East Islip HS National Honor Society Organizes Most Successful Community Food Drive

East Islip High School’s National Honor Society recently organized its most successful annual food drive. With the participation of the school’s Class of 2025, the World Language Honor Society, Career Development and Occupational Studies students, Student Government, and clubs such as SADD, STARS, Interact Club, Key Club and Leaders Club, this became a true community event. The entire district was
divided into 49 geographic zones. Over 200 students volunteered and were placed in groups to distribute flyers to more than 8,000 households during Veterans Day weekend, making the community aware of the collection date of Nov. 15. That evening, the students went back to their assigned zones to collect any donations that the community left for donation. According to the National Honor Society, this was
its most successful year to date. A total of 152 turkeys and thousands of pounds of food were donated. Many members of the community came and dropped off donations as well. In a true example of EI Pride, local food pantries at the Church of St. Mary, the Church of St. Peter the Apostle and Full Gospel Assembly are now overflowing with the generosity of the East Islip community.

The dawn of a new year marks a great time to turn over a new leaf. Many people begin a new year by making resolutions, and aspiring to eat healthier is annually among the most popular pledges health-conscious individuals make. A recent Statista survey of hundreds of people across the globe found that eating healthier was the second most popular New Year’s resolution of 2023. 50 percent of respondents indicated they set goals to eat healthier in the year ahead. Though each year is different, it’s fair to assume a similarly large percentage of resolution-minded individuals will aspire to eat healthier over the next 12 months. As people begin their journeys to a healthier lifestyle, they can consider these strategies to stay the course with a new diet. • Do not eat too close to bedtime. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found that eating more of a day’s total energy intake in the evening is associated with a higher risk of being overweight or obese. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating more of the day’s energy intake at midday can lower the risk of being overweight or obese. Individuals are more likely to stay the course when they see positive results, so try to eat dinner several hours before bedtime and resist the urge to snack after dinnertime. • Treat yourself, but only periodically. It’s unreasonable and potentially counterproductive to avoid foods seen as treats completely. Cutting out indulgent foods may seem appropriate, but such an approach could make you miserable, and a diet that sparks feelings of misery will prove harder to commit to than one that allows for the occasional indulgence. Moderation is the name of the game, and that should be a rule of thumb for both healthy foods and indulgences. Don’t make indulgences part of your daily routine, even if you eat them in moderation. Rather, save treats for special occasions, and even then only eat them in moderation.

Tips To Stay The Course With A New Diet
• Consider eating less, but more frequently. Data is conflicting regarding eating smaller but more frequent meals. A 2015 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that individuals with six or more eating occasions in 24 hours had a lower mean body mass index than those with four or fewer eating occasions in 24 hours. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating a larger number of small meals throughout the day may be associated with improved diet quality and lower BMI. This approach is commonly referred to as “grazing,” and some research has indicated it has no metabolic advantage over other approaches to eating. So what to make of the mixed results? Dieters can decide for themselves and eat more frequent but smaller, healthier meals to combat hunger pangs that can arise when switching to a new diet. If hunger no longer poses a threat that can derail your diet, then this approach might increase the chances you stay committed to eating right.

Missed Medicare Open Enrollment? You May Have Options By Barry Klitsberg, Nassau County Medicare Counselor, Family and Children’s Association (FCA) Medicare is a federally run health insurance program for people who are 65 years of age or have collected Social Security Disability for 24 months. It is also available for individuals with permanent kidney failure or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Each year Medicare gives participants the opportunity to modify their health care plan during Open Enrollment season, which runs from October 15th through December 7th. When January rolls around, there are always some Medicare beneficiaries who despite their best intentions neglected to switch plans during Open Enrollment or didn’t know about Open Enrollment. This generally means that beneficiaries will have to stay with their current enrollment for 2024. Exceptions to Open Enrollment Limits There are, however, exceptions to the Open Enrollment rule. Medicare beneficiaries who are in a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO) and didn’t change their plan by December 7 may switch Medicare Advantage plans between January 1 and March 31, 2024. If you get your prescription coverage through the plan, you can also switch to a different advantage plan or drop your plan and return to original Medicare. Please note, if you return to the
BARRY KLITSBERG original Medicare, you must also switch to a new drug plan. If you prefer, you can also sign up for a Medicare supplement (Medigap) after your return to original Medicare. If you are enrolled in the New York State Elderly Pharmacy Insurance Coverage Program (EPIC) you are also entitled to change your drug plan (or Medicare Advantage Plan) once a year outside of any enrollment period. This helps people whose doctors have left a plan network during the year and need to find a new plan that will cover their doctors. Another option for low-income seniors who receive extra help from Social Security to lower drug costs is the ability to change your drug plan once every calendar quarter for the first 9 months of each year. Additionally, this program lowers your drug plan premium and your out of pocket costs at the pharmacy. How to Apply for Medicare If you are not yet collecting Social Security, you have to apply for
Medicare during the three month period before your 65th birthday. You may apply for Medicare by calling the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 or on-line at: https://www. ssa.gov/medicare/. If you are already collecting Social Security, you will receive your Medicare card automatically in the mail. Free Help Available Through FCA If you don’t have ready access to a computer or otherwise need assistance, Family and Children’s Association (FCA) can help guide you through the process with free help available by calling the Nassau County Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) at 516-485-3754. One of our counselors will be happy to assist you. HIICAP is a free service that has trained counselors who can provide you with unbiased expertise on what Medicare plan can best meet your individual needs. HIICAP counselors can also help you switch plans, in many cases over the phone. In person appointments are also available. FCA can help. Answers to your Medicare questions are just a phone call away. The Islip Fine and Performing Arts Department held its annual district caroling event on Dec. 21. This year, Islip Middle School students in the seventh and eighth grade choirs were invited to participate to give them the opportunity to work with Islip High School musicians in grades nine
through 12. After a quick warmup at the high school, students loaded the buses for their first stop at Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School. After a quick setup of the piano and microphones, the choir spread out across the aisles of the auditorium and immediately started singing a collection of
holiday tunes reflecting the season and different cultures. Elementary students sang and danced with the older students, some excitedly seeing their older siblings. Teachers also had the opportunity to see the upperclassmen return to their old schools. After Sherwood, the students traveled to Wing

from Suffolk County Legislator Trish Bergin’s office was on hand to present coach Sal Ciampi Jr. and his team with a proclamation commemorating their
achievement. “Congratulations to our varsity football team on such a successful season,” Athletic Director Steve Restivo said. “You guys worked very hard
both on and off the field, and it did not go unnoticed.” “With the amount of talent and kind of kids we have, it’s not surprising that we were able to get there,
but it was a bumpy road at times,” Ciampi said. “It shows the true character of the team and everyone involved in the program that despite setbacks and

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will host its 29th annual Winter Run Series beginning January 2024. The series will begin Sunday, January 14 at Heckscher State Park with an 80’s theme. Additional runs will be held January 21 at Robert Moses State Park with an oldies theme, January 28 at Sunken Meadow State Park with a 90’s theme, and February 4 at Jones Beach State Park, where you can come dressed as your favorite band or artist. All races are 5K in length and will start at 11 a.m.
Registration is open for both full series signups and individual runs. Registration is online only, there will be no in-person registration. The entry fee for full series registration is $50.00 and day-of-race registration is $20.00 per race. Full series registration will close when the maximum amount of 1,100 registrants is reached. Day-of-race registration is available online, beginning the Monday prior to each race, and accepted until 9 a.m. the day of the race. Sponsors supporting the series include: Natural Heritage Trust, Connoisseur Media Long Island, and Runners Edge. For additional
