Irene Cummings Turns 100 Years Young Irene Cummings has seen a lot in her 100 years on this blue marble. Cummings, who was born New Year’s Day, 1922, enjoyed a long marriage to Edward Cummings and together they raised three daughters and four sons. Brooklynite Irene, who was working as a telephone operator for The New York Telephone Company in Manhattan, met Edward through his oldest brother, who thought they’d be a good match. Joe was right, as Irene and Edward, who married in 1943, were happily married for 63 years. Edward, a former U.S. Marine, also was a retired New York City Police officer. Irene, who for many years was a stayat-home mom, often joked that she couldn’t have raised four sons if she hadn’t had three daughters first, remembers youngest daughter Barbara Ruggiero of East Islip. Irene never learned to drive, so Edward would drive her to work before they married and acted as her chauffeur throughout their marriage. After retiring from the Police Department, he went to work for Pan Am and that’s when the family became world travelers, thanks to his job perk of free airline tickets for the whole family. “We all flew for free,” Ruggiero says. Irene and Edward saw a lot of the world and were particularly fond of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Spain, Majorca and Russia, which they visited multiple times. In fact, they were among the first to visit Russia when it reopened to the world. It was their goal to see as much of the world as they could. In between taking to the air, Irene worked at a children’s clothing store. Edward often said she took her paycheck in clothing, bringing home gifts for her 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
“They were the most beautiful clothing,” Ruggiero remembers. “But Dad never complained about taking her to work and picking her up. They had a great relationship. I remember her saying they were such good friends.” The two eventually moved to Sarasota, Fla., where they lived for 18 years until Edward became sick with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The children, who all lived in New York, asked them to come back North so the children could assist with his care. He died in 2006. Irene lived on her own until two years ago when walking became an issue after an adverse reaction to some medicine she was taking. She now is a long-term care patient at Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation and Nursing in East Islip. Ruggiero says part of her mom’s secret to longevity is likely that she doesn’t worry much and never did.
“I remember when we’d go on vacation out to Shelter Island and some of us kids would go out on a boat all day and all she’d say is be home in time for dinner,” Ruggiero says. “That was one of the few things she was a stickler about, that we all ate meals together.”

United States Navy Blue Angels To Headline 18th Annual Bethpage Air Show Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are very pleased to announce that the United States Navy Blue Angels will headline the 18th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 28, 2022 and Sunday, May 29, 2022. It was also announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention today that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds and the F-22
Raptor with be performing. “We are thrilled to welcome the United States Navy Blue Angels back to Long Island in 2022,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. “The last time the Blues performed on Long Island was in 2018 as the 2020 show was cancelled due to the pandemic. Planning for the show has already begun and with two jet teams performing, two native New Yorkers on the Blue Angels’ team, and a host of other noted pilots on board, this year’s show is going to be spectacular!”
“Bethpage is very proud to be a part of this special air show that has grown to become one of the most beloved air shows in the country,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “The addition of the Golden Knights, the Royal Canadian Snowbirds, and the F-22 Raptor, leading up to the Blues as the headliner, will make a great show for the fans this year.” It was also announced that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will return as headliners for the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Sunday, May
27, 2023 and Monday, May 28, 2023. This year’s Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach will be the U.S. Navy Blue Angel’s 9th appearance as headliners at the show. Over 367,000 people attended the Bethpage Air
Show at Jones Beach the last time the squadron headlined in 2018. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were also scheduled to perform again in 2020 when the show was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the team participated
in the first Bethpage Virtual Air Show in 2020 by recording special video messages for fans and providing exclusive video footage. Additional 2022 performers will be announced shortly.
