East Islip High School’s division champion field hockey squad earned numerous deserved accolades at the Suffolk County Field Hockey Coaches Association’s annual awards dinner. The December 4th ceremony was held at Villa Lombardi’s

in Holbrook. Seniors Lindsay Guzzetta and Kendall Mittleman earned All-County status; seniors MaryKate Carroll and Sarah DiPrima and juniors Allison Chiarelli and Alyssa Levy earned All-County Honorable Mention; Carroll and

Guzzetta both won AllTournament recognition; and Melissa Sconone took home the Unsung Hero award. “This is a great team, better every day on and off the field,” said coach Christopher Veit.

Playing Soccer For Potsdam signed a national letter of intent on December 14th to play soccer for SUNY Potsdam. He was congratulated by his proud coaches, parents and Redmen Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. The three-year varsity left back and team captain won the Cary Award for Leadership; he also was East Islip High School named All-Division as a senior Justin Lamando member of the school’s

tennis team. On the academic side, he was named to the high honor roll and is a member of East Islip’s National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society. He plans to major in business administration and management.

ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF TREES - Dozens of community groups and service organizations turned out for the 5th Annual Festival of Trees at Brookwood Hall Thursday. Thirty five Christmas trees were decorated on the lawn as part of the annual event presented by the Brookwood Hall Restoration Committee and the Islip Arts Council. A Little Bit Goes A Long Way There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.” I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. It simply isn’t true. Another old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” is one of the most brilliant lines ever spoken (it originated from an old Chinese proverb, which was translated into English). I was just speaking with a coworker about the holidays. As we were discussing the copious amounts of food many of us tend to consume during the holiday season and how gym memberships are often initiated in January and not followed through with, I jokingly told her about my “Lazy Girl Workout.”

I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right? Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game. Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then

why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps. Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something. To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the ﬁle cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

East Islip High School senior and star bowler Julianna Spina signed a national letter of intent on December 13th, committing to Arkansas State University. Girls varsity bowling coach

Harold Cooley and Athletic Director Stephen Restivo were in attendance to congratulate Spina, along with her family. While bowling for the Red Wolves, Spina plans to major in biology and chemistry. A member of East Islip’s National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society, she will graduate in the top 10 percent of her class. As an athlete, she earned All-State, All-County and All-League status, was a key member of the state champion team, and was the 2017-2018 Suffolk County Match Play winner

Northport-East Northport School District’s law and civic education program, featured guest speakers Cathy Kuhlmeir Frey and Mary Beth Tinker, both hailed as “icons of freedom.” Kuhlmeier Frey was the lead litigant in “Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier,” the Supreme Court’s landmark

decision on student free press rights in a school setting, while Tinker was a lead litigant in another landmark Supreme Court case, “Tinker v. Des Moines,” which set the authoritative precedent on the free speech rights of students under the 1st Amendment.

Receiver of Taxes Announces Extended Holiday Hours Islip Town Receiver of Taxes, Alexis Weik, has announced that her office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip, is accepting payment of 2018/2019 taxes. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the following exceptions: On December 31st the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and we will be closed on

December 24th, December 25th and January 1st. “One evening in January has been set aside for those residents who are unable to pay in person during our regular 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. business hours”, said Mrs. Weik. “On Thursday, January 10th, the office will remain open until 7:00 p.m.” Of course, residents can save time by visiting the Town of Islip website

(www.islipny.gov) and pay their taxes online or by mailing their tax payments. However, to avoid penalty, all payments must be postmarked BY THE POST OFFICE no later than January 10, 2019. New Year, New Me Mindset.

It’s officially 2019! If you’re reading this right now, think about all you have to be grateful for: eyes to see, education to read, knowledge to interpret, the gift of free time to do what you please (which happens to be reading this article, thank you!) and the blessing of seeing another year begin.

giving your recyclables to a homeless individual so they can get the money for them instead of you getting the money for yourself or simply cooking a meal for a needy friend every so often. Think of how much more we can do for those around us and even those around the world!

It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.

One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.

My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us.

I do believe we should be mindful of our habits, our lifestyles and ourselves, always bettering ourselves to make the world a better place. However, I believe we should get in a habit of thinking more of others and less of ourselves. This New Year, instead of thinking of how much weight you want to lose, how many countries you want to travel to, what job promotion you want to achieve or what you want others to think of you, try changing your mindset to think of how you can help others. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution can be to volunteer once a week at a local non-profit, donate all your unwanted clothes instead of throwing them in the garbage,

My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water. I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose.

After plenty of research, the organization I started my fundraiser through is The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation.

Students in Lauren Ferlin’s and Lisa Carpenito’s Honors Research classes at East Islip High School recently participated in the “A Day in the Life of a River” program, traveling to Bayard Cutting Arboretum to study the health of the Connetquot River ecosystem.

During the program, which is coordinated by Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Central Pine Barrens Commission, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Suffolk County Water Authority, students gathered data by collecting

and identifying biological samples, performing chemical analyses of water samples, and collecting physical data and performing analyses of the river bottom. When uploaded to the program database, the data will provide a snapshot of a typical day in the life of the Connetquot River. East Islip High School seniors Christopher Palmer and Melissa Sconone were named recipients of the 2017-2018 Suffolk Zone awards. Both students were honored at the annual Suffolk Zone Awards dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s on November 28th.

The awards are presented to the top male and female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school’s graduating class, by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The criteria for selection include outstanding character and leadership qualities, strong contributions to the overall positive tone of physical education and health classes as well as their school, and an A average or above 90 in physical education classes and an overall grade point average of 3.0.
