Easing Into The New Year By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Two weeks into the New Year, how are we all doing on those resolutions? Have we started the intense diet/ exercise regimens, cleaned our homes from top to bottom, blown through our many “To Do” lists and set out on our quest for the meaning of life? No? Too soon? Still easing into it? It’s okay, take your time. There are still eleven and a half months remaining to whip everything into shape – your body, home, mind and beyond – so no worries. Those resolutions will be there for as long

as you choose to pursue them. And, contrary to popular belief, they don’t even need to be set on January 1st. Any day, any time, no expiration needed to accomplish your everchanging goals. Imagine that. January, for me, has always been somewhat of a time for hibernation – of settling in, catching up on some reading (that pile of Rolling Stone Magazines just keeps on growing), TV viewing (there was a reason I subscribed to Netflix all those months ago, wasn’t there?), movies (because we all know what quality cinema is released in the

dead of winter) and, when all else fails, curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a batch of freshly baked (or burned, as the case may be) chocolate chip cookies on the couch. The To Do lists, they’ll eventually get done – either by crossing each task off one by one, or by erasing the less desirables, moving them to another, less urgent column… say, “To Do: Sometime Next Year” … Bundle up, hunker down and enjoy the winter while it’s here. It’s as good an excuse to vegetate as you’ll have for a while.

Showcasing the rising talents of East Islip’s youngest music students and instilling holiday spirit, all four of the district’s elementary schools – Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point – presented outstanding winter concerts during December. Frigid outside temperatures had little effect on the audiences who were warmed by the beautiful seasonal music performed by the various band, orchestra and choral ensembles. Highlights of the RCK and Timber Point band performances, both led by director Lynda Maniscalco, included Frosty The Snowman and the lovely Dona Nobis Pacem, also known as Canon of Peace. RCK’s chorus, directed by Margaret Strzelecka, treated the December 3rd crowd to versions of The Three O’Clock Rehearsal by Ruth Roberts and Bill

Katz, Shalom by Teresa Jennings, and Christmas Dreams by Don Besig and Nancy Price. At Timber Point’s concert on December 16th, the young singers began with the traditional Israeli folk song Kum Bahur (Awake and Start the Day) sung in Hebrew, followed by Sing with Joy, Sing Noel, a 14th-century German carol performed in both Latin and English with metallophone and percussion accompaniment. Closing the Timber Point choral program, which was directed by Kathy Carter, was A New Year’s Wish, which incorporated Scottish poet Robert Burns’ Auld Lang Syne for an end-of-the-year salute. “I am tremendously proud of all the hard work and time that the chorus students devoted to preparing for the concert in the past few months,” said Carter. “It certainly

showed in an excellent performance.” The RCK and Timber Point orchestras both wowed audiences with colorful renditions of “International Jingle Bells,” played in a variety of world cultural styles and accented with costumes. “The orchestra students traveled through the world with style during that performance,” said Jaime DeMaria, the school’s orchestra director. “I couldn’t be more proud of their energy and overall talent.” “My advanced orchestra students played so beautifully at our winter concert,” added Angela Stewart, RCK’s orchestra director. “I really enjoyed our musical journey to all of the different countries and look forward to another amazing concert in the springtime.”

STARS SHINE - This holiday season, members of the East Islip High School STARS club joined forces with Christmas Magic, a local nonprofit organization founded in 1990 to provide holiday generosity and spirit to those less fortunate. STARS students volunteered to shop and wrap gifts for underprivileged children using the latter’s personalized wish lists.

There came no chirping from the birds, And from the radio, there came no words. Through my body ran a strange sensation, I went outside to cure my temptation, But to my surprise, this was no imagination, This whole damn world was in a state of ruination. I stood there for hours, feeling so strange, Those buildings that I once knew, were now rearranged. The cold war had come, and the cold war had passed, And the morning of destruction, was here at last. I couldn’t feel love, I couldn’t feel pity, But I knew one thing, there was no more city. As I walked through the streets of trash, and rubble, In the far away distance, a mushroom shaped bubble, The final end to all that past trouble. And yesterday, the grass was so green, And the people, and places, and all was serene, And my younger brother would have turned sixteen. And yesterday, as I was up there flying, The big three, the UN, one was lying, Contemplating for today how the people would be dying. And now the radiation is coming towards me, and I’ll just wait, and I won’t resist, For when you know you’ll never again be kissed, what good is it for you to exist.

While the event was free, a donation of a box of crayons or coloring book for charity was the “price” of admission. “The students of the middle school were so generous,” she said, “especially when they knew that these supplies were going to be delivered to sick children in surrounding hospitals.” In addition to the “Elf” charity event, the Tri-M

Music Honor Society provided public music performances at a number of local events and venues in recent months, including the East Islip Fire Department Tree Lighting ceremony, the Momentum at South Bay nursing home and all of the elementary schools in the district. “Mrs. Fischer and I are so proud of these students,” said Stevens. “They are all so dedicated and motivated to help others, spread some cheer and share their wonderful musical talents.”

