With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,

Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

As churchgoers we focus on three things: God, Family, Self. All three of these are important and all three of these are in order of which comes first. We talk at length in the church about how to properly love ourselves and take care of ourselves so that we do not burn out and fail at the first two! Preparing for College The Farmingdale School District recently invited professors from Adelphi University, The Hartford School and Farmingdale College to help Farmingdale High School student artists prepare their college portfolios. This event is part of a Farmingdale School District initiative to guide students in making informed decisions about

their futures. During the visit, students presented college-level pieces they have worked on throughout their high school careers to the professors, who then gave students valuable feedback on their work. Students learned what kinds of work they should include in their portfolio and the importance of including a variety of work.

The professors also spoke to students about the difference between art school and a university or college with an art department. They also discussed the difference between a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and how to prepare for a career in the visual arts.
