Fourteen fabulous string students from East Islip will participate in this year’s Long Island String Festival Association concert series. Each student was chosen By: Noelle Lambert through a rigorous Noelle@SouthBaysNeighbor.com process that included New York State School Music Association scores, January’s Charity of the Month is: teacher recommendations PBS Community Foundation and the LISFA selection The PBS Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 how funding is used to purchase needed committee. East Islip High School non-profit organization, was established to support and services. help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. They particularly focus on selfdetermination and full inclusion in the local community. Their mission is to help these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, as well as encourage long-term planning and to support efforts towards establishing social connections and friendships in the community. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to selfdirect their services. As of September 30, 2018, there were 2,926 individuals enrolled in ‘Self Direction’ on Long Island. (Source: NYS OPWDD) Self-Direction is a person-centered approach that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to create a life plan with supports that they chose, based on their unique strengths, needs and goals. It also gives the individual more control over

While the number of individuals choosing to self direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks. The PBS Community Foundation initiatives started with Big Time Glee, a singing group that now meets twice a month in Smithtown. This group performs at various events such as Long Island Ducks games! In response to numerous requests from the Self-Directed community, the Foundation created a similar group in Nassau, which meets monthly in Bellmore. This is called the Nassau Voice. Aditionally, another initative, The Crafting Connection, meets every other week to work on different crafty projects or just to socialize and play games. More recently, Self-Directed individuals are focusing on the health of their mind and body. The PBS Community Foundation offers Yoga Without Boundaries twice a month at the Yoga Darshana Center in West Babylon. This center generously donates the space and Dan Elfawal, a certified special educator and yoga instructor, leads a free yoga class open to individuals with all abilities. Dan says the students walk away focused, calm and self confident. Through the practice of yoga, students build strength and develop coping skills, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle. The Maurer Foundation is a local non-profit organization. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education and they focus on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. This foundation is holding their 10th Annual Bowling Fundraiser, Pink Bowl, on Sunday, February 10th from 11:30AM-1:30PM at Bowlmor Lanes in Melville. Joseph Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019, starting at 11:00AM at the Timber Point Elementary

School, 200 Timber Point Road, East Islip, NY 11730. Joseph is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Joseph has served Troop 205 as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Patrols, Bugler, Chaplain’s Aide, and, Troop Guide – where he has assisted his younger Scouts in their Rank Advancements. As Joseph reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Scouting has introduced me to leadership. At a young age, Boy Scouts provides valuable leadership positions, which is great experience. I have learned the important components of being a good leader

through Scouting.” Joseph went on to say, “Setting a good example and communications are traits that every good leader has.” Joseph is currently a senior at East Islip High School, East Islip, New York, where he has been on the academic honor roll since the ninth grade and a member of the East Islip High School Foreign Language Honor Society and the East Islip Boy’s Leaders Club. Let’s Take In Some Culture This Weekend “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life.” - Unknown When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit? I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything. I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the

week ahead, we can sometimes lose sight of the opportunity that each weekend holds for us. As I edit the Coming Events Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible. When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night. Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s

comb through What’s Happening Around Town in South Bay’s Neighbor as well as other local Long Island newspapers. Look at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town. Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two. Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too. East Islip Drama Club Inducing raucous laughter from the audience each night, the East Islip High School Drama Club recently performed a hilarious full-length play, Ken Ludwig’s “Lend Me a Tenor,” over two terrific evenings on the middle school stage. This year’s production featured eight students. In the leading roles of Max and Maggie were sophomore Andrew Timmins and senior Karina Gallagher. The roles of Italian couple Tito and

Maria Merelli were played by junior Luke Ferrari and senior Alex Bertolini, while sophomore Kieran Tohill played the comic role of Saunders. Rounding out the supporting cast were Jenni Profera as Diana and Katie Spina as Julia, while Connor Barnes brought down the house with his uniquely amusing interpretation of the Bellhop. “I was extremely pleased with the turnout and proud of all of the students who were involved,” said

Drama Club director Bethany Affelt. “The level of professionalism, comic timing and instincts, and overall talent of the actors was simply amazing. These students really raised the bar for future straight plays in East Islip. According to Kim Forrest, the editor of WeddingWire, an online marketplace for wedding-related items, strapless dresses are the standard for wedding attire, and that trend is unlikely to change anytime soon. Style Directors for Martha Stewart Weddings agree, saying that roughly 75 percent of wedding dresses are strapless, although some alternative necklines are starting to become more popular. With so much attention directed their way, brides might look for ways to tone their upper bodies for the big day.

