For Early Intervention, referrals are made to the Suffolk County Department of Health. For Preschool services, refer to your local school district Committee on Preschool Special Education. Parents will, however, be expected to pay for the costs of any childcare. Based on an evaluation, the Municipality for Early Intervention and your District CPSE for preschool will determine the type of service, frequency, duration, location and provider of services. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. So was the year 2016, at times. And so we bid farewell, and look ahead to 2017 with the same mix of enthusiasm and anxiety, optimism and apprehension. All years are a product of their individual months, weeks, days, hours even. Highs and lows become woven into the fabric of our being and, somehow, intertwine into yet another chapter of life. As much as the collective opinion seems to hold that this past year was one of the
most trying on record, for many reasons, I’m sure it held just as much hope and promise for others. It’s all a matter of perspective. Ultimately, each moment needs to be taken on its own, able to stand up by itself and not be compared and contrasted to the big picture. Too much focus on the future, and on things beyond our control, leads to missing those opportunities right in front of us. This is not to say that we should forgo any life plans we may have; but there is a balance. As we analyze and overthink, life marches on around us.

And so the goal, this year, should be to live, to experience, to embrace those moments swirling around us. And to savor them. Good, bad or indifferent, everything happens for a reason. We may not understand the dynamics of why, or what it may lead to down the road; but eventually, the path becomes clearer. The important thing is not to stray too far off the road in the meantime. The idealism in all of us suggests that the best is yet to come. Here’s hoping that 2017 is exactly that for everyone.

calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York. Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes. “Our residents have shared such rich stories
through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.” The 2017 “Art from the Heart” calendar can be purchased for $12 by visiting www.thefqc. org and www.nyshfa.org.
The websites also include images from the “Art from the Heart” calendar. Proceeds from the calendar benefit the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. a non-profit, grantsupported organization that focuses on improving the quality of care and quality of life in New York State nursing homes.

Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2017 calendar, “Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Residents of more than 335 NYSHFA/ NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities around the state were invited to submit artwork. Proceeds from the

Hour of Code Students from all across the Islip School District participated in the Hour of Code during early December’s Computer Science Education Week. Younger students wrote programs to make Disney characters dance, while others developed web pages or created complex computer and gaming scenarios. As part of the Hour of Code, the district gave a Kindle Fire tablet to Commack Road Elementary School student

McBride and his class did coding with their teacher, Joan Heuer. “I had fun using Minecraft to destroy blocks,” said McBride, but according to Heuer, she knew that all the while he was learning sequencing, problem solving and programming. “Computers an important part of every industry, and 21st Century
graduates need to be skilled in technology regardless of their career goals,” said Vincent Green, Islip’s instructional technology liaison and director of fine and performing arts. “Corporations like Google aren’t just hiring programmers – they’re hiring creative people with a strong technology background. We want to position our students to be technology leaders in all industries.”
Gift Collection Islip High School’s World Language Honor Society shared in the spirit of the holiday season by collecting new unwrapped toys and gifts for children in need living in Suffolk County.

