Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Elizabeth Balsamo, a fourth grader in Meghan Flynn and Christine LeMaire’s class at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, recently organized the school’s second annual toy drive. “One morning in early November, she enthusiastically came to school to talk to the principal about the drive,” said LeMaire. “She had the
idea last year as a third grader, after becoming concerned about children who were sick in the hospital at holidays. Balsamo designed a flyer for the initiative and made daily announcements. Her family helped her connect with Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip to send toys directly via Amazon. Toys were also donated to the John Theissen Children’s
Foundation. “Elizabeth is a natural leader at Commack Road,” said Principal James Cameron. “Her example shows us that when given the chance to lead, kids can make a real difference,” “I feel really proud and thankful for all of the help I received from my teachers, Mr. Cameron and everyone who donated,” said Balsamo.

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and
furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. If you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority. Lastly, every Saturday until further notice, Angels of Long Island will team up with Carroll’s Kitchen, another Long Island based non-profit. Together they will be handing out gourmet to-go meals for free to anyone who stops by the Angels’ Patchogue store when the meals are available (please visit the Angels of Long Island Facebook page for meal arrival updates). Anyone is welcome to come and let a team member know how many dinners you need. The meals are distributed via curbside pickup. “So many people are out of work,” says Debbie. “If we can help their budget a ltitle by providing a meal for their family, it thrills me!” I personally would like to thank both nonprofit organizations for making a difference on our island, touching the hearts of those in need and having a smile on your faces while doing so! “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Proverbs 19:17

According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is a protein
in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will be
asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood cells to replace the ones
that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

East Islip High School student Isabella Avitable was recently selected for the 2021 National Art Honor Society/National Junior Art Honor Society Juried Exhibition, held annually by the National Art Education Association. Avitable’s piece, “Lavender Hotel Room,” was one of only 93
works chosen out of 1,187 submissions. Representatives from eight member schools of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design participated as jurors for the NAHS/ NJAHS . In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NAEA has transitioned to a completely virtual
exhibition, which opens on Jan. 11. “It’s such an honor to be chosen and represent the East Islip National Art Honor Society,” said Avitable. “I chose to create this piece because I’m into interior design and I want to pursue that for college.”

Despite rain and cold, East Islip Middle School’s Girls Leaders Club successfully hosted its first Drive-By Holiday Food Drive on Dec. 12. After providing for families within the middle school community, the remaining donations were taken to St. Peter the Apostle Church in Islip Terrace. “I was very happy with the amount of donations we received,” said teacher and Girls Leaders Club adviser Laura O’Donnell. “It was ideal for the donors, considering COVID-19 and the rain. Community
members drove up, the girls unloaded the bags and off they went.” The Girls Leaders Club runs several annual fundraising and community service initiatives, but this year’s activities look a bit different. O’Donnell had a goal to keep the club running as usual this year, regardless of the pandemic. “I expected there would be some challenges this year with operating the club virtually and the limitations on fundraising and community service activities due to
COVID-19,” she said. “I also know the importance of the club to the students that participate and the community members that benefit from their hard work and dedication. It is at times like now that community service clubs are most needed”. During this school year, the Girls Leaders Club also conducted a fundraiser for UNICEF and a Holiday Pet Toy and Food Drive for the Islip Animal Shelter. The club’s plans for 2021 include Valentine’s Day cards for veterans and care packages for the homeless.
