The Catholic School Difference Although not part of the survey, the dramatically different results are cause for some speculation about ‘why’? Why would almost twice as many students from Catholic schools achieve their degree? While national

Catholic school academic results regularly exceed their public counterparts by enough to claim some academic advantages… Catholic schools don’t have twice-as-much information to impart to their students. That pretty much leaves character development, study habits and self-confidence, all intended by-products of a Catholic education, as the likely causes. In Catholic school, from elementary school forward, the goal is to educate the whole child, in mind, in body and in spirit. If the results of this study are any gauge… It’s working!

of degree-recipients varied significantly by the type of high school attended, with 31.1 percent of public school sophomores reaching a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 61.9 percent of sophomores from Catholic high schools and 57.1 percent of those from other private high schools. The College Degree Is Just The Start Of The Advantages The survey went on to document subsequent advantages of higher salaries and lower unemployment. Students who didn’t seek or attain a degree in the 10 years of the survey faced an unemployment rate of 17 percent in 2012, with an additional 10 percent saying they were out of the labor force entirely (i.e., not looking for work). By contrast, only 4 percent of students who were able to attain a bachelor’s degree said they were unemployed. The students who

According to a report released in January, 2014, by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), students graduating from Catholic high schools were nearly twice as likely as their public school counterparts to receive their college degree. In turn, degree recipients were ultimately more successful in securing a job and realizing higher earnings. A National Center For Educational Statistics Study The study, reported on in the February issue of the CAPE Outlook newsletter from the Council for American Public Education, identified 10th grade students from public, private and Catholic high schools in 2002 to participate in the study. Ten years later, in 2012, the study re-visited with those same students. By 2012 the students were in their midtwenties. The percentage

(Un)Deck The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it just me, or is the process of “un-decking” the halls one of the least wonderful times of the year? After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over. Just like that. As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree

to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store. ‘Tis the season, indeed. I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking. And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did

when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space. Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now. Perhaps a few Christmas tunes and twinkling lights would make this mundane process more festive.

I am also shocked by the idea that my brother is already learning how to drive. I have fond memories of the two of us playing catch on the front lawn. With 2015 in full swing, I’ve began to fully appreciate how fast life moves. Just months ago, I was still in high school. In one semester, I’ll be a quarter of the way done with my college experience. It seems crazy to think that in a very short time, I’ll be on my own, starting the next chapter of my life. The other day, while out to dinner, my family and I started reminiscing about memories from my early childhood. I was shocked to hear how long ago we had moved out of our first house. It seemed like just yesterday, even though it was fifteen years ago. I can still remember sitting in my race car bed and trying to figure out a way to crawl out of my room, down the stairs and into my parents room. I was so young, yet I can remember the memory vividly.

A fresh start to celebrate the New Year, the Jaramillo-Marquez family joined Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk to celebrate the beginning of construction on their future home in Bellport. Demolition crews led the efforts, removing the previous abandoned, uninhabitable structure and preparing the land for the affordable home build. “It is extremely gratifying to see another derelict property removed from the North Bellport community,” stated Legislator Kate Browning. “Working in conjunction with the Town of Brookhaven and Habitat for Humanity we have kept dozens of properties from being auctioned off to speculators, and instead have helped families to become homeowners.” The property was transferred to Habitat Suffolk by way of legislation from Suffolk County to the Town of Brookhaven and through a partnership and support of Brookhaven

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck announced that it is once again offering its weekend respite program for the first five months of 2015, transforming the 60-plus year-old camp into a year-round destination for children and young adults with disabilities. Children and young adults up to the age of 21 arrive on Friday evening and leave on Sunday afternoon. There is a new theme each weekend. Campers can participate in various activities, including baking, arts and crafts, games, and watching movies. Fine Arts and proudly walked away with a $250 scholarship to attend advanced art classes at the Greenlawn Art School. HFA’s scholarship competition provides

freshmen, sophomore and junior students on Long Island with the opportunity to draw the live figure. “This life drawing technique and process is challenging, but essential for further collegiate study in fine arts,” said Figliozzi. “I honestly really loved it,” Dondero said. “The institute itself was amazing in person and the contest turned out to be a lot less nerve-racking then I initially thought it would be. I learned a lot about how I draw, how others draw and how unique and diverse everyone could be when creating art.” Dondero plans on continuing to broaden his practice by taking courses such as AP art, electronic illustration and Drawing 2 in the coming years at East Islip. He plans to use the scholarship money to take drawing and painting classes at Huntington Fine Arts.

Oquenock’s fifth graders have been busy learning about helping others during this holiday season. The students worked to raise money for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. This charity collects toys to distribute to sick and

underprivileged children across Long Island. The students sold Smencils and personalized winter ornaments, which were displayed in the main hallway at Oquenock. On December 10th, John Theissen went to Oquenock and spoke to the students

about his experience as a sick teenager and how that encouraged him to want to help other children. The students presented him with $857. The students are proud for helping other children in need.
