East Islip High School senior Chiara Mosca recently received a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Research Exam, which was taken in May 2021. AP Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. Mosca not only received the top score of 5, but was also one of only 375 students – amounting to just 1.56% of 2021 AP Research Exam takers – from around the world to earn every point possible on this challenging collegelevel examination. “We applaud Chiara’s mastery of the content and skills of this AP course and wish her many future successes,” AP Program head Trevor Packer said. “I am extremely proud of Chiara, but not surprised at all,” said Sheryl Ingoglia, Mosca’s AP Research teacher last year. “Right off the

Six Seniors From East Islip Sign For College Lacrosse

Six seniors from East Islip High School – Ryan Bauco, Stephen DeAmicis, Gavin Herzog, Cole Juengerkes, Jack Kern and Nicholas Perone – signed national letters of intent on Dec. 8 to continue their lacrosse careers in college next fall. Bauco will attend Stevenson University, majoring in business finance. A four-year varsity starter on attack, he earned Scholar-Athlete designation all four years. In the 2021 season, Bauco led the team in goals and received the Coaches Award. A three-sport varsity athlete, Bauco is a member of East Islip’s basketball and football teams, winning the Suffolk County championship this year as a member of

the latter, and also played travel lacrosse for East Coast Elite. In academics, Bauco was named an AP Scholar, earned high honor roll designation and is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society. DeAmicis will attend Adelphi University, majoring in physical education and health. The defenseman earned honor roll designation every quarter. Herzog will also attend Adelphi, majoring in business finance. The midfielder earned AllCounty honors in his junior year. Juengerkes will attend Felician University, majoring in business law. The defenseman, a member of East Islip lacrosse for over seven years, also played for the Long Island

Rush Lacrosse club team. Kern will attend Pace University, majoring in business finance. The goalie, a four-year varsity player, was named Suffolk County Class B Division 2 Most Valuable Player and awarded Player of the Game in a playoff win. He boasts a 71% save percentage and made 166 saves in his junior year. In academics, he earned honor roll designation. Perone will attend Pace University, joining the school’s physician’s assistant program. The defenseman earned AllDivision honors in his junior year. In academics, Perone was named an AP Scholar and earned honor roll distinction every quarter.

Softball Team Brings More ‘Christmas Magic’ To Kids

East Islip High School’s varsity softball team participated in the annual Christmas Magic service project on Dec. 12. All of the returning players, including assistant coach Katie Wallace, shopped at Target in Bay Shore for elementary-age children in the Amityville School District. While I’m shopping, I think about how happy these children will be when they wake up Christmas morning and open these presents.” “It shows me how fortunate I am,” Madison Sturtz said. “The experience that comes with giving back to these kids is so rewarding, especially around this time of year.”

East Islip’s Girls Soccer Team Recognized With Awards

East Islip High School’s girls soccer team and many of its members were recently recognized for their outstanding season by the state, the county and the Suffolk County Girls Soccer Coach Association, earning numerous awards for the 2021 season.

Kate Alexander was named Division II Class A,B,C Player of the Year, and Nikki Brunner was named Division II Class A,B,C Defensive Player of the Year. Alexander and Brunner both also earned All-State and All-County status.

Jenna Borelli was named Suffolk County Championship Game MVP and Ben Diallo was named Suffolk County Division II Coach of the Year. Borelli, Krista Deutsch, Mikayla Horton, Dylann Trahey and Julianna Violi earned All-Division status.

East Islip Quarterback Derek Burrell Wins Hansen Award

East Islip High School senior Derek Burrell has been named as the 62nd recipient of Newsday’s Hansen Award, recognizing him as the outstanding high school football player in Suffolk County for 2021. He was presented with this prestigious award – the first ever for an East Islip player –at the Suffolk County Football Coaches Association banquet, held

on Dec. 6 at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge. After being moved to the quarterback position in August by East Islip coach Sal Ciampi, Burrell began a spectacular season to remember, finishing with 33 total touchdowns and 2,952 all-purpose yards. On defense, Burrell was equally strong, tallying 45 tackles and returning two of his four interceptions
