Creative Cups To Return On March 19th at Adelphi University in Garden City, 178 original works of art will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program. These pieces are “Creative Cups” - ordinary bras that have been turned into folk art. The inspirations for the Creative Cups are many. Artist Richard Vaux of Lloyd Neck evoked autumn with his design “Wishful Landscape II.” Girl Scouts from Troop 3648 in Farmingdale made “Girl Scout Cookies” to honor the memory of Girl Scout Founder Juliet Gordon Lowe, who died from breast cancer. Breast cancer survivor Joan Leondis of Garden City used many jewels for her “Life Is Precious.” The amazing “Bra-alicious” by Dave Jones of East Meadow is made of welded spoons and chains.

These and 174 other Creative Cups will be auctioned on Thursday, March 19th, at 6 p.m. at Adelphi University’s University Center in Garden City. NBC’s Pat Battle, a breast cancer survivor herself, again will host the event. To date, chief sponsors are Leviton Foundation and Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. Tickets are $50 ($65 for day of event walk-ins) and can be purchased on-line: www.adelphi.edu/creativecups. Call the hotline at 1.800.877.8077 for information.

Keep Islip Clean marked its 25th Anniversary in December with a celebration hosted by the Seatuck Environmental Association at the historic Scully Estate in Islip. Over 125 volunteers and supporters toasted KIC’s quarter century of keeping every hamlet in the Town of Islip clean, green and litter-free. Former Chairman Bill Johnston and his wife Gloria were presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for over 20 years of service, by

KIC’s incoming Chairman, Kay Erwood. In addition to Mrs. Erwood, other Executive Board officers were sworn in by Judge Lawrence Donohue (retired). The evening was a success thanks to the generosity of KIC’s anniversary year sponsor North ShoreLIJ Southside Hospital, Seatuck Environmental Association, Evergreen Island Caterers, Habberstad BMW, Kohl’s Associates in Action and Caroline’s Flower Shoppe.

Perhaps the most popular feature of the evening was the ten dozen cupcakes baked by the students of the East Islip High School Culinary Academy. KIC begins its next 25 years with a card recycling drive. Any occasion cards can be dropped off at the KIC office, 660 Main Street, Islip until February 28th. Cards will be refashioned and sold by St. Jude’s Ranch for Children to support its programs. Call 631.224.2627 for further details.

Spelling Bee Triumph

East Islip Middle School eighth-grader Victoria Keenan triumphed in the annual school wide spelling bee for the second year in a row, beating fellow eight-grade student Julia Desiderio with the word “nebula” after numerous nail-biting final rounds. Emma McGaugh finished

in third place. The 26-round event, which included 42 participants, was the qualifying round for the local edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, with students competing to represent East Islip at the local edition of the national bee, to be held on February

8th at Hofstra University. “The spelling bee was action-packed this year,” said English teacher Ann Mingione. “Our classroom winners successfully spelled a multitude of challenging words and we congratulate all of the participants.”

birthday, but BSA rules allow for exceptions under certain developmental circumstances. “Jimmy is the quintessential Eagle,” said Legislator Tom Cilmi. “His perseverance and commitment, despite a number of significant challenges, sets an example for all of us. It would have been so easy to give up, but he stuck with it. His

fellow scouts all had the same thing to say, ‘Jimmy is always there to lend a helping hand or offer advice.’ I am incredibly proud of Jim and want to thank all those who have helped him, particularly his fellow Troop 207 scouts and scoutmasters without whom this would not be possible.”

Honor Flight Support The East Islip Middle School Builders Club, guided by teacher Rena Costello, participated in a recent special event honoring World War II veterans who took part in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. last September. These patriotic students helped distribute photo scrapbooks that were created and customized

for each veteran from the September flight. Phil Bates, a member of the Honor Flight Long Island Board of Directors, organized the Honor Flight reunion event, whose audience was comprised of the aforementioned veterans, their families and the guardians who had escorted them on the Honor Flight, as well as prior Honor Flight attendees.

East Islip’s Superintendent Linda J. Rozzi was also in attendance Bates’ wife, Tina, brought along her Girl Scouts Cadette Troop 2137, who hosted the welcome table, while two other members of the Builders Club, Jacob Arens and Lucas Bates, manned the refreshment table.

Think Sunshine!

Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled skies or swimming for the first time. Join volunteer host families in and around Western Suffolk, for our 139th summer, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child! Each summer, close to 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. “It’s a small thing that has a huge impact on a

child that doesn’t get to experience life outside of the city. Fresh Air children get to enjoy things that our kids take for granted and by opening your home, you’re showing a child something that they may not have the opportunity to see otherwise,” says host mom, Jennifer. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York

City. Children on firsttime visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child this summer, please contact Pamela Desmond at 631.786.1915 or visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www.freshair.org.

The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Changes By: Alexandra H. Rodrigues

It’s gone, it’s gone What have I done. It had been with me for five decades Seen many of my escapades. It once carried coins from all over the World Also various true gold charms it hurled. It was not new when I picked it up in Rome To give Pope Paul, set in a star, a home.

A men’s pocket watch chain it once had been Aristocratic flair it must have seen. Gold always as valuable has been praised With time it rose in the market place. My neck once pretty and worth to be shown Is now a skin scape all of its own. No necklace it needs anymore. That is why my attachment I tore.

For the money I got I bought what really now hits the spot. Fancy, warm Norwegian boots And a cupboard full of specialty foods. As change comes with the different stages of life To adapt to my material assets I strive. For a minute the parting had saddened my moods But I delight in some caviar and flaunt my boots. Change is healthy they say So I have it my way I had fun at my latest shopping spree I adjust quite fast, you see.

(NAPSI)—If living a healthier life is your cup of tea, you may be interested in an easy way to improve your health—using the natural antioxidant powers of tea. Almost half of all Americans are overweight and have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Heart attacks are still the No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than it used to be only a few years ago. This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example,

heart-healthy products such as TeaFlavin, an all-natural, caffeine-free capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea. For more information

on TeaFlavin, visit www. teaflavin.com or call (800) 876-4332. Light Travels Unlike other light, which scatters, laser light travels in only one direction.

Splashes Of Hope Recently, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center was the recipient of Splashes of Hope therapeutic murals commissioned by local philanthropist and Good Samaritan Benefactor Theresa Patnode Santmann. Splashes of Hope is a non-profit organization that creates artwork in medical settings as tools for pain management, therapeutic distraction,

soothing visualization, and focal points during necessary procedures. The murals are located in the hallway and family waiting room of the open heart surgery unit, in the waiting room of the Theresa Patnode Santmann Center for Cardiovascular Services, and in the hallway leading to the Catheterization Labs. The newly “Splashed” suite at Good Samaritan

Hospital will bring smiles to the faces of patients, staff and visitors.

Know Your Home’s Value (NAPSI)—Whether you’re thinking of buying, selling, remodeling or just wondering about the value of your home, you need to know local market conditions—the picture may be brighter than you

thought. To help, the home and real estate experts at Hanley Wood Market Intelligence have a new tool. Visit www. builderonline.com, click the blue Local Housing Data tab, enter your zip

code, and you’ll see graphs and charts depicting values for your local market. Jonathan Smoke, executive director of research for Hanley Wood, says, “Healthy markets have the following traits:

a growing job market, favorable demographic trends, a diverse and educated workforce, subsiding foreclosure activity, and positive quality of life factors.” For remodeling, see how

to maximize your return on investment at www. costvsvalue.com. According to Remodeling magazine, the three projects with the highest return this year are fiber cement siding, entry

door replacement, and attic bedroom remodel. Visit www.costvsvalue.com to see 32 more remodeling projects and their worth at resale.

sponsored the Long Island Regional FRC for the past sixteen years. “This proves to be an exciting time for the students and the mentors when they learn the name and the rules of the game for this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition,” said Deb Winter, FRC Director, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “We were very proud to present the FRC kickoff as we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Regional FRC in March.” During the 2015 season, 50 teams from Long Island, New York City, and the surrounding areas; Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Israel; and the Republic of Brazil will convene at Hofstra University for the Long Island Regional

FRC on March 26th-28th, culminating with the 2014 FIRST Championship on April 22nd-25th at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. “The next six weeks will be crucial for these students as they design and construct their robots for this competition,” said Ms. Winter. “The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition showcases the talents of these students who learn not only the basic technological aspects of building their robots, but also about other concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and gracious professionalism.” For more information, visit http://www.sbpli.org.

Recycle Rush More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New Yorkarea schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 3rd for School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc.’s (SBPLI) kickoff of the Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2015 robotics game called “RECYCLE RUSHSM.” “FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST

Founder. “Kids often come in not knowing what to expect — of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future.” RECYCLE RUSHSM is a recycling-themed game played by two Alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season. In addition, SBPLI

held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. SBPLI representatives, team mentors, volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program. After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made

up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components - and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 26th28th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored by SBPLI, which has also