Honoring Teamwork East Islip High School’s girls varsity soccer team and Coach Julie Susskind were recently honored for their teamwork by the district at a recent board of education meeting, with senior midfielder Rachel Florenz specifically recognized for being named Newsday Athlete of
the Week. “They started their journey in August and worked very hard to achieve their goals,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. “They meshed as a team, setting a fine example for our upcoming freshmen, sophomores and JV players. Their record was 9-3-2,
which is phenomenal. As underdogs, they lost 1-0 to Deer Park in the second round of playoffs. They left everything on the field. It was one of the most exciting games I’ve seen while I’ve been here at East Islip.”
Creating cheer with their voices and instruments, students from several East Islip schools performed for the community at local tree lighting ceremonies in early December. The East Islip Middle School Tri-M Honor Society Holiday Ensemble and the John F. Kennedy Elementary School Chorus were on hand for the East Islip Fire Department’s tree lighting on December 3rd, while the Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School Chorus sang at the East Islip Community Chamber tree lighting on December 6th. At the fire department event, firemen and the Ladies Auxiliary served the
children hot chocolate, hot dogs and cookies, and the hundreds of attendees erupted in thunderous applause when JFK fifthgrader Max Berlin hit the switch and the Christmas tree appeared. “There is always something magical about the moment the lights go on,” said JFK Principal Deborah Smith. “Holiday spirit filled the air and the students’ musical talents entertained everyone.” The middle school’s ensemble – including musicians Kelcie Alba, Jacob Arens, Michael Baldino, Robert Finn, Joseph Graziano, Christian Guiliano, Brandan Hughes, Frank Naccarato, Vincent
Papillo, Joy Petersen, Jack Seybert, Nicholas Spameni, Elizabeth Stewart and Maya Zollner – played familiar tunes such as “Deck the Halls,” “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “O Christmas Tree” and “Jingle Bells”, concluding with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” as Santa and friends were brought in on a fire truck. “This was such a fun and special evening,” said ensemble director Concetta Stevens. “This was the largest turnout of community members to ever attend the tree lighting ceremony.”

Velocity Vortex
Creativity and science came together at last weekend’s FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmage at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries. Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. Last weekend’s scrimmage was the first
event in the 2016-2017 FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island. Qualifying Tournaments will be held in Lynbrook on Sunday, January 8th, 2017; Center Moriches on Sunday, January 15th, 2017; and Syosset on Saturday, January 28th, 2017. The Long Island Championship will be held in Smithtown on Saturday, February 11th, 2017. The FIRST Tech Challenge program is presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI). The other three FIRST programs are already very active on Long Island and engage students from age six through 18 in the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League and FIRST LEGO League Jr. SBPLI is proud to offer this
fourth and final program in the FIRST progression of programs. “LuHi was the perfect site to host the inaugural event of the season,” says FIRST Long Island representative, Janet Anderson. “They were a wonderful partner and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them to benefit the students of Long Island.” “The LuHi community is still buzzing about the FIRST Tech Challenge event,” says Ed Parry, Director of Summer Programs. “They loved the atmosphere and the people involved. has become an important means of assisting military families that face a variety of issues. BDG challenged its employees to donate dollars and then applied a significant multiple to match those funds in making the contribution.

Robotics Invitational Now in its fifth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event, which this year was held on Saturday, November 19 at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is a way for teams to face off using the previous season’s robots one final time before launching into the next build season. This year’s event featured 24 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2016 Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, held in March, the challenge for which was dubbed was FIRST StrongHold™. This past season, and at the Invitational, FIRST robots battled on a 27-by-54-foot playing field on which participants earned points
by accomplishing set tasks. Some of the goals included traversing obstacles, throwing “boulders” into various openings of the castle and climbing the tower – which resulted in extra points. The winning trio/alliance comprised of PatchogueMedford High School Team #329 “Mohawks,” West Islip High School Team #871 “Robotechs” and finally Team #2875 “CyberHawks” of Cold Spring Harbor. The finalists were PlainviewOld Bethpage High School Team #353 “POBots,” Plainedge High School Team #527 “Red Dragons” and finally Wheatley School Team #2872 “CyberCats.” The Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education to students, schools, communities and local businesses. As testing results and college entrances are now considered a measure
of a school’s success, the implementation of STEM-focused curricula has become increasingly important to developing the careers of students, who can relate the skills learned from FIRST robotics to positions in the medical, business and other professional industries. FIRST is leading the way for diversification in STEM fields. The robotics competition, according to SBPLI FIRST Robotics Competition CoDirector Debra Winter, is a “launching pad for future professional mathematicians and engineers. He also performed the jazz standard “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck. “What more fitting way to celebrate Long Island’s aspiring pianists then having a piano competition,” said Grace Heaphy, director of the Grace Music School. “It gives them a chance to perform at one of the greatest music venues
in the world.” The competition will be held in April of 2017 at the worldfamous Steinway and Sons piano showroom in New York City. The winner will perform at Carnegie Hall in June. “We could not be more proud of these two flourishing musicians,” said LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson. “They are an excellent representation of the gifted youngsters that constitute our school. They are the embodiment of Long Island’s up-andcoming artistic talent.”

