On The Horizon As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be. Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. Positive or negative, response equals readership, and

at least a limited degree of engagement. So let’s head into 2015 with the goal of making #500 just the beginning of the next wave of milestones. Islip High School seniors and physical education role models William Killeen and Juliana Williams have been chosen as the school’s 2014 recipients of the Suffolk Zone Award. The students were selected by Islip’s physical education staff and recognized by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a dinner held at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge on December 3rd. The Suffolk Zone Award is presented annually to the top male and female physical education students in that year’s graduating class, those who best contribute to the overall positive tone of their physical education classes as well as the

Set To Headline Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are very pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 12th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 23rd, 2015 and Sunday, May 24th, 2015. This will be the legendary demonstration squadron’s fourth appearance at the show. The announcement was also made that the Canadian Forces CF-18 Demonstration Team will appear at this year’s show as well as the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team. Civilian performers will include the Breitling Jet Team, Sean D. Tucker – Team Oracle, Lt. Col. John Klatt – Air National Guard, the John Klatt Airshows – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic Team, GEICO

Skytypers, Miss GEICO Speedboat, American Airpower Warbirds, and David Windmiller. “We are especially thrilled to welcome back the United States Air Force Thunderbirds to Long Island for their fourth headlining appearance at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach,” said George Gorman, Deputy Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The United States Air Force Thunderbirds last headlined the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach in 2009 and were scheduled to appear again in 2013, but were forced to cancel due to government sequester budget cuts. “We welcome the team back to Long Island with great enthusiasm,” continued Gorman. “Over 360,000 spectators chose the Bethpage Air Show as their Memorial Day holiday weekend destination in 2009, when

the Thunderbirds last visited. We are confident that their return to Long Island in 2015 will draw in a sizeable crowd as well,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Bethpage. “Memorial Day weekend is an important time to honor the men and women of our country’s military, which is exactly what the Thunderbirds demonstration squadron is all about – to honor and share the story of our nation’s military who have served and currently serve at locations around the world,” Armyn continued. The Thunderbirds were formed in 1953, and since have been charged with demonstrating the professionalism of Airmen and the capabilities of modern airpower. The East Islip Middle School Holiday Brass Ensemble has been busy spreading holiday cheer, starting on December 5th when they kicked off the season with a performance at the East Islip Fire Department’s tree lighting ceremony. Despite inclement weather, the young student-musicians – Joseph Bucci, Max Calarco, Justin Lamando, John Sidorski, James Smalley and James Sullivan

on trumpet; Stephen Bernhardt, Aiden Furay, Steven Gieseler, Thomas Gonzalez and, Zachary MacMorris on trombone; AJ Rumfola and Thomas Wienclaw on baritone saxophone; and Michael Fiorello and Gabriel Poroslay on tuba – played holiday favorites such as Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer, Deck The Halls, Joy To The World, Jingle Bells and Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree to an appreciative audience.

The Holiday Brass subsequently performed in the ballroom of the Islip Art Museum’s Brookwood Hall for the annual Orphan Tree Lighting. “I had such great fun working with these wonderful young men, and am extremely proud of their commitment to music and giving back to their community,” said ensemble director Concetta Stevens.

Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

cards to the children in Africa is called the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, known as (FOCOS). FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine. I enjoyed this volunteer effort. Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need. I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our food pantry is a designated pick-up

organization for Island Harvest and Long Island Cares. I go to pick up the food twice a week from these organizations. Once again this year, in addition to food, we also gave toys out to those families who are less fortunate. Our church is also a designated distribution organization for Toys-for-Tots. We utilize this resource every year at Christmas to bring joy to children in need throughout our community. Reaching out and giving back throughout the year is always important. However, the Christmas season should always be a time to be even more kind and giving to those less fortunate than us.

Leaders Honored East Islip High School’s physical education staff chose seniors Kevin Capone and Valerie Pelling as the winners of this year’s Suffolk Zone Awards. The pair were honored by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a December 3rd dinner at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge. The Suffolk Zone Award is presented each year to

the top male and female physical education students in that year’s graduating class. Those selected have contributed highly to the overall positive tone of their physical education classes as well as the school. Among the criteria for the award are earning an A average or above 90 in high school physical education classes, achieving an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of junior year, demonstrating

outstanding character and leadership qualities, and being a role model for good health and physical fitness. “It’s nice to be have been selected by the staff,” said Capone, who plays lacrosse and golf. “It’s an honor,” added Pelling, who participates in lacrosse, soccer, field hockey and winter track. “I was very happy that I was able to fulfill the LEADERS HONORED - East Islip High School seniors Kevin Capone and Valerie requirements.” Pelling were selected as winners of the 2014 Suffolk Zone Award for physical education leadership. Earning His Eagle Badge

John Peter D’Ambrosio successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on September 4th, 2014, officially making him the 56th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. John’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, January 31st, 2015, starting at 12 noon at Trinity Lutheran Church, 111 Nassau Avenue in Islip. John D’Ambrosio was a member of Troop 151, under the direction of Scoutmasters Bob Sgroi and John’s Father, Peter D’Ambrosio and currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, with Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” John has served both troops as a

Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Den Chief for a Cub Scout Pack, Troop Guide and Senior Patrol Leader. John is also a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. He has also earned the BSA World Conservation Award. He has also successfully completed the BSA National Youth Leadership Training. John has had many unique Scouting experiences, including multiple Suffolk County Council and Sagtikos District Camporees, weekend campouts, and the 2013 National Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit Reserve in West Virginia. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community.John has actually earned a total of 35 merit badges. The Service Project that John conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the wheelchair accessible walkway and patio through a butterfly garden at the South Shore Nature Center in East Islip. As John reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “I feel that my life has been molded by my many life experiences – especially Scouting. I am undecided about my future, but will include some type of leadership role. My career choices are leading towards political science, homeland security, public relations, or the armed forces. These careers all include a great deal of leadership ability as well as public speaking. I would like to continue my

Scouting career as a leader. My path through life will always include volunteerism and continuing to be a positive role model for others.” John is a senior at Islip High School, where he has been involved with sports, music, theater, and clubs. After his high school graduation this upcoming spring, John plans to go to Farmingdale College next fall. John has been a member of the Cross Country, Winter Track, and Spring Track High School teams since the 9th grade. In his senior year, John was named Captain of the Cross Country team. He has also been a member of student government since 6th grade and in the Board Game and Drama Clubs, and a member of the Chorus since 4th grade and in the Drama Club. He has also served on the Stage Crew in the 11th grade and ongoing with the class float committee. He has also been on Islip Little League Teams, Suffolk Flag Football League, the Shaolin Self Defense Centers where he earned the rank of Brown Belt Second Degree and has run in several 5K races, including the Wounded Warrior Run. Community service has been important to John as he has worked at the St. Mark’s Church thrift shop, and Church spaghetti dinners and pancake fundraisers. John has also been involved with beach cleanup projects and the Islip Christmas Parades. He has also worked on many Eagle Service Projects within Troops 151 and 205. John is also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Islip, where he was baptized and received his Holy Communion and Confirmation. John is the son of Christine and Peter D’Ambrosio of Islip, and brother to Eric D’Ambrosio.