East Islip High School’s wrestling team grappled its way to a remarkable victory at the David Bloom Memorial Duals on December 21st. The East Islip wrestlers beat host Wantagh by a score of 42-31, ending the

two-time defending New York State champions’ 44-match dual meet winning streak. The Redmen won their last four matches after trailing 31-25. All-County athlete Jesse Dellavecchia earned a 16-1

technical fall to defeat Wantagh’s Joe Conklin in the 120-pound class. Other top bouts included Dennis Ferro (160 pounds) beating Nick Vines, 12-4, and football star Erik Adon decisioning Nick DeVito in a 182-pound match.

East Islip High School sophomore Kierstin O’Hara was honored as the 2013-2014 winner of the school’s prestigious Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award. She will represent East Islip at this year’s HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar, a

three-day conference held from June 27th-29th at Adelphi University in Garden City. Founded by civicminded actor Hugh O’Brian in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire a global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs such as the seminar at Adelphi provide selected students with unique leadership training and motivationbuilding experiences. HOBY’s Leadership award, open only to 10th-graders, recognizes students who exhibit strong leadership skills

and extensive participation in community service. For East Islip’s contest, O’Hara wrote an essay explaining how she built a bat house to help balance the ecosystem, which was also her project for her Girl Scout Silver Award. “It’s an honor to be chosen for such a great award,” said O’Hara, who is looking forward to attending the HOBY conference at Adelphi. “I’m excited to attend and meet other community leaders.” “We congratulate Kiersten and know she will make East Islip proud,” added her guidance counselor, Jennifer Salvaggio.

East Islip High School students from Sabina Uettwiller and Margaret Gallagher’s career development class recently took a field trip to the historic Fire Island Lighthouse, where they learned about the history of the lighthouse – which

began operation in 1858 and is run and maintained by the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society – as well as the environment surrounding it. The students also had the opportunity to climb 182 steps to the top for a splendid view of Fire Island

and the Great South Bay. “It was both an educational and enjoyable trip for all,” said Uettwiller. Following the field trip, the students worked with art teacher Heather Toomey to create their own images of the lighthouse.

Community Health Partnership combine their expertise in a streamlined and cooperative effort to reach all Long Islanders and help them achieve improved health. The website is a component of their work. The userfriendly site provides Long Islanders with comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention information at their fingertips. It’s a portal connecting Long Islanders to clinical and social service supports that will get them well or keep them well. The LIHC is one of the few collaborative groups in the state of New York featuring a partnership between two neighboring counties and is the first time that Nassau and Suffolk counties are partnering in such a comprehensive way. Public health and public affairs experts from the region’s hospitals, as well as health department leaders and representatives from social service organizations and public health specialists from colleges, comprise the collaborative. The group initially

formed in February 2013 in response to enhanced state and federal government regulations that require all health care providers, local health departments, and community-based service organizations to work together to assure and improve health in communities they serve. It has now moved beyond these mandates and stands as a fully integrated model of health and social service for all of Long Island’s communities. More specifically, the state’s Prevention Agenda 2013 – 2017 mandate asked local county health departments, hospitals, community-based organizations, schools and other regional partners to join together to address unmet health needs in communities. LIHC performed that task in early 2013 and uncovered unmet needs in the areas of chronic disease prevention and management, especially related to obesity, as well as a great need for more mental health/substance abuse prevention and treatment services. As a

result, LIHC’s efforts will focus on these priorities. LIHC’s ultimate goal is the management of population health, which is really the steadfast coordination and integration of all clinical and social services that assist each and every Long Islander in becoming well and/or staying well. Health

care providers - hospitals, doctors, laboratory service providers, nutritionists and social service providers of all types work together to provide coordinated health care. The website – http://nshc. hanys.org/long-islandhealth-collaborative/ - is just the first step in achieving this goal. A

bi-county walk effort to promote physical activity and that will reveal broad data about health and habits of Long Islanders is also planned, along with health and builtenvironment policy changes at the local level.

WINTER TRACK HEATS UP - While temperatures outside have plummeted, the East Islip High School boys winter track team has been heating it up inside, competing successfully last month in an indoor meet at the Brentwood campus of Suffolk County Community College. While early in the season, the team is off to a strong start with many new faces and several returning veterans, aided by strong tutelage and a positive attitude from new track coach Ralph Tubello, who handles everything from sprints and distance running to high jumps and relays.

An innovative community health and planning initiative – one that is ground-breaking for the Long Island region – officially gets underway this Friday, January 10th, 2014, at 10 a.m. That is when the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) – a bi-county effort to help Long Islanders improve their health – and the collaborative’s website debut at the offices of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) in Hauppauge. Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New York, will “flip the switch” and officially launch the LIHC and its website. NSHC is the agency that represents Long Islands’ hospitals and is the coordinating entity for LIHC. The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is comprised of all Long Island’s hospitals, the Nassau and Suffolk County Health Departments, dozens of communitybased organizations, and academic institutions.