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wants to remind residents that Yellow Dot medical information kits for vehicles and homes are available through his Office and may be obtained by calling the Sheriff’s Office’s Community Relations Unit at 631.852.3763. The kits are made available through the NYS Sheriff’s Association, in collaboration with local Sheriff’s Offices, and are distributed to the public free of charge. The Yellow Dot kit
contains a medical information card and a Yellow Dot program decal. Participants complete the card, attach a recent photo, place it in the glove compartment of their vehicle, and place the Yellow Dot decal on the rear driver’s side window. First responders arriving at the scene of an emergency will be alerted by the Yellow Dot decal to look for the medical information card in the glove compartment. It may also be used in a participant’s residence to
alert first responders when they enter someone’s home. The Sheriff’s Office has distributed than 10,000 Yellow Dot to County residents since the programs’ inception in 2013. affordable rental housing, her case managers and social workers helped with life skills, job training, health care, and linked her to a host of other community supports that contribute to stability and independence. Funding is provided under New York State’s Homeless Housing & Assistance Program, which allows CHI to acquire and rehabilitate properties to serve homeless families and individuals. “Six years ago, I couldn’t imagine being where I am today. I can never repay CHI for the help they gave me and my family,” said Ms. Nielsen. When Ms. Nielsen got to CHI, she was homeless, nine months sober, and traveling almost daily by bus to Stony Brook Hospital to care for her premature baby girl, who remained in the NICU for three months. She also has a son who was one year old, at the time, and daughter, then 10. From emergency housing in Middle Island, CHI accepted her into the agency’s transitional housing in a home in East Patchogue. Due to the lack of permanent housing, CHI extended her lease at that home for almost two years, enabling Ms. Nielsen to care for her children and get back on her feet. This month Ms. Nielsen and her family moved into a new home, independent of CHI. Due to the help she received at CHI, Ms. Nielsen was able to become
the kind of parent she has always wanted to be. Her older daughter was being bullied at school. She was able to get her the help she needed, sending her to a therapist and addressing it with the school. That same daughter will graduate early from high school this June and has already been accepted to Jamestown College in the fall. Her two younger children are enrolled in their new schools and doing well. Her younger daughter, Rayna, has special needs and receives occupational and physical therapy, and schooling that meets her needs. Now that both younger children are a little older and enrolled in school fulltime, Ms. Nielsen is ready to start a full-time job. She is excited about the road ahead. “From my CHI case managers I learned to set small goals and work my way toward them and that’s how I’ve accomplished a lot of things in the past six years,” said Ms. Nielsen. “That’s what I’ve taught my children to do too. We stick together and support one another. This growth and change starts in the home.” “I feel so grateful for my time at the CHI house in East Patchogue. I had never heard of a program like this that really turned my life around. I hope that house brings as many memories to the next family as it did for mine.”

Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. And a formerly homeless family of four will be spending their first holiday season in their new home in Mattituck, thanks to their efforts and assistance from the nonprofit Community Housing Innovations (CHI). Regina Nielsen and her three children moved in to their new home on December 1st, five and a half years after she and her family ended up in a CHI emergency shelter. After six months in emergency housing, Ms. Nielsen was accepted into CHI’s supportive housing program, which provided her with the tools to gain independence. Many adults resolve to expand their professional horizons by returning to school even after they have established themselves in their professions. Some may aspire to develop skills specific to a particular job, while others may want to make it easier to transition to a new career.
