One out of three households on Long Island do not earn enough to make ends meet, affecting their ability to heat their homes during the bitter winter months. United Way of Long Island’s Project Warmth has helped nearly 200 families, heat their homes since the program opened on December 4th, and with the frigid temperatures currently affecting our area, the

critical need for this program is at its height. As Long Island’s only non-governmental, Islandwide emergency heating fund, Project Warmth is available all winter as a safety net for individuals and families who are facing energy insecurity and are unable to pay their heating bill. The program provides a one-time grant payment directly to oil and utility companies on behalf of the

family, allowing them to use their available funds to pay for essentials like food or medication. “More than 250,000 families on Long Island struggle to afford basics like food, transportation and medical care,” explained Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “During the winter months, the added financial stress of heat

can shatter their budget – especially when they are already living paycheck-topaycheck. Project Warmth eliminates dangerous choices such as leaving the stove on, or using space heaters for these families. Children don’t need to sleep in their winter coats, seniors don’t need to keep their oven burning to stay warm. Parents feel secure knowing that they can now afford their other critical

monthly expenses.” Those in need of assistance can call United Way’s 2-1-1 Long Island helpline by dialing 2-1-1 or 888.774.7633 seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to be connected to a United Way partner agency that will help them apply for a Project Warmth grant. Snowed In Last week’s column was entitled Coming Out of the Cold; this week, Snowed In. Sensing a theme here? January has always been my least favorite month. Apologies to those with birthdays and other assorted milestones which fall within this 31 day period; but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, I find nothing particularly exciting about it. For those who love snow, sure, there’s the potential for a few substantial blizzards to blow our way. But mostly, it’s a month that begins with the daunting process of undecking the halls and ends with faint hopes of a furry critter crawling out of a hole to determine just how much more cold weather we’ve yet to endure until spring beckons. Of course, let’s not forget the seemingly endless parade of holiday bills piling

up in the mailbox as we speak, as the horrifying realization of just how much we spent the previous month begins to set in. Joyful. But, as with anything, January is something we must contend with, for better or worse. And so, we attempt to make the best of it by cooking up big pots of chili, baking cookies and settling in with our fuzzy slippers and pajamas as we once again pick up that book we’ve been meaning to finish since we started it back on the beach sometime in July. There are the movies we never got around to seeing in theaters that have since found their way to our cable channels, maybe a Netﬂix series or two to binge watch, even – dare we say it – some long overdue cleaning out of the closets. {But not the dreaded Christmas Closet. No, January is not a long enough

Elementary Coding The East Islip School District kicked off its annual Hour of Code initiative last month with high school computer programming students visiting classrooms in the district’s four elementary schools – Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point

– to work with second- and fifth-graders, preparing the younger students for a week of coding in the computer labs. The high schoolers shared games they created to demonstrate how computers and coding work. “Our fifth-graders were fortunate to have the

high school students visit to discuss coding,” said JFK Principal Deborah Smith. “The computer science students shared their expertise about the syntax of computer programming, and their presentation was engaging and interactive.”

East Islip High School students from the STARS club, National Honor Society and varsity softball team teamed up with local nonprofit Christmas Magic this holiday season, spreading cheer and acting as Santa’s personal

shoppers for kids in need on Long Island. After shopping for the presents, purchased with donations from Christmas Magic, the students wrapped the gifts with care. “It was a good feeling knowing that these kids

will wake up to a bunch of presents that we helped pick out and wrap,” said softball team captain Katie Burk, whose team’s efforts were for children at a Middle Island shelter.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

Providing Hope Beyond the Food ... this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This organization was founded in 1992 by Sister Elaine when she received a vision from God to “Share the Gospel of Jesus and Feed the Poor.” From there, she humbly took to the streets of Long Island with 10 bologna and cheese sandwiches and did just that. Lighthouse Mission currently reaches 2,000 people per week with the same mission: sharing the Gospel of Jesus and feeding the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is now the president of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After recently meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved. I felt excitement for all they are doing and experienced such a renewed sense of hope. They are truly set apart from many other organizations because they purposefully accomplish much more than just feeding the hungry. Lighthouse Mission operates a Food Outreach as well as a Youth Outreach. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays (in Coram and Ronkonkoma), Wednesdays (in Central Islip), Thursdays (in Shirley and Port Jefferson Station), Fridays (in Riverhead and Centereach) and Saturdays (in Patchogue and Bellport). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, they chose to go mobile and travel to different locales where those in need can line up and receive plenty of nutritional food, gentlyused clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the

