count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few

Students and staff at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School joined together for a holiday sing-along on December 23rd, with various students called up to the microphone to help lead

the rest of the school in singing each holiday tune. Staff members entertained the students during “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” dancing and holding up a poster for each day, while some staff

members surprised the whole school by picking up instruments and playing “Feliz Navidad.” Two “elves” came to visit during the sing-along, giving a little gift to the students.

Musicians Honored Four East Islip High School student-musicians – Kurte Eide, Richard Hughes, Michael Krebs and Evan Mauner – were awarded All-State honors by the New York State School Music Association, and participated in at the NYSSMA Winter Conference at the Eastman Theater in Rochester. At the All-State concert, held on December 4th, Eide (jazz trombone) and Mauner (trumpet) performed with the All-State Instrumental Jazz Ensemble, Hughes (trumpet) played with the All-State Wind Ensemble, and Krebs (bass) sang in the All-State Mixed Chorus. Additionally, 18 students from East Islip were named All-County musicians, and participated in the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education’s All-County Festival concerts, held

on November 18th at Northport High School. Zachary Schurman played alto saxophone with the All-County Band under the direction of Dr. James Tapia. Representing East Islip in the two choral ensembles were Brittney Berke, Kendra Canavan and Sabrina Firneno in the AllCounty Women’s Chorus and Roy Anderson, Amanda Baranek, Sarah Bloom, Krebs, Vincenzo Mediate and Sara Rapuzzi in the All-County Mixed Chorus. Selections included original compositions by Women’s Chorus Director Joan Szymko as well as a mix of contemporary and classical pieces. Eight students were instrumentalists in the AllCounty Orchestra: Eide on trombone, Beth Hillman on oboe, Nicole Humpf on cello, Richie Hughes and Kevin Jacobsen on

trumpet, Samantha Smith on violin, Michael Stevens on horn, and Devin Thelemann on double bass. Under the direction of Joshua Gersen, with conducting assistance from retired East Islip orchestra director Susan W. Rydzeski and current East Islip wind ensemble director Christopher Neske, the orchestra performed “Mars and Jupiter” from Holst’s “The Planets” as well as Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture. “We are so proud of all our All-State and AllCounty students for their hard work and dedication to their musicianship,” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages. “Our students’ accomplishments are a reflection of our teachers’ support and love of teaching, and we cannot thank them enough.”

STEM Snowball Project On the first day of the winter season, students in Jennifer Giordano’s firstgrade class at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School worked on a STEM project with “snowballs.” The task entailed designing, building and attempting to knock down snow forts built from

marshmallows. Students were given specific materials and then had to attempt the challenge. Their goal was to build a structure that would protect its resident from a “snowball” assault by a neighboring group. They observed pictures of snow forts and then worked

together to plan and build their own successful structure. “The children enjoyed the entire project, but their favorite part was getting to throw jumbosized marshmallows at the opposing group’s fort,” said Giordano.

grade, the more advanced fifth-grade orchestra and band, and a combined chorus made up of both fourth- and fifth-grade students. “I am very proud of all the dedicated musicians involved,” said Holly Markee, who directed the performances along with fellow music teacher Holly Markee. “They were able to share their love and joy for

music.” “I am so impressed by the ability of our music students,” said Principal Chad Walerstein. “The students have not been playing for very long, but you would never know it from listening to the music created by this talented group of boys and girls. Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the

holiday celebrations as imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.” During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens. Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 16th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year,

killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. Students to be Honored The LIU Post Art Department will honor three students from local high schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties at the awards ceremony for “Advanced Visions 13: High School Artists of Excellence,” to be held at the University’s Hutchins Gallery on January 25th, 2017. All of the participating students were

selected by their teachers to represent their high schools in the exhibition. The exhibition recognizes the superior work being done by high school students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Portfolio Preparation art programs across Long Island and is on view through January 25th,
