in Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funds to train dislocated workers in special populations (for example, exoffenders, limited English proficiency, individuals with disabilities, recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and veterans) who require classroom-based occupational skills training in order to be qualified to be hired for full time employment in the region. “These grants enable the Opportunity Resource Center to provide additional services to Town residents and become an even more valuable resource for all those who can benefit from the center’s programs,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. “We value the partnership with St. Joseph’s College and thank them for their active role in helping to obtain this grant.” “We are always looking for new ways to broaden the way the Opportunity Resource Center addresses the need for services that will help residents improve their lives, whether by linking them to assistance programs or by preparing them for jobs that are in demand,” Councilwoman Tracey Edwards said. “These training programs have the potential to be life-changing, and the Town is pleased to be able to serve our residents this way.” In addition to basic courses preparing people for entry into the workforce, including basic workforce skills, the training programs will offer two specialized sequences in the hospitality industry and in welding and soldering. The hospitality sequence will provide students with customer service training, basic server skills, interpersonal relations, problem solving and listening skills, as well as basic hospitality finance and computer skills that align with the industry.

The Huntington Opportunity Resource Center will offer some new programs as 2016 begins, helping to provide training in the hospitality industry to disadvantaged and displaced workers and offering a site where the aged, blind and disabled can sign up for public insurance/assistance programs. The employment training is being offered as a result of two state grants, each for $50,000, the Town obtained through St. Joseph’s College, which has partnered with the Opportunity Resource Center on a number of programs and which will conduct the training in conjunction with Suffolk County Community College. The first grant provides $50,000 in Workforce Investment Act funds for occupational skills training of dislocated workers to prepare them for full-time jobs (35 hours or more per week) needed by a business group or businesses in the region. A “dislocated worker” is defined as an individual who: either who has been terminated or laid off, or who has received notice of termination or layoff, and is unlikely to return to a previous industry or occupation; has been terminated or laid off, or has received notice of termination or layoff, as a result of any permanent closure of, or substantial layoff at, a plant, facility or enterprise; was self-employed, but is unemployed as a result of general economic conditions or because of natural disasters; is a displaced homemaker - an individual who has been dependent on the income of another family member, but is no longer supported by that income; or is unemployed or underemployed and is experiencing difficulty in obtaining or upgrading employment. The second grant provides another $50,000

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION - On December 22nd, Supervisor Ed Romaine celebrated the holidays with Reverend Jim Ryan at the Lighthouse Mission’s annual toy drive. The event was held at the Kreamer Street Elementary School in Bellport. Veteran Pins Awarded Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern participated in a special ceremony to award Veterans Pins to First Responders who have also served our great nation in the military. Special pins were created as part of a program to recognize those who serve our community both locally, as firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians and in the armed forces. Legislator Stern awarded pins to Christopher Schiavo of the Deer Park Fire Department (DPFD) and to Second Assistant Chief Alan Berkowitz of the

Dix Hills Fire Department (DHFD). Christopher Schiavo is a 26 year member of the DPFD, served as Chief from 2000-2008 and currently serves as a Fire Commissioner. A Lieutenant Colonel in his 31st year of service in the United States Air Force, he serves as Liaison Director for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He is a pilot in the Aviation Unit of the Suffolk County Police Department, is president of the Suffolk Police Veterans Association and is a member of the Sons of Italy and the

Knights of Columbus. Alan Berkowitz is an Advanced EMT-CC and serves as Second Assistant Chief of the DHFD, where he has been a member for 15 years. He was deployed at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks on our nation on September 11th, 2001 and was awarded Town Chief of the Year in 2014. He is a Major in the Air Force Reserves Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corp. He led a unit that aided in the prosecution of Iraqi terrorists and currently serves as an Administrative Law Judge.

“See the glass half full, and find the good in everyone…” So wrote one of my former teachers in the pages of my high school yearbook, a sentiment that seems to resonate more with each passing year. Too often do we become consumed by the monotony of our daily routines, allowing the negativity which surrounds us to engulf what always begins as the best of intentions. With this New Year, I hope to maintain a certain degree of optimism in the face of what can only be classified as Life. As Frank Sinatra sang, “You’re ridin’ high in April, shot down in May; but I know I’m gonna change that tune when I’m back on top, back on top in June…” And so it

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

Delivering Cheer items for local children whose families were identified as being in need through the parish program. They distributed these gifts, along with stocking stuffers, Christmas decorations, turkeys and hams. This eighth consecutive toy drive was a huge success, surpassing the impact of last year’s toy collection. With CHS’s Information Technology Field Services Department spearheading the effort,

system staff members from various departments worked together to collect newly purchased merchandise and donate more than $2,000 for additional purchases. Many gave of their time to sort and deliver these gifts. A total of more than 1,300 children received toys in this partnership with community members and the Wyandanch church.

They conducted a variety of tests to determine pH, oxygen levels and overall health of the specimens they collected. As they conducted their analysis, the young scientists received a visit from Dr. Mohammed Rana, a biology professor at St. Joseph’s College with an expert background in environmental science. Dr. Rana brought a group of his students who are working on a similar study in Patchogue. The college students and Doshi STEM students compared notes, shared their research and discussed what they had learned. Thus far, the Doshi STEM scientists have determined that the Glen Cove site is affected by heavy metals in runoff from a local factory. A nearby stream is carrying the runoff away from the factory and depositing the pollutants in the affected ecosystem. The students hope to learn more as the study unfolds, including ways to resolve the pollution problem and return the site to health once more.

“Our students are developing an intricate understanding of the effect humans have on the environment,” Living Environment Teacher Paulette D’Allessio said of the Doshi science students and their work. “They are learning about the impact we have on our local ecosystems and how it effects us, then expanding upon that knowledge to work toward possible solutions. All the while, they are getting invaluable hands-on lessons in science, as well as an opportunity to give back to their community.” “While textbooks are an essential teaching tool, there is no greater lesson for our students than going out into the field and directly interacting with what they are studying,” said Doshi STEM Institute Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “When our students see firsthand that there are real world implications to their research with real world applications, it creates a genuine enthusiasm for the curriculum.”

Collaborating with the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch, the CHS employees worked tirelessly, collecting new toys and monetary contributions to purchase

The students of the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute are looking into some fairly serious issues affecting Long Island’s ecology. In their ongoing Human Impact Study, these science scholars are conducting research both in the field and in the lab to determine the short and long term effects of pollution in local ecosystems. The team of Nassau BOCES environmentalists recently took a trip to a “superfund” site in Glen Cove. A superfund site is an ecological site that his been contaminated by pollutants to the point that its ecosystem is dying. The students collected a full spectrum of samples including microorganisms, plant and animal life. For comparison, they did the same at a “pristine” site - one that has been untouched by pollutants in Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve. With their fieldwork complete, the Doshi STEM research team took the samples back to their school lab for analysis.

Mercy Gives Back Each year at Christmas time, employees of Mercy Medical Center “adopt” underprivileged families and donate new clothes, toys and gift cards that are distributed the week of Christmas. This year, 19 families were presented with

Christmas cheer, including two that welcomed newborns in December - one set of twin boys and a baby girl. Also, the Oceanside Knights of Columbus collaborated with the hospital with their charitable initiative “Coats for Kids,” donating two
