RC Church. A fundraiser to support the parade will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2024, from 12 PM-5 PM at Harp & Hound in Islip. A $20 donation at the door includes assorted appetizers, live music by J&D Acoustics, and a cash bar. There will also be GRAND MARSHAL SHAWN O’NEILL raffle baskets and a 50/50 raffle. Nachos Make The Ideal Game Day Snack

ame watches with fellow fans, family and friends are a great way to make playoff football even more enjoyable. With so many big games on the horizon, football fans would be wise to ready their culinary arsenal. Whether you’re hosting at home or going to a game watch at a fellow fan’s house, keep in mind that food and football are a great match. Certain dishes have long since staked their claim on the game watch dinner and snacking tables, and nachos certainly need no introduction to football fans. As this year’s playoffs kick off, football fans can try this recipe for “Loaded Beef Nachos” courtesy of AllRecipes.com.
Loaded Beef Nachos Serves 4
Taco Seasoning: 5 teaspoons paprika 1 1⁄4
teaspoons garlic powder
1 1⁄4
teaspoons ground cumin
1 1⁄4
teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon oregano leaves 1 1⁄2
teaspoons salt
Nachos:
2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound ground beef 1 cup diced green bell pepper 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles (such as RO-TEL®) 1 15-ounce can Mexican-style corn (optional) 1 16-ounce can refried beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or as needed

Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes. To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese. Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer. Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY - Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees recently participated in the nationwide Wreaths Across America Day at both Calverton National Cemetery and Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn. PSEG Long Island also donated 500 wreaths to the Calverton site for the group to use at this event in years to come. Every year on a Saturday before Christmas, PSEG Long Island employees join hundreds of other volunteers laying wreaths on military gravesites. This takes place at more than 2,500 locations across all 50 states and many U.S. territories, including Long Island’s two national cemeteries, and on working military vessels. This annual campaign honors fallen service members by laying wreaths at their gravesites for the holidays.

Wrestlers Win Second Consecutive Rocky Gilmore Classic East Islip High School’s wrestling team captured first place overall in the 36th annual Rocky Gilmore Classic, which the school hosted on Jan. 6. East Islip had 13 place winners and totaled 212.5 team points to win the tournament for the second consecutive year.
Sophomore Rocco Destefano (at 101 pounds) and senior captain Nicholas Groneman (190 pounds) both were champions in their events. Other finalists included junior Anthony LiedtkeMerida (116 pounds), freshman Gryffin Alfalla (131 pounds), sophomore
Sean O’Shea (138 pounds) and senior captain Anthony Avitabile (145 pounds). Junior Vasilios Dimou (160 pounds) finished in third place, while senior captain Dylan Aristides (131 pounds) and sophomore Christan Horeis (190 pounds) both took fourth. Finishing
in fifth place were sophomore Noah Hodge (138 pounds), junior Christopher Coleman (170 pounds), junior Chase Canfora (215 pounds) and sophomore Brian Csoban (285 pounds). “It was a great day of wrestling,” coach Michael Longobardi said.

External Diploma Program The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful
candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests.