event. While I was speaking with Pastor Jim Ryan, he mentioned the inspiration behind being mobile. He explained, “Jesus didn’t make others come to Him to be helped, He went to them…that is why we operate in a mobile manner!” Lighthouse Mission’s Youth Outreach operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students and, on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this service for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. Week after week, many youth on Long Island gather for these events and enjoy a wonderful time together; for many children, the meal they receive at an event will be their only meal of the day. There is an overwhelming amount of people on Long Island who are in need, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that truly cares for those they serve. They operate 100% on donations, receiving no government help. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so! They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are specifically in need of winter coat donations. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. All ages are welcome to volunteer! The Islip High School Hall of Fame’s first group of honorees - Fred Biangardi, Dr. Jeffrey A. Goldstein, Michael Patrovich, John Veryzer and Tom Veryzer – were inducted on December 7th in a special gala presentation in the school auditorium. The Hall of Fame initiative’s goal is

to continue to provide students with a sense of school and community pride while recognizing distinguished members of the school community who have made notable contributions to society. Biangardi coached the varsity baseball team for 37 years, earning a 531-256 record and induction in

the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. He won New York State Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1983, Daily News Suffolk County Coach of the Year in 1970, and League Coach of the Year 11 times. He also taught physical education at Islip for 35 years; introduced Islip’s football program and

coached the varsity football team for 12 years; was a founder of the Islip Booster Club; and had the varsity baseball field named after him. Prior to his career in Islip, the Bay Shore native was All-County captain of Bay Shore High School’s baseball, basketball and football teams; a World War II veteran in the Marine Corps; a college football player at Elon College; and a minor league baseball player for the Yankees, Pirates and St. Louis Browns. Goldstein, a member of Islip’s Class of 1981, is a renowned orthopedic surgeon. He attended medical school at State University of New York Medical Center at Brooklyn, graduating summa cum laude. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and

Legends Inducted into Hall of Fame his fellowship at Johns Hopkins University Medical Institute. He serves as a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at New York University School fo Medicine, director of the NYU Langone Hospital for Joint Diseases Spine Fellowship and incoming president of the International Society for Advancement of Spine Surgery. He has won numerous awards including America’s Top Doctors, Patient’s Choice Award and the America’s Most Compassionate Doctor Award. Patrovich, a member of Islip’s Class of 2001, was a National High School Coaches Association champion wrestler, earning three county titles, three All-State honors and the Dellacave Award as best Suffolk student-athlete, as well as the New York State championship in his senior

year. As a two-time NCAA All-American at Hofstra University, he posted a 106-30 record. He was one of only five wrestlers to win 100 matches in Section XI during high school as well as 100 matches in a Division I college. He also won three Colonial Athletic Association individual championships, 2006 CAA Wrestler of the Year and CAA Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2007, and was named to the CAA Silver Anniversary Team in 2009. Patrovich is currently an assistant wrestling coach at Hofstra and head coach of the Barn Brothers/631 Elite Wrestling Club for children. John Veryzer’s career as coach of Islip’s basketball team lasted for 21 years, during which he earned a 199-19 record, nine league championships and five

A 1939 graduate of Sayville High School, Veryzer played basketball for LaSalle Military Academy and Manhattan College before serving in the Navy during World War II. He served as president of the Suffolk County Basketball Association and was involved in several organizations for basketball officials. Tom Veryzer, John’s son, was a member of Islip’s Class of 1971 and a Major League Baseball player for 12 years. During high school, he earned the Carl Yastrzemski Award for best baseball player in Suffolk County, won AllLeague honors in soccer and played basketball. He was a first-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 1971, going 11th

overall, and was called up to the majors in 1973. Playing shortstop for the Tigers, he was named to the Topps Rookie AllStar team in 1975 before stints with the Cleveland Indians, New York Mets and Chicago Cubs. He retired in 1985 after 996 pro games, finishing with a lifetime batting average of .241. He later worked for the Town of Islip. Patrovich and his family were in attendance at the event, along with the Biangardi, Goldstein and Veryzer families. At the conclusion, the families, guests and school administrators walked down the hallway for the unveiling of the Hall of Fame Wall. “We congratulate our 2017 inductees and their families for this tremendous honor, as they exemplify everything we stand for here at Islip High School and the

Islip School District,” said Principal Michael Mosca. “The inaugural induction class strived for excellence in their time here, and we as a school community are honored that we get to celebrate their accomplishments. They made the decision to do great things with the opportunities they were given, despite any obstacles that may have stood in their way, and they demonstrated the character, work ethic and positive attitude that we hope to see in all of our students. This Hall of Fame will stand as a source of pride for our students, our school and this great community. It is our goal that the students who walk past it each and every day will be inspired to someday have their picture displayed and their legacy remembered.”