Arm, chest, and shoulder-toning exercises can be part of a strong fitness regimen. The upper arms and the shoulders have no fewer than nine primary muscles that will need firming for brides to make an impact while walking down the aisle. Tame flabby areas with exercise. According to the University of Connecticut, the upper arms are a part of the female body

where fat tends to store, along with the hips and thighs. Toning this area may take a combination of diet and exercise. Begin with the biceps, which are the front muscles of the arms directly above the elbows. Biceps are one of the stronger arm muscles, and bicep curls can help strengthen biceps further. Shape magazine suggests performing 12 repetitions of three hand positions, palms up, palms down and thumbs to the side, to really work this area. The triceps are a single muscle that has three sections, according to Fitness Magazine. Doing triceps kick-backs, bench dips and triangle push-ups can really activate these muscles and cause them to become stronger and more toned. Strengthening and elongating shoulder muscles may take a combination of exercises that work not only the deltoids (muscles surrounding the shoulders), but the chest and back as well. Arm raises, both with arms extended to the side and in front of the body, can work these areas well. Brides who want to tone up can speak with a ﬁtness instructor at a nearby gym to learn various ways to ﬁrm their arms, chests and backs in advance of their wedding days.

party, and not separate parties for each side. Couples are increasingly deviating from tradition for their weddings by looking beyond gender when picking wedding party members. In a recent story on TheKnot, written by Carrie Anton, wedding planner Alex Chalk stated that with abandoning traditional gender roles in wedding parties, brides or grooms “get to be surrounded by the ones you want by your side,” regardless of gender. Supposing the brides closest friend and conﬁdante happens to be male, or the groom’s closest pal just happens to be female? It’s becoming more and more accepted to bestow bridal party designations as the bride and groom so desire. The article goes on to state that these modern bridal party roles obviously require new name designations, hence bridesman or groomsmaid. But let’s not forget the anticipated special designations of bride’s best man or groom of honor. Red Ribbon Contest Winners Principal Janet Jones. Back in October, the high school’s SADD Club visited the district’s fifth-grade classes to share important anti-drug messages as part of the Red Ribbon program. The SADD members also ran the slogan contest and presented skits to help younger students learn how to respond to bullying and drugs. In return, the fifthgraders wrote letters to all of the graduating seniors, reminding them to make good decisions during

prom and graduation as well as wishing them well in their life journey after high school. “This program is so important because these 11-year-old students are at an age statistically that drug and alcohol abuse starts,” said Bridget Lopiccolo, the SADD Club’s adviser. “We need to get to them early and teach them that life is about choices and making the right ones.”

American Sign Language For the past three years, seniors in Jovina Bratta’s American Sign Language class at East Islip High School have visited Christine Cirillo’s fourthgrade students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in December for a special “sign-along.” “It is such a great experience for both the younger and older kids,” said Bratta. “This activity not only spreads some

knowledge to the younger kids about the American Sign Language program that is offered at the high school, but it is also a wonderful experience for the seniors who are interested in working with children in their future careers.” For this year’s event, the ASL seniors signed popular holiday songs and taught the elementary schoolers “Santa Claus Is Coming

to Town.” The fourthgraders returned the favor by signing “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” as well as the alphabet and fun vocabulary words. “Mrs. Cirillo teaches her students ASL throughout the year, so this is a special treat for them to be able to sign with the older kids and show us what they know,” said Bratta.
